The bm.dll message does not identify one universal Windows component. On Windows 10 or 11, first record the complete error and the program that triggered it, then determine whether the file belongs to Windows or to an installed application. Run Microsoft’s supported DISM-then-SFC repair sequence for possible system corruption; if the error points to an application folder, update, repair, or reinstall that application instead. Do not download a replacement DLL from an unverified site.
What “bm.dll is missing” means
A DLL is a library that an executable loads for shared functions. When Windows shows “bm.dll is missing,” “bm.dll was not found,” or “the code execution cannot proceed because bm.dll was not found,” the immediate problem is that the requesting program cannot load the file it expects. The message alone does not tell you which product owns the file.

Microsoft does not document bm.dll as a universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 system component. A third-party file directory associates one copy with C:Program Filesadobeadobe after effects cs3support files and labels it a non-system module (ProcessLibrary, accessed October 16, 2026). An Adobe Community crash report also lists BM.dll among Adobe application binaries. Those references support an application-specific diagnosis, but they do not prove that every bm.dll error comes from Adobe or from the same version of a file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat distinction determines the safe repair. A missing file in a protected Windows directory is investigated with Windows component repair. A file expected inside an application’s own directory is normally restored by repairing or reinstalling that parent application. A DLL found in an unexpected location should be treated as a security and integrity question before it is copied, deleted, or replaced.

Identify the requesting program before changing files
Capture the complete message
- Take a screenshot or copy the entire dialog, including the executable name, any stated folder, and the action that triggered it.
- Note whether the error appears when Windows starts, when you launch a particular application, or when you open a project or file. This timing often identifies the parent program even when the dialog does not show a path.
- Write down whether the message names
bm.dllin uppercase, lowercase, or with a longer path. The capitalization is not the ownership evidence; the executable and path are.
Check Event Viewer for the executable
If the dialog is vague, Windows may record the failed module and application in Event Viewer:
- Press
Win, type Event Viewer, and open it. - Expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Use Find… from the Action menu, search for
bm.dll, and inspect entries created at the time of the failure. - Record the Faulting application name, Faulting module name, and any path shown in the event details. Do not assume that a faulting module is the owner; it is the clue that must be matched to the application installation.
Inspect the file path and signature
Search for bm.dll only to establish where copies already exist, not to select a download. In File Explorer, right-click a found file, choose Properties, and review the General, Details, and Digital Signatures tabs. A path under a known application directory is different from one under a Windows-protected directory or an unrelated temporary folder. A missing signature is not proof of malware, but an unexpected path, unfamiliar publisher, or recently created copy warrants a reputable malware scan before you run the associated program or move the file.
Choose the repair route
| What you find | First repair to try | Why |
|---|---|---|
bm.dll is in a protected Windows directory, or several Windows features are failing |
Run DISM, then sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt |
Microsoft’s sequence repairs the Windows component store first and then checks protected system files. |
| The error names one application and the expected path is inside that application’s folder | Use that application’s update, repair, or reinstall option | The file appears to be application-specific rather than a universal Windows component. |
| The path is unexpected, duplicated in unrelated folders, or has an untrusted signature | Scan for malware and investigate the parent program before replacing or deleting anything | A copied DLL can be the wrong build or a malicious file. |
| DISM and SFC complete successfully but one application still fails | Stop repeating system scans and repair the named application | Successful Windows integrity checks do not restore a private application file. |
| No application is named and the failure occurs at startup | Use Event Viewer and startup troubleshooting to identify the parent executable | You need ownership information before choosing a source for the DLL. |
Run Microsoft’s DISM and SFC sequence
Microsoft’s guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 puts Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) before System File Checker (SFC). Microsoft explains: “DISM provides the files required to repair your corrupted files. You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” The commands repair Windows components; they are not a license to download an arbitrary bm.dll.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
/Online targets the currently running Windows installation. /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth checks and repairs the component store that Windows uses as a source for protected-file repairs. Leave the window open until DISM reports completion; a progress percentage that pauses for a while is not, by itself, evidence of failure.
Step 3: Run System File Checker
After DISM finishes, run:
sfc /scannow
SFC scans protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies with a cached copy when one is available. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. The final message matters:
- “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” Windows did not find corruption in the protected files it checked.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” Restart Windows and test the action that produced the error.
- “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Follow the log-investigation step below; do not substitute a downloaded DLL.
- “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” Restart and run the scan again. If it still fails, use Microsoft’s documented CBS log information to identify what could not be checked.
Step 4: Restart and test
Restart Windows after the commands finish. Reproduce the original action once: launch the named application or perform the startup action that displayed the message. If the error remains but Windows itself is stable, the result points toward the application-specific path rather than a general Windows-file failure.

DISM normally obtains repair content through Windows Update. If Windows Update is unavailable, blocked, or missing the required files, Microsoft says a running Windows installation, a network-share Windows folder, or matching installation media such as a USB drive or DVD can provide the source.

- Use media that matches the installed Windows edition and architecture. A mismatched source can fail or repair the wrong component set.
- Use a source you control, such as official installation media or an administrator-provided network share. Do not point DISM at a random folder downloaded from the web.
- Follow Microsoft’s DISM source syntax for the media you have and substitute the correct drive letter or network path. The exact source path depends on the media layout and is not interchangeable across editions.
- After DISM completes with a valid source, run
sfc /scannowagain, restart, and retest.
If SFC says it could not repair files, Microsoft recommends inspecting the Component-Based Servicing (CBS) log and determining whether the named file is actually a Windows-protected component. If the log does not identify bm.dll as a protected Windows file, system repair is unlikely to be the correct way to obtain it.
Repair the application that requested bm.dll
Use the application’s built-in updater
When the error names a program and the DLL path belongs to that program, open the publisher’s installer or updater rather than copying a file from another computer. Install the current update supported by your edition of Windows. An update can restore files that were removed or damaged and can align the DLL with the executable that loads it.
Try Windows’ repair option
For applications registered with Windows, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10). Select the affected application, choose Advanced options when available, and use Repair. The label and availability vary by application; some desktop installers provide their own Repair choice in Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
A repair normally preserves user data, but application-specific projects and settings can have their own backup requirements. Close the program first and keep copies of important project files before changing the installation.

Uninstall and reinstall from the publisher
If repair and update do not restore the expected file, uninstall the named application using its normal uninstaller, restart Windows, and reinstall it from the publisher’s legitimate installer. Use the same product edition and plug-in set that created the original project. Do not copy bm.dll from an unrelated release: DLLs can depend on the exact application build and processor architecture, and a wrong version can create a new load failure.
Check application dependencies
Some programs load optional components only when a particular feature, plug-in, or project is opened. If the error appears only for one project or plug-in, update or reinstall that component as well as the main application. If the parent application has a support log or crash-report folder, preserve it before uninstalling so the publisher can match the failure to the correct build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate an unexpected or suspicious file location
A bm.dll under an application’s installation folder can be consistent with an application-owned module. A copy under an unrelated user, temporary, or startup folder needs more scrutiny. Do not launch an executable solely to “see if it works,” and do not delete the file before recording its path and properties.
- Disconnect removable storage and close the program that triggered the alert.
- Run a scan with a reputable, up-to-date antivirus or antimalware product. A scan is a precaution based on the unexpected location; it is not proof that the file is malicious.
- Review Task Manager > Startup apps and the application listed in Event Viewer. Disable only an entry you recognize and can restore, and avoid deleting registry entries as a first response.
- After the scan, obtain the affected application’s installer from its publisher and reinstall it if the file is confirmed to belong there.
- If a security product quarantines the file, keep the detection and path details for the application publisher or a qualified technician. Do not restore a quarantined DLL merely to bypass the error.
What not to do
- Do not use a standalone DLL download site. There is no single authoritative
bm.dllpackage identified for every Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation. A downloaded file can be the wrong version or architecture, and it can introduce malware. - Do not copy a DLL from another PC. Two computers can have different Windows editions, application builds, updates, or processor architectures.
- Do not rename random files to
bm.dll. The requesting executable may require a specific export set and build. - Do not place the file in
C:WindowsSystem32or another system directory just to suppress the dialog. That can hide the ownership problem and affect other programs. - Do not repeatedly run SFC when the evidence points to one application. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not every private file installed by a desktop program.
- Do not remove a file before checking its path and signature. You may destroy the evidence needed to identify the parent application or undo a legitimate installation.
Use these troubleshooting branches
The error appears only when one program starts
Capture the executable and path, inspect the application folder, then use the program’s update, repair, or reinstall process. Run DISM and SFC if Windows has other symptoms such as system errors, unresponsiveness, or freezing, but a clean system scan does not replace application repair.
Best Value
The error appears during every startup
Use Event Viewer to identify the startup executable. Check Task Manager > Startup apps and the program’s own uninstaller. If the parent application is no longer needed, uninstall it normally and restart. If it is needed, reinstall it from the publisher rather than deleting the startup entry alone.
DISM and SFC report repairs, but the message returns
Restart once more and confirm whether the error is tied to a specific application. If it is, inspect that program’s folder and run its installer repair. If Windows features continue to fail, record the DISM and SFC result text and investigate the CBS log before attempting another source.
The application was recently moved to another drive
Restore the original installation through the application’s installer or reinstall it at the desired location. Moving only the executable or selected DLLs can leave registration, dependencies, and relative paths inconsistent.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The file exists, but Windows still says it is missing
Verify that the file is in the directory the executable actually searches and that its signature and version match the application. A file with the right name can still be unusable if it belongs to another release or architecture. Use the publisher’s installer to replace it instead of manually editing search paths.
Quick Recap
Confirm the fix safely
- Restart Windows after DISM/SFC or an application reinstall.
- Launch the exact executable named in the original dialog, not merely a shortcut to a different edition.
- Repeat the operation that first triggered the error, such as opening the project or plug-in.
- Check Event Viewer for a new error at the same time. An unrelated warning should not be treated as proof that
bm.dllis still failing. - Keep the original screenshot, path, and repair results until the application has worked through a normal session.
