If your Microsoft Teams video looks blurry or blocky, first check whether the same camera looks poor in another app. If it does, investigate the lens, lighting, camera resolution, driver, or hardware. If the image is clear elsewhere but poor in Teams, check the selected camera and settings, then use Call health during the affected call to look for network or device-performance problems.
Find out whether the camera or Teams is causing the blur
Open the Windows Camera app or another video app and compare its preview with Teams. This is a practical diagnostic check: a consistently soft image across apps points toward the camera, lens, lighting, driver, or device; a problem limited to Teams makes its camera selection, effects, app state, or call conditions more likely.

Microsoft lists poor camera resolution, a dirty or damaged lens, and network issues as possible causes of blurry or low-quality video. See Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guidance.

Check the camera and the scene
- Clean the lens gently and check for an obstruction, lens cover, or privacy shutter that is partly closed.
- Improve the light on your face or subject. A dim or uneven scene can make a camera image look poor even when the connection is fine.
- Turn off background blur and other effects briefly so you can judge the unaltered camera image. Microsoft notes that, in personal Teams for Windows, blur can conceal a covered lens or privacy screen. Its personal Teams camera troubleshooting is scoped to Windows and personal accounts.
- Check that Teams has selected the camera you intend to use. If you have more than one camera, test each one.
Teams also provides a brightness adjustment for video. Microsoft explains how to use video in Teams.

Check call quality while the problem is happening
During the affected meeting, open More actions > Settings > Call health. Microsoft says the displayed metrics refresh every 15 seconds. Its published typical diagnostic values are under 200 ms for round-trip time and under 2% for received packet loss. These are guidance for diagnosing a call, not guarantees of sharp video. Details are on Microsoft’s Call health and meeting quality page.
Look at the values during the blur, rather than relying on a reading taken after conditions have changed. Higher packet loss or round-trip time can indicate network trouble. Reduced sent resolution or frame rate can show that the stream is adapting, but a low frame rate can also result from limited computer performance or hardware resources.

Understand why Teams video quality changes
Teams adjusts media quality and bandwidth use according to conditions and how the call is being used. When bandwidth is insufficient, it can reduce video quality and may prioritize audio. Layout, resolution, frame rate, device capabilities, and available system resources also affect what participants see. Microsoft describes video behavior and brightness controls in Use video in Microsoft Teams and adaptive media behavior in its network preparation guidance for organizations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat means pixelation is not proof that the camera is defective. Conversely, a normal network reading does not establish that the camera or computer is performing well. Microsoft’s Teams call troubleshooting guidance for administrators separates network and device causes and discusses stream diagnostics.

Work through the likely fixes in order
- Compare previews: test the camera in Windows Camera or another video app, then in Teams.
- Fix the image conditions: check the lens and privacy shutter, improve lighting, and temporarily disable blur or other effects.
- Confirm the Teams setup: select the intended camera and close other apps that might be using it. If using an external camera, disconnect and reconnect it. Microsoft’s camera troubleshooting steps for Teams also cover restarting and updating.
- Check the live call: open Call health while the issue is occurring and note whether network metrics, sent resolution, or frame rate change along with the picture.
- Update or escalate: install current Teams and operating-system updates. If the problem persists across camera apps, consult your device manufacturer or IT team, especially on a managed device or network.
When a different webcam is worth considering
Consider an external USB webcam only if the cross-app comparison points to the built-in camera’s resolution or physical condition. A different camera may improve a camera-limited image, but it will not correct packet loss, insufficient network bandwidth, or inadequate computer resources. Check lighting and settings first; the evidence in the image preview should guide whether hardware is the issue.
