Bluetooth 5.4 vs Bluetooth 5.3: Which Version Matters for Windows 11 PCs?

For most Windows 11 PCs, Bluetooth 5.4 is not automatically more useful than Bluetooth 5.3. Windows 11 version 22H2 and later have an in-box Bluetooth Core 5.3 baseline, but the radio, firmware, controller, codec and manufacturer drivers determine the features your computer actually exposes. A 5.4 label alone does not guarantee LE Audio, LC3, Auracast, longer range or lower latency.

If your existing 5.3 radio is stable and works with your headset, upgrading only to obtain the newer number is unlikely to produce a visible benefit. Upgrade when the built-in radio is absent, unreliable or lacks a capability you have verified on both the PC and the accessory—especially LE Audio.

The short answer: buy features, not the version number

Bluetooth Core specifications describe a collection of controller and protocol capabilities. A Windows PC can advertise a newer core version while still lacking the operating-system driver or application path needed for a particular feature. Conversely, an accessory using an earlier core revision can work with a newer host, although newer functions may not be available.

Question What the evidence supports
Windows 11 baseline Microsoft documents Bluetooth Core Specification 5.3 support for Windows 11 version 22H2, all editions.
How Windows identifies the radio Microsoft maps LMP 12 to Core 5.3 and LMP 13 to Core 5.4. The LMP value is the highest core specification the Windows device fully supports.
Does 5.4 guarantee LE Audio? No. LE Audio depends on compatible Bluetooth LE hardware, a supported codec, manufacturer-provided radio and audio drivers, and an LE Audio-capable headset or earbuds.
What changed in the specification? Bluetooth SIG records the Bluetooth Core 5.4 amendment on June 11, 2024, effective July 1, 2024. That date does not mean every Windows installation implements every 5.4 feature.

The practical comparison therefore has four parts: host support (Windows edition, radio and driver), application support (LE Audio, Classic Audio and profiles), accessory support (what the headset declares) and the cost and risk of changing the radio.

What “Bluetooth 5.3” and “Bluetooth 5.4” mean on a PC

Core specification versus a complete feature set

The printed version is the highest Bluetooth Core specification that a controller and its firmware claim to support. It is not a promise that Windows has enabled every optional profile, codec or user-facing feature. A product listing can use “Bluetooth 5.4” while relying on a generic driver that exposes only the functions implemented by the vendor.

Bluetooth also has Classic and Low Energy (LE) paths. Headphones may use Classic Audio, LE Audio, or both. The core number applies to the Bluetooth implementation; it does not, by itself, tell Windows which audio path, codec or profile is available.

Windows 11’s documented baseline

Microsoft Learn states that Windows 11 version 22H2, all editions, support Bluetooth Core Specification 5.3 in the operating system. The in-box documentation lists protocols and profiles including the Host Controller Interface (HCI), Attribute Protocol (ATT), Generic Access Profile (GAP), Generic Attribute Profile (GATT), Logical Link Control and Adaptation Protocol (L2CAP), Service Discovery Protocol (SDP) and Security Manager Protocol (SMP).

This is an operating-system baseline, not a guarantee that a particular laptop or desktop contains a 5.3 radio. The installed controller, its firmware and its Windows driver remain the limiting factors. A computer released with an older radio can continue to report that older capability even after Windows is updated.

How to check the Bluetooth version Windows actually sees

Use the Bluetooth radio entry, not the software enumerator entries, when checking the hardware. Microsoft’s examples include entries such as Intel Wireless Bluetooth and Realtek Bluetooth Adapter; “Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator” entries are Windows components and do not identify the radio’s core version.

  1. Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Bluetooth.
  3. Open the properties for the actual wireless radio. If several entries are present, choose the vendor-named adapter rather than an enumerator.
  4. Open the Advanced tab and locate the LMP value. Driver versions expose this field differently; if it is not shown, install the current driver supplied by the PC or radio manufacturer and check again.
  5. Interpret the value using Microsoft’s mapping: LMP 12 = Bluetooth Core 5.3; LMP 13 = Bluetooth Core 5.4.

Microsoft defines LMP as “the highest core specification that the Windows device fully supports.” This is more useful than inferring a version from a retailer’s adapter title. If the value is lower than 12, the PC is not reporting 5.3 or 5.4, even though Windows 11 itself supports the 5.3 baseline.

Why Bluetooth 5.4 does not automatically enable LE Audio

The LE Audio requirements on Windows

Microsoft Support says LE Audio on Windows 11 requires version 22H2 or newer, compatible Bluetooth LE support, a compatible audio codec, and manufacturer-provided LE Audio-capable drivers for both the Bluetooth LE radio and the audio codec. The headset or earbuds must also support LE Audio. Missing any one of these pieces can leave a 5.4 radio operating only with Classic Audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To check the Windows side, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and look for Use LE Audio when available. If that setting is absent, Microsoft says the device does not currently support LE Audio, possibly because of hardware or driver limitations. Installing a generic Bluetooth driver may not add the required audio path; the vendor-specific package is often essential.

What LC3 and Auracast depend on

LC3 is the codec used by LE Audio implementations, but the presence of an LC3 reference in a product description does not prove that Windows can use it. The controller, Windows audio stack, codec driver and headset must agree on the LE Audio connection. Auracast is likewise an LE Audio broadcast capability, not an automatic consequence of moving from Core 5.3 to Core 5.4.

Bluetooth SIG’s LE Audio FAQ says, “LE Audio relies on a new core feature introduced in version 5.2 of the Bluetooth Core Specification.” That feature is LE Isochronous Channels. Because the necessary core foundation arrived in 5.2, the difference between 5.3 and 5.4 alone cannot answer whether LE Audio will work.

Why the driver stack matters

Microsoft’s technical driver documentation describes a vendor-specific audio driver stack containing the Bluetooth LE Audio profile, a Bluetooth controller and the LC3 codec. It also notes that, as of Core 5.3, there was no standard host-controller interface for host platforms to send and receive isochronous data. That is why a controller with a suitable core version can still need a manufacturer-specific Windows audio path.

Bluetooth SIG advises consumers to ask the product manufacturer whether an existing device is upgradeable. Products can support Classic Audio and LE Audio together, but compatibility is product-specific. Do not infer either mode from a single version badge.

Bluetooth 5.3 versus 5.4 by decision area

Decision area What to verify Why the version badge is insufficient
Windows host Windows 11 22H2 or newer, the installed radio and its LMP value The operating system can support Core 5.3 while the physical radio is older, and a 5.4 radio still depends on its driver.
Bluetooth controller Vendor, firmware, LE capability and manufacturer driver package Controller firmware and driver determine which optional functions are exposed to Windows.
Audio application LE Audio setting, codec support and the audio driver path LC3 and LE Isochronous Channels require software support in addition to the core specification.
Accessory Headset or earbuds specification explicitly naming LE Audio, LC3 or the required broadcast function The accessory must support the same mode; a newer PC cannot add a missing headset feature.
Upgrade decision Whether the current radio is missing, unstable or lacks a verified requirement A newer number by itself is unlikely to create a visible improvement when the existing 5.3 connection already works.

Should you buy a Bluetooth 5.4 USB adapter?

When an adapter is sensible

  • The desktop has no Bluetooth hardware.
  • The built-in radio has poor reception, repeated disconnects or a damaged antenna.
  • The existing controller or driver does not expose a feature you have confirmed is supported by the headset.
  • You need to replace an old radio without changing the rest of the PC.

In these cases, a USB adapter can be a practical way to add or replace the radio. The adapter’s advertised core version is only the starting point. Check the chipset, supported Windows 11 driver, firmware-update method and an explicit LE Audio statement if LE Audio is your goal.

When it is probably unnecessary

If Device Manager reports LMP 12 (Core 5.3), the PC has stable connections, the LE Audio setting is available when needed, and your headset supports the desired mode, changing to a 5.4 dongle is unlikely to provide a meaningful improvement. No independent Windows test establishes a general range, latency, performance or battery advantage for 5.4 over 5.3.

Adapter buying checklist

  • Windows support: Confirm the listing names Windows 11 and identify whether a vendor driver is required.
  • Chipset: Prefer a listing that identifies the controller rather than one that gives only a Bluetooth version.
  • LE Audio claim: Look for explicit LE Audio and codec support; do not treat “5.4” as proof.
  • Driver source: Verify that the manufacturer supplies current radio and audio drivers, not only a generic inbox driver.
  • Physical placement: Use a USB extension cable if the computer case or nearby USB devices shield the radio; this changes reception, not the Bluetooth core version.
  • Coexistence: If the PC already has an internal radio, disable or remove the old adapter as directed by the manufacturer so Windows does not keep selecting the wrong device.

How to install and validate a USB adapter

  1. Record the current radio name, driver version and LMP value in Device Manager. This gives you a rollback reference.
  2. Download the Windows 11 driver from the adapter manufacturer’s support page before unplugging or disabling the existing radio. Follow the vendor’s installation order if it specifies one.
  3. Insert the adapter directly into the PC or through a short extension cable. Wait for Windows to enumerate it, then install the supplied driver if Windows did not do so automatically.
  4. In Device Manager, confirm that the new vendor-named radio appears under Bluetooth without a warning icon. Do not use the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator entry to identify the adapter.
  5. Recheck the radio’s Advanced properties for the LMP value. LMP 13 indicates that Windows sees Core 5.4; a product label alone does not.
  6. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices and check for Use LE Audio when available if LE Audio is required.
  7. Pair the headset or earbuds again. In Windows sound settings, select the LE Audio device or codec option only when both the PC and accessory expose it.
  8. Test a call and media playback separately. Some products support LE Audio for media but use a different path for communications, and a successful pairing does not prove every profile works.

Troubleshooting common 5.4 and 5.3 misunderstandings

“My adapter says 5.4, but the LE Audio switch is missing.”

Check Windows 11 version, the LMP value, the adapter’s exact chipset and the manufacturer’s radio and audio drivers. Microsoft says the missing switch can indicate hardware or driver limitations. Confirm that the headset supports LE Audio; the PC cannot enable it unilaterally.

“Windows shows 5.3, so my headset cannot use LE Audio.”

That conclusion is too broad. Bluetooth SIG places the LE Isochronous Channels foundation in Core 5.2, so 5.3 can be sufficient at the core level. You still need the Windows LE Audio driver stack, a compatible codec and an LE Audio-capable accessory.

“The accessory pairs, but audio uses the old mode.”

Pairing proves that a compatible Bluetooth connection exists, not that LE Audio was selected. Check the Windows LE Audio setting, install the manufacturer’s driver package, and inspect the accessory specification for separate Classic Audio and LE Audio support.

“The new dongle is not faster or farther.”

No authoritative source in this comparison establishes a universal range, latency or speed gain for Core 5.4 over 5.3 on Windows PCs. Antenna placement, radio interference, firmware, driver quality and the accessory often dominate practical results.

“Two Bluetooth entries appear in Device Manager.”

Identify the vendor-named radio and ignore the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator entries for version checking. If two physical radios remain enabled, Windows may use the one you did not intend; disable the old adapter only after confirming that the new driver is installed and working.

A desktop with no built-in Bluetooth

A USB adapter is a reasonable addition. Choose one with an identified chipset, Windows 11 driver support and an explicit LE Audio claim if that feature matters. After installation, verify the LMP value and Windows setting instead of relying on the packaging.

A PC with LMP 13 but a Classic-only headset

The host reports Core 5.4, but the accessory remains the limiting component. A 5.4 controller cannot add LE Audio, LC3 or Auracast to a headset that does not implement those functions.

A PC whose radio has repeated dropouts

Update the manufacturer’s Bluetooth and wireless drivers first, check antenna placement and remove conflicting radios. If the problem persists, replacing the radio can be justified for reliability; the reason is the failing implementation, not the version number alone.

What changed in Bluetooth Core 5.4, and what did not

Bluetooth SIG’s record dates the Core 5.4 amendment to June 11, 2024, with an effective date of July 1, 2024. This establishes when the specification revision took effect. It does not establish that all 5.4 features are implemented in Windows 11, in every controller sold as 5.4, or in every driver package.

Microsoft’s Windows documentation remains the relevant implementation reference for a Windows PC: version 22H2 has an in-box Core 5.3 baseline, while the radio’s LMP value reveals the highest core specification Windows says that device fully supports. The feature a reader experiences is the intersection of that host support, the application and driver stack, and the accessory’s declared capabilities.

A reliable buying rule

Use this order when deciding whether to upgrade:

  1. Define the required function—basic Classic Audio, LE Audio, LC3, broadcast audio or simply a reliable connection.
  2. Check the current radio in Device Manager and record its LMP value.
  3. Check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices for the LE Audio switch when relevant.
  4. Read the headset or earbuds specification for the same function; verify with the manufacturer if upgradeability is unclear.
  5. Only then compare USB adapters, prioritizing chipset, driver and explicit feature support over the 5.4 badge.

That process avoids the most common mistake: treating a Bluetooth Core number as a complete compatibility specification. On Windows 11, a well-supported 5.3 radio can be a better practical choice than a nominally newer 5.4 adapter with incomplete drivers.
