Depending on the model, the screen may show playback controls and album art, act as a bedside clock and alarm, or provide customizable pixel animations. Those are different product categories, even though each is marketed as a speaker with a display.
The right comparison therefore starts with the screen’s job and your normal viewing distance, not with the word “display” alone. A small touchscreen can be excellent when you can reach it on a desk, while a clock-radio LCD may be more useful across a bedside table. The examples below show how these approaches differ.

What a display adds to a Bluetooth speaker
Most portable speakers communicate through buttons, status lights and a phone. Adding a screen can make information visible without opening an app, but the benefit depends on what the panel is designed to show.
Touchscreen control and artwork
A touchscreen can turn the speaker into a nearby control surface. WiiM Sound’s small panel can show presets, playback options, source selection and equalizer settings, as well as clock designs, dynamic wallpapers and album artwork. Wallpaper* identifies the panel as a 1.8-inch touchscreen intended for album art, controls, wallpaper and clock faces (What Hi-Fi? review; Wallpaper*).

Time, alarms and room information
A clock-style display prioritizes information that remains useful when music is paused. Philips TAS3600B/00 combines a large clock display with room-temperature information, dual alarms, snooze and a night light. Philips describes its purpose succinctly as “Plays your tunes. Tells the time.” (Philips product page).
Pixel visuals and customization
A pixel display treats the speaker as part audio device and part decoration. Divoom Tiivoo-2 can show clock faces, synced photos, scrolling lyrics, equalizer-style visuals and user-created pixel art. Its visual functions are meant to be watched and customized rather than used solely to operate playback (Divoom).
Information-only radio display
JBL Horizon 2 FM uses an LCD to show the time, alarm settings and radio information. It illustrates that a screen can be valuable without album artwork, touch controls or a general-purpose interface (JBL).

The Divoom URL above should be checked carefully before publication because the manufacturer page is the authority for its feature list. In all cases, compare what you can actually see and operate from your usual seat.

How each speaker’s screen works in practice
WiiM Sound: a close-up control panel
WiiM Sound is the closest of these examples to a conventional smart-speaker interface. Its touchscreen can expose presets, playback choices, source selection and EQ settings without requiring a phone. Clock designs and dynamic wallpapers let the panel remain visually active when you are not changing music, and album art can identify what is playing.
That convenience is tied to scale. What Hi-Fi?’s review describes the display as clear up close but says the text is too small to see from a distance. Treat it as a personal control panel on a desk or shelf, not as a room-wide information screen. If you expect to read track titles while sitting several metres away, a phone or larger smart display will be more suitable.
Philips TAS3600B/00: bedside information first
The Philips model is designed around timekeeping as much as audio. Its large clock display, dual alarm and snooze are relevant even when Bluetooth playback is off. A night light adds another bedside function, while room-temperature information gives the screen a purpose beyond showing the current track.

The maker also specifies up to 10 hours of play time; that is a stated maximum rather than an independently measured runtime, and actual results depend on volume and use. Philips says the clock can synchronize with the connected device, which can reduce manual time setting when that feature is supported in your configuration.

Divoom Tiivoo-2: a pixel-art display that doubles as decor
Tiivoo-2 uses a pixel-art panel for visual expression. You can select clock faces, synchronize photos, display scrolling lyrics, show equalizer-style animations and create your own pixel art. Those options make the screen part of the room’s atmosphere, whether the speaker is playing music or acting as a decorative light.
Divoom also lists FM radio, an alarm-clock mode, white-noise functions and a timer. These capabilities are manufacturer descriptions, not results from a controlled independent evaluation. The practical question is whether you want to spend time configuring visuals and whether the pixel panel will be visible from the place where you work or relax.
JBL Horizon 2 FM: simple, legible radio information
Horizon 2 FM takes the least ambitious visual approach. Its LCD communicates the time, alarm settings and radio information. That can be exactly what a bedside listener needs: a glanceable clock and a clear indication of the selected radio or alarm state, without album-art menus or touch navigation.
Because the cited specification does not describe artwork or touchscreen interaction, do not assume those functions are present. Check the regional product page and controls for the edition sold where you live.

Readability matters more than the word “screen”
Screen usefulness is a distance problem. A panel that is readable at arm’s length may be effectively invisible from a sofa. The only independent viewing-distance observation in the cited material concerns WiiM Sound: the reviewer found it clear close up but too small at a distance. That observation should not be generalized to Philips, Divoom or JBL, for which no comparable controlled readability test is provided.
- Desk or bedside table: Small text and touch targets are more practical because you can lean toward the speaker.
- Across a room: Prioritize large numerals and simple status information, such as a clock or alarm state.
- Changing light: Check whether brightness can be adjusted or whether a night mode is offered; a bright decorative panel can be distracting in a bedroom.
- Shared spaces: Album art and animations are useful only if people can see them from the normal listening area.
Before buying, measure the approximate distance from the intended shelf or nightstand to your chair or bed. Product photos rarely convey how small a screen appears in a real room.

Bluetooth or Wi-Fi capability alone does not mean a speaker has a screen. JBL’s comparison of the Authentics 200, 300 and 500 focuses on audio, power or portability and connectivity, but does not identify a display (JBL Authentics comparison).

Choose by the job you want the screen to do
For quick playback control
Choose a touchscreen design such as WiiM Sound if you regularly change presets, sources or EQ from the speaker itself and can stand close enough to read it. It is most convincing on a desk, kitchen counter or shelf beside your chair.
For waking up and checking the time
A clock-radio design such as Philips TAS3600B/00 or JBL Horizon 2 FM makes more sense when the display must remain useful with music paused. Compare alarm behavior, snooze, brightness and night-time lighting before considering artwork.
For room decoration and visual entertainment
Divoom Tiivoo-2 is aimed at owners who want pixel art, photos, lyrics and animations as part of the room. Its value depends on how much you enjoy customizing the display, not simply on whether it produces sound over Bluetooth.
For a speaker that disappears into the background
Skip the display if you will control everything from a phone, place the speaker where the panel cannot be seen, or prefer an uncluttered room. A screen adds cost, power use and visual activity without improving every listening setup.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Define the display task: write down whether you need playback controls, album identification, a clock, an alarm, radio information or decorative visuals.
- Measure viewing distance: use the distance from the planned location to your normal seat or bed, then check whether the maker provides screen-size and brightness information.
- List must-have controls: decide whether touch operation, physical buttons, snooze, a night light or hands-free phone control matters.
- Check inputs and power: verify Bluetooth version or compatibility, wired inputs, removable-media support, battery or mains operation and the maker’s stated runtime where relevant.
- Separate claims from tests: treat feature lists as descriptions of what the manufacturer says the product can do. Look for independent evidence before drawing conclusions about readability, sound quality or battery life.
- Confirm the exact region: radio bands, firmware, included accessories and availability can vary by country and edition.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited pages establish different feature sets, but they do not provide a controlled sound-quality comparison across these speakers. Product specifications such as “up to 10 hours” are not market statistics or laboratory results. They should be read as the maker’s stated maximum under unspecified conditions unless a test method is supplied.
Likewise, no comparable independent legibility test is available for the Philips, Divoom and JBL examples. The WiiM viewing-distance comment is useful as a warning that small text can fail across a room, not as a score for every display speaker. Check the current model and regional configuration before purchase because features and availability can change.
Bottom line
Buy according to the screen’s job. WiiM Sound is the control-and-artwork approach for close viewing; Philips TAS3600B/00 and JBL Horizon 2 FM are information-oriented bedside designs; Divoom Tiivoo-2 makes the display part of the speaker’s visual character. The most useful screen is the one you can read from where you actually sit and that still earns its space when the music is off.
