Choose Threads if potential reach and Meta’s adjacent audience are your priority; choose Bluesky if selectable feeds and protocol-level portability matter most; choose Mastodon if you want to join a community run by an independently operated server with its own rules. The practical way to decide is to compare five things: audience and discovery, feed control, moderation, account portability, and the communities you want to reach.
Quick answer: which platform fits which priority?
| Your priority | Best-supported fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Potential reach and discovery beyond the app | Threads | Meta reported 500 million monthly active users in June 2026 and says eligible Threads posts may be recommended on Instagram and Facebook. That creates opportunity, not a guarantee of reach for an individual account. |
| Choosing among many algorithms and moving hosting later | Bluesky | Bluesky describes more than 40,000 selectable feeds and says an account can change hosting while retaining its username, friends, and posts. |
| Joining a community with local governance | Mastodon | You choose a server operated by an independent person or organization. Its rules and moderation apply locally, while you can still follow people on other servers. |
| Built-in audience and creator measurements | Threads | Meta documents Insights for views, interactions, follower demographics and geography, plus discovery sources. The interface and availability can change. |
| Predictable account migration | Bluesky, with qualifications | Bluesky’s portability description is broader than Mastodon’s migration process. Mastodon can transfer followers where supported, but posts do not move and other data needs export and import. |
These are reasoned fits from each service’s documented design, not results from an independent head-to-head study. None of the three can promise that you will get the largest audience, safest experience or highest engagement.

How the three networks are built differently
Bluesky: one identity layer with selectable experiences
Bluesky is built around the AT Protocol, which it describes as an open-source framework for social apps that standardizes identity, follows and data. In practical terms, your account is not meant to be permanently tied to one hosting provider. Bluesky says you can move hosting while retaining your username, friends and posts. It also separates the choice of algorithm from the service hosting your account: users can select feeds made by different providers rather than relying on one mandatory timeline.
That does not mean every AT Protocol app has identical features or that moving an account is consequence-free. It means the protocol is designed to make identity and social data more portable than a conventional, single-provider account. Moderation services, labels and user controls can be layered on top of the protocol.

Mastodon: a federation of independently run servers
Mastodon is a federated network rather than one centrally operated website. At sign-up, you select a server (sometimes called an instance) run by an individual, nonprofit, company or other organization. The server determines its own rules, moderation practices and local culture. You can follow people on other participating servers, so the initial server choice does not confine you to one community.
This arrangement gives you a meaningful governance choice, but it also makes the sign-up decision more consequential. Read a server’s rules, moderation policy and code of conduct before posting. A server can suspend or close accounts under its own policy, even though your contacts may be spread across the wider network.
Threads: a Meta app designed for large-scale discovery
Threads is Meta’s text-focused social app. Its discovery advantage comes from being part of Meta’s wider ecosystem: Meta says eligible Threads posts may be recommended to people on Instagram and Facebook. Recommendation eligibility is not a promise that a post will be distributed, and the exact criteria can change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Threads combines a main feed with controls for custom feeds, topics and conversation settings. Meta has also introduced features such as follower-only replies, reply approvals, reply filters, quote-post controls and creator Insights. These are product features announced on specific dates, not permanent guarantees for every country or account.
Audience size: useful context, not a league table
The published totals below use different definitions and measurement methods. Threads’ figure is monthly active users; Bluesky’s FAQ gives a user total without calling it monthly active; Mastodon’s number is a directory estimate based on a crawl of accessible servers. Comparing them as market share would be misleading.

| Network | Published figure | Definition and date | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Threads | 500 million | Monthly active users, reported by Meta on June 16, 2026 | Meta announcement |
| Bluesky | More than 44 million | Users as of May 2026; Bluesky does not label this as monthly active users | Bluesky FAQ |

Use these numbers to understand the scale and likely density of conversations, not to predict your personal results. A specialist community on a smaller network can be more valuable to you than a much larger general audience.
Feeds and discovery: who decides what you see?
Bluesky’s selectable feeds
Bluesky’s FAQ says the service has more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds. You can subscribe to feeds built around topics, posting patterns or other rules, then switch among them instead of accepting a single ranking system. Following a person and subscribing to a feed are separate actions, so a feed can surface accounts you do not already follow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThis is useful when you want to tune discovery yourself or maintain different views for work, hobbies and breaking news. It also requires active curation: feed quality varies, and a feed’s operator can change its behavior.
Mastodon’s home and local timelines
Mastodon’s official description emphasizes a home feed of posts from accounts you follow, including accounts on other servers. Server software can also expose local or federated discovery views, but their contents depend on the server and its connections. The result is usually more relationship-driven than recommendation-driven: you discover people through follows, hashtags, replies and server communities rather than one universal algorithm.
Threads’ custom feeds and topic discovery
Meta documents custom feeds and topic discovery alongside controls for replies and quote posts. In March 2025, it described feed personalization features that let users shape what appears in their experience. In June 2026, Meta said Threads communities had graduated from beta and that its Your Algo feature was rolling out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand at that announcement. In February 2026, Meta described Dear Algo, which lets a user request more or less of selected topics for three days; it was announced for the United States, New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Mastodon’s server-level governance
On Mastodon, the server operator sets local rules and enforces them. Two servers can have different policies about harassment, political content, sensitive media or federation with other servers. You should therefore evaluate the specific server rather than treating “Mastodon moderation” as one uniform standard. The directory lets you inspect servers before joining, but policies can still evolve after you sign up.
Mastodon’s February 2026 technical-direction post states: “Mastodon won’t ever harvest your data or chase engagement metrics.” That is Mastodon’s stated product position in that post, not an independent audit finding. The same post discusses planned work on sign-up, server choice, discovery, administration tools and creator profiles; planned direction should not be read as proof that every item is available now. Read the post at Mastodon’s technical-direction announcement.
Bluesky’s layered moderation
Bluesky describes moderation services, labels and user controls that are not tied to one server. Its 2025 transparency report says it operated moderation around the clock during 2025, with human oversight for appeals and edge cases. The report also says daily reports of anti-social behavior fell by approximately 79% after an experiment reduced the visibility of certain toxic, spammy, off-topic or bad-faith replies. That is Bluesky’s own reported result from its own experiment; it is not a comparable safety measurement across all three networks.
Threads’ conversation controls
Meta has documented follower-only replies, reply approvals, reply filters and quote-post controls. These can reduce unwanted interaction on an individual post or account. They are user-level controls within a centrally operated app, so they differ from Mastodon’s server governance and Bluesky’s protocol-plus-service approach.

Account portability and what happens when you leave
Bluesky’s hosting move
Bluesky says you can change hosting providers without losing your username, friends or posts. This is the clearest portability promise of the three services in the supplied documentation. Before moving, still check the destination provider’s terms and technical support: protocol-level portability does not guarantee that every third-party application presents data identically or that every moderation label follows you in the same way.
Mastodon’s migration process
Mastodon supports account moves, but its documentation sets strict limits. A move can transfer followers when the destination and relevant software support the required activity. Posts do not transfer. Follows, blocks, mutes and bookmarks may require separate export and import, and other settings can need manual recreation.
- Choose the destination server first. Review its rules, moderation policy, reliability information and community focus.
- Create the new account. Confirm the username and profile details before starting the move.
- Export data from the old account. Save lists and other exportable information that you want to recreate.
- Start the move from the account settings. Follow Mastodon’s current migration instructions and add the required redirect or alias information.
- Import what does not transfer automatically. Recreate follows, blocks, mutes and bookmarks from your exports where supported.
- Archive the old account’s posts yourself. They will not appear as posts on the new account after migration.
Read the current details in Mastodon’s moving-or-leaving documentation before you begin. Migration support can depend on the software used by the servers involved.
Threads’ account relationship to Meta
Threads is a Meta app rather than a federation of independently selected hosts. Its portability model is therefore not equivalent to Bluesky’s hosting move or Mastodon’s server migration. If retaining a cross-provider identity is a deciding factor, treat Threads as the least aligned with that requirement and verify the current account and data-export options in the app.

Threads: the most explicit built-in measurement
Meta’s creator Insights documentation covers views, interactions, follower demographics and geography, and discovery sources. That makes Threads the most clearly documented choice here for creators who want native audience breakdowns. Meta also says eligible posts can be recommended on Instagram and Facebook, which may expose a post to people who do not yet follow you on Threads. Eligibility and distribution are controlled by Meta and are not guaranteed.
Best Value
Bluesky: composable feeds and protocol flexibility
Bluesky’s creator advantage is control over how content is discovered rather than a single analytics dashboard described in the supplied material. You can publish into an ecosystem of selectable feeds and use protocol-based identity. If you need detailed demographic reporting or conversion tracking, confirm the current first-party and third-party options before choosing it as your primary business channel.
Mastodon: community reach over centralized analytics
Mastodon is suited to creators who value a specific community and direct relationships across servers. Server choice and federation can put your work in front of interested groups, but the supplied documentation does not establish a network-wide, standardized creator analytics product. Do not assume that metrics from one server represent the whole network.
A practical decision framework
Score each platform against your own priorities rather than using follower totals as a proxy for fit. Give each category a weight from 1 (minor) to 5 (critical), then rate each network from 1 (poor fit) to 5 (strong fit). Multiply the weight by the rating and compare the totals.

| Category | Questions to ask | What a high score means |
|---|---|---|
| Audience and discovery | Do you need the largest possible pool, cross-app recommendations or a specialist community? | Threads for potential scale; Mastodon for a chosen community; Bluesky for feed-based discovery. |
| Feed control | Do you want one relationship feed, many algorithms or Meta’s personalization controls? | Bluesky for selectable feeds; Mastodon for follow-based timelines; Threads for custom and topic controls. |
| Governance | Do you want local server rules, layered services or one central operator? | Mastodon for server choice; Bluesky for protocol-level services; Threads for centralized controls. |
| Portability | Could you need to move hosting without rebuilding your identity? | Bluesky’s documented hosting move is the broadest; Mastodon is movable with post and data limits. |
| Measurement | Do you need native views, demographics and discovery reports? | Threads, based on Meta’s documented Insights features. |
| Community fit | Where are the people you actually need to talk with? | The platform where your target colleagues, readers or friends already participate. |
How to start on each network without locking yourself in
If you choose Threads
- Set up your profile and clarify the audience you want to reach.
- Use custom feeds and topic discovery to find relevant conversations rather than relying only on the default feed.
- Review reply approvals, follower-only replies, reply filters and quote-post settings before publishing widely.
- Open Insights regularly and record views, interactions, follower geography and discovery sources.
- Test whether your eligible posts are being recommended outside Threads, but treat any resulting reach as variable rather than guaranteed.
If you choose Bluesky
- Create your account and select a stable handle that you can maintain if you later change hosting.
- Follow people in your field, then browse the feed directory for several algorithmic feeds instead of accepting only the default view.
- Subscribe to feeds that serve different purposes, such as professional news, local conversation and a hobby.
- Configure moderation services, labels and user controls before joining high-volume discussions.
- Keep a record of your account details and the hosting provider so a future move is deliberate rather than an emergency.
If you choose Mastodon
- Use the official server directory to shortlist communities whose rules, language, topic and moderation approach suit you.
- Read the server’s code of conduct and moderation information before creating an account.
- Complete your profile and follow accounts both on your server and across the federation.
- Use hashtags, replies and server discovery to find people; do not expect every server to expose the same local or federated views.
- Export important account data periodically so a future move does not depend on memory or a single server remaining available.
Should you use more than one?
A multi-network approach is sensible when your audiences are genuinely different. For example, you might use Threads for broad discovery and Insights, Bluesky for feed experimentation and protocol portability, and Mastodon for a focused community. The cost is operational: each account needs its own moderation settings, posting cadence and replies.
Do not automatically duplicate every post. Rewrite the opening line for the norms of each network, check links and images, and keep a simple record of which audience saw which version. A social media content calendar or social publishing tools can help with planning, but choose one only after confirming that it supports the networks, moderation workflow and analytics you actually need. No provider or integration is implied here.
Common mistakes when comparing the three
- Treating audience figures as equivalent. Monthly active users, total users and a server-directory crawl measure different things.
- Assuming one Mastodon server represents all of Mastodon. Rules and culture are local to each operator.
- Calling every portability feature “migration.” Bluesky describes retaining username, friends and posts when changing hosting; Mastodon’s documented move does not transfer posts.
- Reading rollout announcements as permanent availability. Threads features such as Your Algo and Dear Algo were announced for specific countries and dates.
- Using one platform’s moderation result as a universal safety score. Bluesky’s approximately 79% reduction was its own reported outcome from a specific reply-visibility experiment.
- Choosing by headline reach alone. The best network is the one where the people and governance model you need are actually present.
Bottom line
Pick Threads for the strongest documented combination of scale, cross-app discovery potential and native creator metrics. Pick Bluesky for selectable feeds and the clearest documented path to moving your identity and data between hosts. Pick Mastodon when choosing a server’s community and local governance matters more than a single central feed or standardized analytics. If two priorities conflict, start with the platform that serves your most important audience, keep your profile information backed up, and reassess after you have real conversations rather than relying on headline user totals.
