Augments improve a normal Black Ops 7 Zombies build more than Relics. Augments directly change how your Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades work, so their effects appear in ordinary matches. Relics are primarily Cursed Survival modifiers: you select them to raise the difficulty and pursue higher-tier rewards. They are not documented as permanent upgrades to a Standard, Directed, or Survival loadout.
Unlock Augments first if your goal is stronger combat, better survivability, or more flexible builds. Prioritize Relics when your goal is specifically to push Cursed Survival tiers, accept extra difficulty, or chase its reward track.

Relics vs. Augments at a glance
| Question | Augments | Relics |
|---|---|---|
| What do they modify? | Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades | Cursed Survival run parameters and difficulty |
| Where do they matter? | Normal loadouts and match-to-match build choices | Cursed Survival on existing Round-Based Zombies maps |
| Direct combat effect? | Yes. Major and Minor effects alter enhancement behavior. | Not established as a permanent combat enhancement for ordinary modes |
| Main reason to pursue them | Build power, coverage, survivability, and utility | Challenge scaling, tier progression, and Cursed rewards |
| How are they earned? | Research diagrams for each enhancement | Relics are unlocked and then selected for Cursed runs |
| Best first choice for most players | Yes | Only for a Cursed-specific objective |
This is a mechanics-based recommendation, not a universal damage ranking. No official controlled test establishes that one system produces higher numbers for every weapon, map, squad, or playstyle.

Relics are Cursed Survival modifiers
Relics belong to the Cursed Survival risk-and-reward layer. In the official Season 02 description, players choose the Relics they have unlocked in Cursed on existing Round-Based Zombies maps “to increase the difficulty,” then try to survive as long as possible. That wording defines their primary job: a Relic makes the run harder rather than adding a new behavior to a Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade.

The practical result is that a Relic is a run-parameter decision. You select it when you want a more demanding ruleset and a higher ceiling for Cursed progression. It is not the same kind of upgrade as an Augment, which is researched and equipped as part of a loadout.
What Relics can unlock or improve
Cursed Survival ties Relic use to tiered benefits. The published examples include Golden Armor, Pack-a-Punch IV, and Ultra Weapon Rarity, along with reward-track items such as GobbleGum, XP, charms, and upgraded run-parameter rewards. These are benefits associated with progressing through Cursed objectives; they do not establish that a Relic permanently strengthens your ordinary Zombies classes.
| Cursed tier example | Published survival threshold | Published XP example |
|---|---|---|
| Tier I Relics | Round 25 | 10,000 XP |
| Tier II Relics | Round 50 | 20,000 XP |
| Tier III Relics | Round 75 | 30,000 XP |
Those figures are the Season 02 examples published by Call of Duty/Treyarch in 2026. They describe the cited reward thresholds, not a guarantee that every future season will use the same rounds, values, or item pool.

Are Relics permanent upgrades?
Do not treat Relics as permanent build upgrades unless a later official patch explicitly changes their function. The established description is that unlocked Relics are selected in Cursed to increase difficulty. Their value is therefore mode-specific: they help you enter and optimize a harder Cursed run, while Augments change the enhancements you bring into a match.
What Augments do in BO7 Zombies
Augments change enhancement behavior
Augments are researched modifiers attached to three enhancement families: Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades. Each enhancement has its own research diagram. Instead of changing the overall rules of a Cursed run, an Augment changes what one of your equipped tools does—such as its coverage, trigger conditions, armor interaction, healing, crowd control, or utility.
Activision and Treyarch reported 66 new Augment choices, bringing the total to 192 Augments in Black Ops 7. The launch overview also says Augment research progress from Black Ops 6 continues into Black Ops 7. If you completed eligible research in Black Ops 6, that progression is carried forward rather than requiring you to start that research from zero.
How the research diagrams and slots work
The launch material lists 12 Perk-a-Colas, six Ammo Mods, and six Field Upgrades. Every enhancement has a research diagram. The documented progression works like this:

- Choose an enhancement family. Pick the Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade whose behavior you want to alter.
- Research its Augments. Work through that enhancement’s diagram to unlock its available Major and Minor choices.
- Complete all eight Augments in the diagram. Finishing the eight unlocks the Extra Slot Minor Augment.
- Equip a combination for the match. The official description says a fully researched enhancement has three active Augments in-game: one Major and two Minor, with the Extra Slot enabling the second Minor.
The important distinction is that the research is permanent progression for the enhancement, while the Major and Minor effects are loadout choices you can change between matches.
Concrete examples of build impact
Official Season 01 examples show why Augments have a direct effect on a build. Shatter Blast’s Big Game can allow the Ammo Mod to activate on Elite enemies. Blast Repair restores some armor when Shatter Blast destroys enemy armor. The first example expands where the effect can trigger; the second converts a successful armor break into survivability. Both alter what happens during ordinary combat, unlike a Relic that raises Cursed difficulty.
Which system improves a build more?
For direct combat power: Augments
Augments win this category because they modify the tools that define your loadout. A Major effect can change an enhancement’s behavior, while Minor effects can add supporting utility. Depending on the enhancement and choices you research, that can mean better crowd control, Elite coverage, armor sustain, healing, or Field Upgrade uptime.
For use across ordinary modes: Augments
Augments are designed for the Perk-a-Colas, Ammo Mods, and Field Upgrades you use in your loadout. Relics are documented as selections for Cursed Survival. If most of your time is spent in Standard, Directed, or ordinary Survival matches, Augment research is the progression system that directly follows you into those builds.
For challenge scaling: Relics
Relics win when the objective is to make a run harder. Their stated purpose is to increase Cursed difficulty, so they are the relevant choice for self-imposed challenge runs and higher Cursed tiers.
For reward chasing: Relics
If you are targeting Cursed-only progression, Relics are the path that matters. The published examples connect higher Relic tiers and survival rounds with XP and rewards such as Golden Armor, Pack-a-Punch IV, Ultra Weapon Rarity, GobbleGum, and charms.
For build experimentation: Augments
Augments offer more room to tune a build because you can combine one Major with two Minor effects after completing an enhancement’s research. You can change those choices to suit a weapon, map, enemy mix, or squad role without deliberately making the entire run harder.

What should you unlock first?
Choose Augments first when your goal is general progression
Start with Augments if you want one investment to improve repeated ordinary matches. Prioritize an enhancement you already use often, then research it far enough to unlock the effects that match your role. A player who frequently loses armor may value an effect such as Blast Repair; a player who struggles with Elite enemies may prefer coverage like Big Game when using Shatter Blast.

Your first target should be unfinished research that affects the loadouts you actually play, not simply the enhancement with the largest total number of choices.
Choose Relics first only when Cursed is the goal
Relics should move ahead of Augments in your priority list when you have a specific Cursed objective: reaching Round 25, 50, or 75 under the listed Relic tiers; pursuing the associated XP and item rewards; or testing how far your team can survive with increased difficulty. In that case, the Relic is not competing with an Augment for the same job. It is the entry condition for the challenge you have chosen.
Use a two-track plan if you play both modes
Players who alternate between ordinary matches and Cursed Survival do not need to choose one system permanently. Research Augments during routine play so your baseline loadouts improve, then reserve selected sessions for unlocking and testing Relics. This keeps your general build progression moving without treating Cursed difficulty modifiers as a replacement for combat customization.
How to build around Augments
Step 1: Identify the problem your loadout has
Do not begin with a random Augment name. Identify whether the failure is a lack of crowd control, unreliable Elite damage, armor loss, poor recovery, or insufficient Field Upgrade utility. The right research target is the enhancement that addresses that recurring problem.
Step 2: Select the enhancement family
Perk-a-Cola Augments are the natural place to start when the issue is a sustained player attribute or defensive routine. Ammo Mod Augments are relevant when the issue is enemy control, armor interaction, or Elite coverage. Field Upgrade Augments are the appropriate target when your squad depends on timed abilities and needs more utility or uptime.
Step 3: Match the Major effect to your role
Use the Major Augment to define the enhancement’s main job. For an Ammo Mod, that might mean choosing an effect that broadens the enemies it can affect. For a defensive or utility enhancement, choose the Major that best solves the problem you identified rather than selecting by rarity or name alone.

- Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
Step 4: Add Minors that support the same plan
Minor Augments should reinforce the Major effect. For example, a setup built around breaking enemy armor should favor a Minor that turns that event into protection or recovery when available. Avoid combining effects that trigger under unrelated conditions unless your weapon and team reliably create both situations.
Step 5: Finish the diagram for the Extra Slot
Research all eight Augments for the enhancement when you want the complete configuration. The Extra Slot Minor Augment is unlocked only after the diagram is fully researched, and it enables the second Minor in-game. This is the point at which the enhancement reaches the documented one-Major, two-Minor configuration.
Step 6: Recheck the build after changing weapons or maps
An Augment that is useful against armored or Elite-heavy encounters may be less valuable in a round focused on common enemies. Treat the loadout as a set of triggers: ask whether the enemies and situations in your next match will activate them often enough to justify the slot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use Relics in Cursed Survival
Step 1: Define the target tier and round
Pick the outcome before selecting Relics. The published examples associate Tier I with Round 25 and 10,000 XP, Tier II with Round 50 and 20,000 XP, and Tier III with Round 75 and 30,000 XP. A target lets you choose a difficulty you can realistically survive instead of stacking modifiers without a plan.
Step 2: Select only unlocked Relics
Enter Cursed on an existing Round-Based Zombies map and choose from the Relics you have unlocked. The selection is a Cursed run decision; it is not an Augment slot and does not replace your Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade research.
Step 3: Build the underlying loadout for survival
Because Relics increase the challenge, compensate with a well-researched ordinary loadout. Use the Augments that improve the tools your squad relies on, then select Relics to reach the intended challenge tier. This is the strongest reason to pursue both systems: Augments support survival, while Relics set the risk and reward.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Higher tiers can expose you to more demanding conditions while offering a higher reward ceiling. If the team routinely fails before the target round, reduce the Relic burden or improve the underlying Augment setup before attempting the next tier. A Relic is useful only if the squad can turn its extra difficulty into progress.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Calling a Relic a permanent upgrade
This confuses a Cursed run modifier with loadout progression. The established information only supports selecting unlocked Relics in Cursed to increase difficulty. Keep permanent research and match configuration in the Augment system.
Assuming more difficulty means more ordinary-mode power
A harder Cursed run can have better reward opportunities, but that does not prove that the Relic itself improves a Standard, Directed, or ordinary Survival build. Use Relics for Cursed objectives and Augments for enhancement behavior.
Ignoring the Extra Slot requirement
Researching a few effects does not immediately provide the full three-Augment configuration. The Extra Slot Minor Augment comes after all eight Augments in that enhancement’s research diagram are unlocked.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoosing by total count instead of trigger frequency
Black Ops 7 has 192 Augments in total, but a large pool does not make every choice equally useful to every player. Select effects that activate in the enemies and situations you actually face, then change them when your map, weapon, or team role changes.
Expecting a universal best Augment
The official examples establish what individual effects do, not a single best combination for every build. Weapon type, enemy composition, map, squad coordination, and personal skill all affect how often an effect activates. Treat “best” as a loadout-specific decision unless a controlled test supports a broader claim.
A practical unlock order
- Audit carried-over research. Check which Black Ops 6 Augment diagrams are already complete in Black Ops 7.
- Pick one frequently used enhancement. Start with the Perk-a-Cola, Ammo Mod, or Field Upgrade that appears in most of your classes.
- Research toward a defined combat improvement. Prioritize Elite coverage, crowd control, armor sustain, healing, or utility according to your recurring problem.
- Complete that diagram. Unlock all eight Augments to open the Extra Slot Minor Augment and the documented one-Major, two-Minor setup.
- Test the configuration in ordinary matches. Keep it if its triggers occur reliably; replace effects that rarely activate.
- Begin Relic progression for a clear Cursed target. Select a tier and round, then use the improved loadout to attempt the run.
- Raise the Relic tier only after the current target is repeatable. This avoids confusing a failed build with an intentionally higher challenge.
What can change over time
Black Ops 7 is a live seasonal game. Item counts, Augment effects, Relic behavior, reward thresholds, and Cursed rules can be tuned in later updates. The figures here—66 new Augment choices, 192 total Augments, the listed enhancement counts, and the Season 02 XP examples—describe the cited launch and Season 02 material from 2025 and 2026. Check the latest official patch and seasonal notes before planning around a specific effect or reward value.
The decision in one sentence
Choose Augments to make the build itself work better; choose Relics to make Cursed Survival harder and more rewarding. For most players, the efficient order is Augments first, then Relics when a Cursed objective justifies the added risk.
