Neither body oil nor stretch-mark cream has a proven advantage for preventing pregnancy stretch marks. The best available synthesis, a 2022 Cochrane review of six trials involving 800 women, found no high-quality evidence that topical preparations prevent marks. Choose based on comfort, ingredients, price and how consistently you will use it—not on promises that one format can stop stretch marks.
The short answer
If your question is “Is body oil or stretch-mark cream better during pregnancy?”, the evidence-based answer is neither. Oils and creams may reduce dryness and make expanding skin feel more comfortable, but no topical product has been shown reliably to prevent striae gravidarum (pregnancy stretch marks).

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) says there is no proof that marketed treatments prevent stretch marks. Its practical distinction is important: a heavy moisturizer may keep skin soft, but it will not remove existing marks. The NHS likewise says evidence is limited for oils or creams preventing marks.

What the strongest evidence found
Six trials, 800 participants
The 2022 Cochrane review located six trials with a total of 800 pregnant women. The preparations studied included cocoa butter, olive oil, vitamin-E products and hyaluronic-acid products. Because the products and study methods varied, the findings do not establish a winning oil, cream or ingredient.
Across the review, the authors found no high-quality evidence supporting any topical preparation for preventing pregnancy stretch marks. The evidence base was relatively small and heterogeneous, so it cannot prove that every possible formula is ineffective; it does show that confident prevention claims are not justified by the trials available.
What the reported statistics mean
| Outcome | Result | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Active topical preparation versus placebo or no treatment | Risk ratio 0.74 (95% confidence interval 0.53–1.03); five trials, 474 women | The interval includes no difference, so the result does not establish a dependable prevention effect. |
| Severity of stretch marks | Standardized mean difference −0.31 (95% confidence interval −1.06 to 0.44); two trials, 255 women | There was no clear difference in how severe marks became. |
A risk ratio below 1 can look encouraging at first glance, but the confidence interval is the essential qualification here: it crosses 1. In practical terms, the trials do not allow you to rely on an active oil or cream to prevent marks.
Why guidance is cautious
ACOG’s statement, “There is no proof that any of these treatments work,” reflects the difference between moisturization and prevention. The NHS uses similar language, noting “limited evidence about whether oils or creams help prevent stretch marks from appearing in the first place.” Neither organization identifies oil or cream as superior.
Why pregnancy stretch marks are so common
Stretch marks are a form of scarring that can develop when skin is stretched during pregnancy. Growth of the abdomen and breasts, changes in body size and biological differences in skin structure all play a role. A product can make the surface feel less dry, but it cannot control every factor involved in whether marks form.

Estimates vary by source and definition. The background to the Cochrane review describes pregnancy stretch marks in roughly 50% to 90% of pregnancies. The NHS says they affect around eight in 10 pregnant women. These figures describe how common marks are; they do not mean a particular oil or cream will prevent them.
Marks commonly become paler after birth. Fading is gradual and incomplete for some people, and no cream or oil should be presented as a guaranteed way to erase them.

Body oil versus stretch-mark cream
The following comparison separates comfort and convenience from clinical claims. The evidence does not support a prevention advantage for either format.
| Factor | Body oil | Stretch-mark cream or lotion |
|---|---|---|
| Prevention evidence | No reliable advantage over cream or no treatment has been demonstrated. | No reliable advantage over oil or no treatment has been demonstrated. |
| Skin feel | Usually more slippery and may leave a surface film. Some people like the glide; others dislike residue on clothing or bedding. | Often spreads with less slip and may feel easier to layer under clothing. Texture varies widely by formula. |
| Moisturization | Can soften dry-feeling skin while you use it. | Can soften dry-feeling skin while you use it; a heavier formula may feel more protective. |
| Application routine | Works best when you are comfortable allowing time for absorption and handling a potentially slippery bottle. | Often more convenient for quick application and dressing immediately afterward. |
| Ingredient screening | Read the complete ingredient list; “natural” does not automatically mean suitable or non-irritating. | Read the complete ingredient list and avoid retinoids during pregnancy. |
| Value | Pay for texture and tolerability, not a promise of guaranteed prevention. | Pay for a formula you will use comfortably, not a premium label claiming it can stop marks. |
“Oil” and “cream” are product formats, not proof of performance. Two oils can have very different ingredients, and two creams can feel completely different. A lower-cost, fragrance-free moisturizer that you use regularly may be a more rational choice than an expensive product marketed as a medical solution.
How to choose a product during pregnancy
1. Start with your actual goal
If your goal is prevention, set expectations before buying: current evidence cannot promise that any topical preparation will stop marks. If your goal is comfort, choose the texture that reduces tightness or dryness without making you itch, feel greasy or dislike your routine.

2. Read the full ingredient list
Do not judge safety from the front label alone. Check every ingredient and ask your prenatal clinician or pharmacist about unfamiliar active ingredients, especially products sold as treatments rather than simple moisturizers. A product’s marketing name does not establish pregnancy safety.

3. Exclude retinoids
The NHS states that retinoid creams should not be used during pregnancy because they may harm the baby. This includes products marketed with retinol or prescription-strength retinoid names such as tretinoin. Do not start a retinoid for stretch marks while pregnant; discuss alternatives with your obstetric clinician.
4. Consider fragrance and irritation
Pregnancy can make smells and skin sensations harder to tolerate. If a scented oil or cream causes nausea, burning, itching or a rash, stop using it rather than trying to push through. A simpler, low-scent or fragrance-free formula may be easier to continue.
5. Test your routine cautiously
Apply a small amount to a limited area first if you are trying a new product, and monitor for irritation. Keep the bottle or ingredient list available in case you need to ask a clinician about a reaction. Stop using any product that causes significant discomfort.
6. Choose a routine you can maintain
Apply your chosen moisturizer when your skin feels dry or tight and when the product will not interfere with dressing. Consistency can improve comfort, but it should not be confused with proof that regular application prevents stretch marks. There is no established schedule, amount or massage technique that guarantees prevention.

Does cocoa butter work?
Cocoa butter is a reasonable example of a “stretch-mark” ingredient to ask about because cocoa-butter preparations were included in pregnancy trials. That inclusion means it has been studied; it does not mean the trials proved that cocoa butter prevents marks.
If you enjoy a cocoa-butter lotion’s feel and it does not irritate your skin, you can use it as a moisturizer for softness. Treat claims such as “prevents 100% of stretch marks” or “guaranteed pregnancy protection” as unsupported by the evidence summarized by Cochrane, ACOG and the NHS.
What about olive oil, vitamin E and hyaluronic acid?
These ingredients also appeared among preparations evaluated in the Cochrane review. The review did not find high-quality evidence that any of them reliably prevents pregnancy stretch marks. An ingredient’s popularity, price or association with skin care does not substitute for a demonstrated benefit in pregnancy.
Use them only if the complete formula is suitable for you and the product provides the comfort you want. If a formula contains a retinoid or another active your prenatal clinician advises against, do not use it simply because the main marketing ingredient sounds gentle.

No. A moisturizer may make skin feel smoother or less dry, but ACOG specifically says that keeping skin soft will not get rid of stretch marks. The NHS says marks often fade after birth but may not disappear completely.

During pregnancy, the realistic aim is comfort and safe skin care rather than removal. If marks remain bothersome after delivery, discuss post-pregnancy options with a dermatologist. The appropriate timing and treatment depend on breastfeeding, skin type, the color and age of the marks, and your medical history; do not begin a treatment during pregnancy on the assumption that it is harmless.
When to stop a product and seek advice
- Stop and seek medical advice for a severe reaction: swelling, blistering, widespread hives, intense burning or difficulty breathing requires prompt attention.
- Ask about persistent irritation: redness, itching or a rash that does not settle after stopping the product may need assessment by your obstetric clinician or a dermatologist.
- Discuss sudden or unusual changes: rapidly appearing, very widespread marks or changes accompanied by other symptoms deserve clinical review rather than more aggressive self-treatment.
- Check every unfamiliar active: bring the packaging or a photograph of the ingredient list to your prenatal appointment.
These precautions are about your symptoms and the formula you are using, not about choosing oil versus cream. A different texture cannot make an irritating or unsuitable ingredient safe.
A practical decision guide
Choose an oil when
- You prefer a slippery massage-like application and do not mind waiting for absorption.
- You want a simple moisturizer for softness and have checked the ingredient list.
- You can use it without slipping hazards, staining or irritation.
Choose a cream or lotion when
- You want a less greasy feel or need to dress soon after applying it.
- You prefer a heavier moisturizer for dry-feeling skin.
- The formula is comfortable enough that you will use it consistently.
Choose neither and ask a clinician first when
- The product contains a retinoid such as retinol or tretinoin.
- You have a history of significant fragrance or cosmetic reactions.
- You are unsure about an unfamiliar active ingredient or have a current rash.
How to judge product claims and price
Marketing often turns “moisturizes” into “prevents.” Those are different claims. A product can be pleasant, reduce the feeling of dryness and still have no demonstrated effect on whether stretch marks form. Look for transparent ingredient labeling and realistic language.
A premium price is not evidence of superior prevention. The Cochrane review did not establish a dependable benefit for the tested topical categories, so spending more cannot guarantee a better outcome. Compare products on the things you can evaluate directly: fragrance, texture, packaging, ease of spreading, irritation and cost per use.
For shoppers searching for a specific category, “cocoa-butter stretch-mark lotion” accurately describes a product type that has been included in pregnancy trials. It must still be presented honestly: trial inclusion does not prove prevention, and the individual formula must be checked for pregnancy-appropriate ingredients.
Bottom line for pregnancy skin care
Body oil and stretch-mark cream are tied on prevention because neither has a proven ability to stop pregnancy stretch marks. Stretch marks are common—estimated at 50% to 90% in the Cochrane review background and around eight in 10 pregnant women by the NHS—and biology matters more than the format on the shelf.
Use a tolerable moisturizer for softness and comfort, avoid retinoids, check unfamiliar ingredients with your prenatal clinician, and reject guarantees of prevention or removal. The product that fits your skin and routine is the practical winner, even though it cannot promise a mark-free pregnancy.
