In an October 8, 2026 Semafor interview, co-CEOs Marc Lipschultz and Doug Ostrover rejected taking the alternative-asset manager private and predicted strong results. Yet a report published October 17 said OWL remained about 67% below its January 2025 record high. The market is still focused on private-credit liquidity, slower growth, insider leverage and the company’s weaker performance than the S&P 500.
What Blue Owl’s founders promised
Lipschultz told Semafor, “We went public for a reason and that reason stands.” He added, “Public shareholders are going to benefit from the rise in this stock.” Ostrover said, “We’re looking out the next 18 months and we think we’re going to put up fantastic results.”

Those statements are forecasts, not realized returns or new financial guidance. They did not include a revised earnings target, a new redemption figure, a balance-sheet action or other measurable change that would immediately alter valuation models.

Management made a similar argument in Blue Owl’s October 30, 2025 earnings transcript. Lipschultz said the company was focused on “executing, executing, executing” and suggested investors buying then could become “the beneficiaries of the upside from here, which we think of as substantial.” The subsequent share-price decline has made that earlier optimism harder for investors to credit.

Why the stock has not responded
Private-credit confidence has been damaged
Semafor reported that investors were seeking their money back from Blue Owl and comparable firms while the underlying loans could not be sold quickly. When a fund’s assets are illiquid, managers may restrict or delay redemptions rather than sell loans at distressed prices. The same report said regulators and investors had raised questions about loan quality.
That combination creates a trust problem. Even if borrowers continue paying, shareholders must assess whether reported asset values can be realized, how quickly capital can leave funds and whether future fundraising will slow. A verbal assurance about long-term results does not resolve those questions.

The market is pricing slower growth
The approximately 67% fall from the January 2025 peak indicates a valuation reset, not merely a short-lived reaction to one news item. Investors are no longer paying the same premium for Blue Owl’s earlier high-growth profile and are modeling slower revenue expansion. A business can continue generating fees while its stock falls if the expected growth rate, fee-related earnings or valuation multiple declines.

Share pledges add an overhang
Bloomberg reported on February 9, 2026, that Ostrover and Lipschultz had pledged more than half of their Blue Owl stakes as collateral for loans. Bloomberg said the collateral value had fallen by $260 million as OWL shares lost 16% in 2026 through that point.

A pledge is not the same as a sale, and no forced sale was reported. But if share prices fall far enough, lenders can demand additional collateral or sell pledged shares. That possibility can increase volatility and create extra supply precisely when other investors are already cautious.
Blue Owl has lagged its benchmark
Blue Owl’s 2025 Form 10-K performance graph, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in 2026, shows that $100 invested on December 31, 2020 became $156 on December 31, 2025. Over the same period, $100 invested in the S&P 500 became $196.

The filing cautions that this performance graph is not indicative of future performance. It does, however, show why investors may require proof of improvement rather than rely on management’s confidence.
What the operating business looks like
Ostrover said in the October 8, 2026 Semafor transcript that about 98% of Blue Owl’s revenue comes from management fees. The company presents that mix as a source of predictable, recurring cash flow because fees are generally tied to assets under management or committed capital rather than one-time trading gains.
Lipschultz said direct lending represents about one-third of the business and that real assets are its fastest-growing area. Blue Owl’s management also reported high-teen internal rates of return across Digital Infrastructure Funds I, II and III and an addressable pipeline exceeding $100 billion in its third-quarter 2025 transcript. These are company-reported figures and targets; they are not guarantees for public shareholders.
The fee-heavy model can support earnings through a difficult lending cycle, but it does not eliminate asset-quality or liquidity risk. If investors withdraw capital, fundraising slows or asset values are marked down, management fees and future fee-related earnings can still come under pressure.
Value trap or rebound candidate?
The answer depends on which unresolved variables improve first. A low share price alone does not establish value, while a strong franchise and recurring fees do not guarantee a rebound.

What shareholders should monitor next
- Redemption disclosures: Check whether investor withdrawal requests, gates or other liquidity controls are rising or easing.
- Fee-related earnings: Separate recurring management-fee growth from performance fees and asset-sale gains.
- Fundraising and deployment: Look for evidence that the stated digital-infrastructure and real-assets pipeline is becoming fee-paying capital.
- Credit quality: Review nonaccruals, defaults, amendments and valuation marks rather than relying only on headline internal rates of return.
- Insider collateral: Read future filings for changes in pledged shares, borrowing arrangements or any lender-driven disposition.
- Valuation assumptions: Test whether the share price already assumes a recovery in growth, or merely reflects a lower multiple on stable fees.
What the founders’ promise means for investors
The October interview confirms that Blue Owl’s leaders remain committed to the public-company structure and expect better results over the next 18 months. It does not, by itself, settle the private-credit liquidity questions, reverse the growth slowdown, remove the pledged-share risk or close the performance gap with the S&P 500.
Until operating results provide that evidence, the market’s lack of reaction is rational: investors are waiting for measurable improvement in redemptions, credit performance, fee earnings and capital formation. OWL could become a rebound candidate if those indicators turn, but the available record still leaves a credible value-trap scenario.
