Review the replacement warning, select Go Live, then verify the live site. Promotion swaps the two environments: the staging version becomes production, and the previous production version becomes staging.
Promote the staging site to production
- Preview and test your changes in the staging environment.
- Log in to the Bluehost Portal and select Websites.
- Click Manage Site beside the website you intend to update.
- Open the Staging tab.
- In the Staging Sites section, click Promote.
- Read the confirmation warning. It states that staging will replace production.
- Click Go Live and wait for the promotion to finish.
- Visit the production site and check its important pages and functions.
Bluehost’s promotion guide describes the process as an environment swap, not just a file-only deployment. It gives no duration estimate. Bluehost says availability is not interrupted while updates are in progress, but this is not an independently measured uptime guarantee.

What changes when you promote
The staged version replaces the current production version. The previous production site moves into staging, where it can be promoted again if you decide to return to it. Bluehost documents this swap and re-promotion behavior; it is not a substitute for keeping a separate backup.

Staging and production may behave differently. Bluehost warns that larger sites and extensive database clones can have data-integrity or performance issues, and that differences between environments can affect testing. Its staging guide also notes that Jetpack is automatically put into offline mode on staging and some Jetpack features are disabled there. A staging test may therefore not exercise every Jetpack-backed feature as it works on the live site.

Checks to make before going live
- Confirm that you selected the correct website and staging environment; the action replaces production.
- Preview the staged site and test the features that matter. If the site takes orders, test the relevant e-commerce flows.
- Consider making a backup before major modifications. Bluehost’s staging management guidance recommends this; the promotion guide does not say that clicking Promote creates a backup automatically.
- Check whether the installation is WordPress Multisite. Bluehost says staging is disabled on Agency Multisite: you cannot create a new staging site, and an existing one cannot be promoted after Multisite is active. See its Multisite guidance.
If promotion fails or the live site has problems
If the promotion control or process fails, Bluehost recommends checking for conflicts from recently added plugins or themes, clearing staging and browser caches, and checking server configuration, including available storage and file permissions. If the problem persists, recreate the staging site; if those steps do not resolve it, contact Bluehost Support.
If promotion completes but the site behaves unexpectedly, check the live site itself and the specific features affected. A staging test may not cover every production behavior, particularly where environment differences or staging-only service modes are involved. The previous production version should now be in staging and can be promoted again according to Bluehost’s documented swap process.
