If your smart lock unlocks unexpectedly or will not lock, first identify which behavior is failing: proximity-based auto-unlock depends on phone location, Bluetooth, and background-app behavior, while a failed lock command may come from settings, batteries, calibration, or a door and bolt that bind. Check phone permissions for auto-unlock problems; check door alignment and the lock’s operation with the door open for failed-lock problems. Exact steps depend on the lock model and phone.
Start by separating auto-unlock from auto-lock
Auto-unlock uses the phone’s proximity or location state to decide when to unlock. A manual lock or unlock command sent from an app is a different operation, and auto-lock may instead be a timer or another model-specific setting. An app command working does not prove that proximity detection is configured correctly; likewise, a proximity issue does not by itself explain a bolt that cannot move.
Before changing settings, note the lock make and model, the app, and the phone operating system. Menu names, supported permissions, batteries, and calibration procedures vary. The Yale steps below apply to Yale Access Auto-Unlock; the Schlage steps apply to the cited Schlage guidance.
If auto-unlock triggers unexpectedly or does not trigger
Check the feature and phone permissions
- In the lock’s app, confirm that Auto-Unlock is enabled and review its status. Do not assume it uses the same logic as a button you tap to unlock.
- For Yale Access, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and location services on the phone. Yale says Auto-Unlock uses these signals and the app’s Home/Away state. In the phone’s app permissions, set Yale Access location access to Always and turn on Precise Location where those controls are available. See Yale’s Auto-Unlock troubleshooting and its iOS instructions.
- On Android, check whether battery optimization is restricting Yale Access and turn it off for the app if it is. Permission and battery-setting paths differ by Android version and phone maker.
Keep the app’s background state and entry route in mind
Do not force-quit Yale Access while relying on Auto-Unlock. Yale warns that force-quitting can cause the app to lose its Home/Away status. If the phone has restarted, or the app’s location state seems wrong, reopen the app and check its status and notifications. Where practical, use the door with the lock as both the entry and exit route: Yale says using another door can delay the attempt until the phone detects the lock.

If the app says Bluetooth is disabled while Bluetooth is on, check that the app itself has Bluetooth permission. Schlage identifies missing app permission as a likely cause of this message; reinstall the app only if restoring permission does not resolve it. Follow Schlage’s troubleshooting guidance for its products.
Recheck settings after phone or app updates
A phone operating-system update can change how an app interacts with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or location services. If the behavior started after an update, review the app’s current permissions and the lock maker’s current instructions rather than assuming the update changed the lock itself. Yale discusses this in its Auto-Unlock instructions.

If the lock fails to lock or reports a jam
Check the door and bolt before changing app settings
- Make sure the door is completely closed. If the door is partly open, the deadbolt may not line up with the strike plate. Schlage specifically advises closing the door fully before attempting to lock it, especially when auto-lock is enabled. See Schlage’s jam-notification guidance.
- With the door open, operate the deadbolt using the keypad or physical key as appropriate for the model. If it moves freely while open but binds when the door is shut, suspect door sag, strike-plate alignment, or door preparation. If it resists even with the door open, an obstruction or a problem in the lock or motor is more likely. Schlage describes this open-door check in its troubleshooting instructions.
- Inspect for debris or anything obstructing the bolt. Compare the installation and door preparation with the exact lock’s instructions; Schlage notes that correct preparation and the supplied strike plate matter for its models.
Verify auto-lock configuration
If the lock works manually but does not lock after the expected delay, confirm that Auto-Lock is enabled and review its delay. In the cited Schlage Encode guidance, pairing and auto-lock settings are managed in the Schlage Home app. Do not apply that app path to another brand or model. See Schlage Encode troubleshooting.
Calibrate only for the exact lock and sensor setup
Calibration steps are model-specific. Yale’s cited recalibration guidance applies only to listed Assure models and has DoorSense qualifications. If a Yale DoorSense-equipped lock reports the wrong door state, check calibration, handing, sensor placement, and alignment using Yale’s instructions: Assure lock calibration and DoorSense troubleshooting. Do not use a calibration procedure intended for a different model.

Check app connection and battery when the lock responds inconsistently
If the lock turns freely with a physical key or thumbturn but does not respond to the app, Yale lists a low battery, a lost app-to-lock connection, physical blockage, or calibration or motor problems among possible causes. Check the app’s connection and battery warnings, and consult the model’s manual before replacing cells or resetting the lock. Yale’s lock and app troubleshooting guide gives its diagnostic advice.
Battery type is not universal. For the specific Schlage models addressed in its low-battery guidance, Schlage recommends four quality alkaline AA batteries. Use that specification only if it matches your model; otherwise follow the lock’s own manual. See Schlage’s troubleshooting page.

When to stop troubleshooting
- Do not force a powered bolt against resistance; it can worsen a mechanical problem.
- If the bolt remains stuck, the motor sounds or behaves abnormally, or the door needs adjustment, contact the lock manufacturer or a qualified locksmith.
- Before a factory reset, confirm the model’s recovery procedure and what the reset removes. The available manufacturer guidance supports checking permissions, configuration, connection, battery, alignment, and model-specific calibration first; it does not establish one reset procedure for all locks.
