Bluesky’s blue checkmark is a visual verification badge for accounts the platform considers authentic and notable. Bluesky introduced the badge on April 21, 2025, alongside a second route in which approved organizations called Trusted Verifiers can verify people in their communities. A blue badge is separate from a custom domain handle, which shows that an account controls a website domain.
What does a blue checkmark on Bluesky mean?
A standard blue badge means Bluesky has verified the account. The company said it would proactively verify authentic and notable accounts; it also accepts applications from interested accounts, but does not publish a complete eligibility rubric or a guaranteed review time. Approval is not assured. Bluesky’s announcement described the badge as a user-friendly, recognizable verification layer.

The badge is a signal that an account has been verified through Bluesky’s system. It should not be read as a guarantee that every post is true or that the account’s views represent Bluesky’s.

Trusted Verifiers
Bluesky also approves selected independent organizations as Trusted Verifiers. They can verify people in their organizations or communities; for example, Bluesky said The New York Times could verify its journalists. These organizations receive a scalloped badge, and the accounts they verify display a verification badge. Tap a verified account’s badge to see which organization granted it. Bluesky says it reviews Trusted Verifier approvals for authenticity.
Organizations interested in becoming Trusted Verifiers can apply through Bluesky’s verification form. The published announcement does not guarantee that an organization will be accepted.

How do you apply for a Bluesky blue badge?
- Open Bluesky’s verification announcement and follow its verification-form link.
- Submit an application if you represent an authentic, notable account interested in a badge. The announcement does not provide a full eligibility checklist or a decision timeline.
- Wait for Bluesky’s review. Applying does not guarantee that the account will receive a badge.
For an organization seeking to verify people, the relevant route is to apply to become a Trusted Verifier, rather than to request a standard badge for each member.
Blue badge vs. custom domain handle
A custom domain handle and a blue badge serve different purposes. A custom handle replaces the default .bsky.social name with a website domain. Verifying it requires control of that domain; it is not an application for a blue badge and does not by itself establish Bluesky’s assessment of an account’s notability.

| Feature | Blue verification badge | Custom domain handle |
|---|---|---|
| What it signals | Verification by Bluesky or an approved Trusted Verifier | Control of the website domain used as the handle |
| Who grants or confirms it | Bluesky, or a Trusted Verifier whose grant Bluesky reviews | The account holder verifies domain control through DNS |
| What changes on the profile | A badge appears beside the name | The handle changes from the default .bsky.social format to the domain |

To set a domain handle, Bluesky’s tutorial instructs users to add a DNS TXT record named _atproto containing did=did:plc:[your value here]. After DNS propagates, select “Verify DNS Record.” This confirms domain control and changes the handle; it is separate from the badge system.
Can you hide Bluesky verification badges?
Yes. Go to Settings > Moderation > Verification Settings to hide badge display. This changes what you see; Bluesky’s announcement does not say that hiding badges revokes anyone’s verification.

How widely is verification used?
Bluesky reported more than 270,000 accounts had linked their username to a website by April 21, 2025. That figure concerns website-linked usernames, not blue badges. In its 2026 transparency report, Bluesky counted 4,327 verified accounts as of December 31, 2025: 3,567 verified directly by Bluesky and 777 through 21 Trusted Verifiers. The same report says 18 organizations were granted Trusted Verification during 2025 and more than 309,000 accounts used domain-handle verification by year-end. These are dated counts and may have changed since the report. Bluesky’s transparency report provides the platform’s figures.
