Boeing also won the Air Force’s separate F-47 development contract in March 2025, but those two awards do not establish that Boeing will make sixth-generation fighters for every U.S. service branch.
What did Boeing win from the Navy?
Boeing announced that the Navy awarded it a multibillion-dollar contract to produce F/A-XX, a developmental aircraft the company describes as the Navy’s first sixth-generation platform. Boeing says the aircraft is intended to replace the F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet. Its technical and program details remain classified under U.S. national security and export laws, according to Boeing’s September 29, 2026 announcement.

Axios reported that the full-scale-development contract is worth more than $20 billion and includes multiple aircraft for ground and weapons-integration testing; it also reported that Boeing bested Northrop Grumman. This is a reported development-contract value, not a publicly itemized production-unit cost. Boeing’s announcement itself gives no dollar figure beyond calling the award multibillion-dollar.
Does Boeing now make all U.S. sixth-generation fighters?
No. The evidence establishes Boeing awards for two distinct programs serving the Navy and Air Force. It does not establish that Boeing has won a sixth-generation fighter program for every U.S. service branch. The “all branches” claim therefore goes beyond what the announced contracts show.

The Air Force award was announced in March 2025: the Department of the Air Force selected Boeing for the Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract for its Next Generation Air Dominance platform, designated F-47. The Air Combat Command announcement describes that award. It is separate from the Navy’s F/A-XX contract, not a second stage of the same aircraft program.
How are the Navy’s F/A-XX and Air Force’s F-47 different?
| Comparison | Navy F/A-XX | Air Force F-47 |
|---|---|---|
| Service and operating context | Navy fighter program; intended for carrier aviation. Boeing describes it as the Navy’s first sixth-generation platform. (Boeing, September 29, 2026: announcement) | Air Force Next Generation Air Dominance platform, designated F-47. (Air Combat Command, March 2025: announcement) |
| Publicly described aircraft context | Intended to augment and replace F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers beginning in the 2030s, according to Axios’s reporting on Pentagon plans. Expected to operate alongside the carrier variant of the F-35 and Collaborative Combat Aircraft. (Axios, 2026) | The Air Combat Command announcement identifies the platform and award; the cited public material does not establish comparable predecessor-replacement details. |
| Award and development stage | Navy selection announced September 29, 2026; Axios describes the award as full-scale development. (Axios, 2026) | Engineering and Manufacturing Development contract awarded in March 2025. (Air Combat Command) |
| Public performance and schedule detail | Technical and programmatic details remain classified; Boeing and Axios do not establish a public range, payload, delivery timing, or aircraft quantity. (Boeing; Axios) | The cited Air Combat Command announcement establishes the award and designation, but not comparable performance specifications. |
The two names refer to separate service programs with different operating contexts. Public information does not establish that the aircraft share a design, nor does it support a meaningful comparison of their classified performance.

What is known—and not known—about F/A-XX?
The Navy program is an award for development, not evidence that an operational aircraft has entered service. Public statements describe its intended role, but key details are unavailable. Boeing says technical and programmatic information is classified; Axios reports Boeing did not disclose how many aircraft are due, delivery timing, range, or payload.

- Intended role: augment and eventually replace F/A-18E/F Super Hornets and EA-18G Growlers, beginning in the 2030s, according to Axios’s account of Pentagon plans.
- Expected force mix: Axios reported that F/A-XX is expected to operate with the carrier variant of the F-35 and Collaborative Combat Aircraft. These are reported program intentions, not proof of fielded capability.
- Reported contract value: more than $20 billion for the full-scale-development contract, according to Axios. Boeing’s own announcement says only multibillion-dollar.
- Unpublished specifics: no established public quantity, delivery schedule, range, payload, or production-unit price.
A Department of Defense FY2026 budget briefing offered earlier context: an official said F-47 was moving forward with $3.5 billion in funding while F/A-XX retained minimal development funding at that point. That was a pre-award budget snapshot, not the Navy program’s status after the September 2026 contract announcement. The briefing is available from the Department of Defense.

What does “sixth-generation” mean here?
In this case, “sixth-generation” is the designation used by Boeing and the military services for their programs; it is not a public specification sheet that independently verifies performance. Boeing’s Steve Parker called F/A-XX “the Navy’s first sixth-generation platform.” Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin described F-47 as “truly the world’s first crewed sixth-generation fighter” in the Air Combat Command announcement. That quotation is the Air Force chief’s characterization, not independent verification of a global first.
Because design details remain classified or undisclosed, claims about specific capabilities should not be inferred from the generation label alone.
