The right comparison depends on whether you prioritize breadth, retirement-services integration, or concentrated exposure to private-market lending and related strategies. This is a business-model comparison, not a stock recommendation.
What these three firms are
Blue Owl Capital, Blackstone and Apollo Global Management are publicly traded alternative asset managers. They raise capital from institutions and other investors, invest through private-market vehicles and earn management fees, performance-related revenues and, in some structures, investment income. Their reported assets under management (AUM) are not calculated on an identical basis, so the headline totals are useful for scale but cannot be treated as a perfectly comparable league table.

Each firm also has a different operating design. Blue Owl was formed in May 2021 through the combination of Owl Rock and Dyal Capital. Apollo, founded in 1990, combines alternative asset management with a retirement-services business. Blackstone operates the broadest set of major alternative-investing businesses among the three.

That distinction matters for both investors and clients. A large AUM number can result from permanent vehicles, insurance accounts, advisory mandates or assets that carry different fee rates. It does not, by itself, show how much cash earnings the manager receives, how liquid the underlying portfolio is, or how much of the balance sheet is exposed to market movements. The useful question is not simply “which company has more assets?” but “what kind of assets, capital and fees make up those assets?”

Scale at a glance (company-reported figures for December 31, 2025)
| Manager | Reported assets | How the figure is described | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Owl | $307.4 billion | Total AUM reported by Blue Owl Capital for December 31, 2025 | A large specialist platform with an emphasis on permanent-capital vehicles and long-dated private funds |
| Apollo | $392.2 billion | Managed or advised AUM reported by Apollo Global Management; $386.5 billion was fee-generating AUM in Athene-related accounts | A sizeable alternatives platform whose retirement-services relationships are central to its capital base |
| Blackstone | Approximately $1.3 trillion | Total AUM reported by Blackstone Inc. for December 31, 2025 | The largest scale and widest diversification of the three |
These numbers come from separate company filings and use different definitions and scopes. Apollo’s measure is explicitly “managed or advised” AUM, while Blue Owl and Blackstone use their own total-AUM definitions. A larger reported total therefore does not automatically mean higher fee-paying AUM, better margins or a better investment opportunity.
For a practical comparison, put the reporting date beside every number, copy the definition exactly, and distinguish total AUM from fee-paying AUM. Also note whether an amount is managed directly, advised for another owner, or associated with an insurance account. Mixing those categories can make a platform look more or less economically powerful than it is.
How the platforms are organized
Blue Owl: three focused platforms
Blue Owl operates across Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital. Its filing emphasizes permanent-capital vehicles and long-dated private funds. Those structures can support more predictable management-fee streams because capital may remain invested for longer than in a traditional finite-life fund, although the product design also creates its own liquidity and investor-suitability considerations.
The platform’s identity is closely associated with private credit and with providing capital to other private-equity managers through GP strategic capital. Real assets adds a second specialist area, but the overall mix remains narrower than the businesses operated by Blackstone or Apollo.
That concentration can be an advantage when fundraising demand is strong in private lending or GP financing. It can also make the company’s results more sensitive to credit spreads, defaults, refinancing conditions, private-equity activity and the appetite of investors for the particular vehicles Blue Owl offers. An analyst should therefore track each platform’s fee-paying assets and fundraising rather than assume that total AUM growth is evenly distributed among Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital.
Apollo: asset management plus retirement services
Apollo reports three segments: Asset Management, Retirement Services and Principal Investing. Its retirement-services platform includes capital associated with Athene-related accounts. This structure links alternative investing with long-duration retirement liabilities and gives Apollo a business model that is different from a standalone fund manager.
Apollo identifies Fee Related Earnings (FRE) as the primary performance measure for its Asset Management segment. FRE is intended to focus attention on recurring earnings from the asset-management operation rather than on the more volatile results that can come from realizations, incentive income or principal investments.
The retirement-services connection is more than a label. It means an Apollo analysis should examine the sources and duration of insurance-related capital, the economics of managing or advising those assets, and the performance of the retirement-services segment alongside Asset Management. Principal Investing can add another source of gains or losses that does not behave like contractual management fees. A quarter with strong principal results should not automatically be interpreted as a permanent improvement in recurring asset-management earnings.
Blackstone: four broad segments
Blackstone reports Real Estate, Private Equity, Credit & Insurance, and Multi-Asset Investing. At December 31, 2025, the reported segment AUM was:
| Blackstone segment | Segment AUM |
|---|---|
| Real Estate | $319.3 billion |
| Private Equity | $416.4 billion |
| Credit & Insurance | $443.0 billion |
| Multi-Asset Investing | $96.2 billion |
The four-segment model gives Blackstone multiple fundraising channels and exposure to different market cycles. It also makes the company less of a single-strategy expression than Blue Owl, while avoiding Apollo’s specific combination of asset management and a retirement-services operating segment.

Blackstone’s breadth can help one strategy offset a slower fundraising period in another, but diversification makes attribution harder. An investor interested in real estate, for example, must still account for the contribution of private equity, credit, insurance and multi-asset businesses to consolidated earnings. Segment-level AUM and fee disclosures are therefore more informative than the headline total alone.

If “strongest” means the most concentrated corporate identity around private credit, Blue Owl is the clearest answer among these three. Credit is one of its three named platforms, and the company highlights permanent-capital and long-dated vehicles that can support private-lending strategies.
That is not the same as proving that Blue Owl has the largest private-credit AUM. The available filings do not provide a directly comparable private-credit total for all three managers. Blackstone’s Credit & Insurance segment is very large in absolute terms, and Apollo has substantial credit exposure within Asset Management and through retirement-services capital. Their segment labels, mandates and AUM definitions differ, so a precise ranking of private-credit assets would require additional, consistently defined disclosures.
There are several ways to test a private-credit thesis. Review the share of fee-paying AUM tied to credit, the mix of senior versus subordinated or opportunistic lending if disclosed, fundraising by product, realized losses and non-accrual trends, and the duration of the capital supporting the loans. None of those details can be inferred from a company’s total AUM or ticker symbol. Private-credit exposure can also carry different economics when it sits in an insurance account, a perpetual vehicle or a traditional closed-end fund.
Capital permanence and liquidity
Traditional closed-end private funds generally raise money for a specified term and return capital as investments are sold. Permanent-capital vehicles and long-dated funds can keep assets under management for longer, potentially making fee revenue less dependent on launching a replacement fund every few years.
Blue Owl places particular emphasis on these structures. Apollo’s retirement-services business also brings long-duration capital into the platform, while Blackstone uses a wide range of products across its segments. Permanence can improve revenue visibility, but it does not eliminate risk: investors still need to understand redemption terms, valuation practices, leverage, lockups and the liquidity promised by each specific vehicle.
For any perpetual or long-dated product, read the governing documents for notice periods, gates, suspension rights, valuation frequency and the circumstances in which withdrawals can be limited. A vehicle may offer periodic dealing while holding assets that cannot be sold quickly at a reliable price. That mismatch is a product-structure issue, not a simple judgment about whether permanent capital is good or bad. It also affects how quickly a manager can realize performance income and recycle capital into new investments.
Recurring fee economics and earnings quality
Blackstone’s disclosed fee base
For 2025, Blackstone reported $8.016 billion of total management and advisory fees, net, and $1.825 billion of fee-related performance revenues. The first figure reflects recurring or contractual management and advisory economics; the second is a separate category that can vary with product structures and performance. They should not be combined into a single “guaranteed” earnings number.
When reviewing Blackstone, compare management and advisory fees with fee-paying AUM, fundraising and the mix of products generating those fees. Then analyze fee-related performance revenues separately. Their growth may signal successful products or realizations, but their timing and repeatability can differ from base management fees. Net figures also reflect the company’s presentation of expenses and offsets, so an analyst should use the same basis across periods.
Apollo’s FRE framework
Apollo’s use of FRE as the primary Asset Management performance measure gives analysts a framework for separating recurring fee-related earnings from more variable items. When comparing Apollo with another manager, check whether the other company reports an equivalent measure, which expenses are included and how performance-related revenues are classified.

FRE is most useful as a trend and quality measure, not as a substitute for every earnings line. Pair it with fee-paying AUM growth, fundraising, realizations, incentive income, retirement-services results and principal-investing gains or losses. A rising FRE number supported by durable fee-paying assets is different from a period in which consolidated profit rises mainly because of an investment mark or realization.
Blue Owl’s fee-paying AUM emphasis
Blue Owl highlights fee-paying AUM and the earnings stability associated with permanent capital. Its headline $307.4 billion is total AUM, not a disclosed fee-paying-AUM figure in the information available here. That distinction matters because some assets may carry lower fees, no fees, or different economics depending on the vehicle and mandate.
For Blue Owl, follow the conversion from total AUM to fee-paying AUM, the pace of permanent-capital fundraising and the fee rates attached to Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital. A platform can report strong total-AUM growth while receiving a smaller incremental fee contribution if new assets are lower-fee, advisory or otherwise structured differently. Conversely, modest AUM growth can produce better earnings if the mix shifts toward higher-fee products.

- Growth in fee-paying AUM, not only total AUM.
- Management-fee rates and the mix of products carrying those fees.
- Fundraising and net inflows, which indicate whether the platform is adding new capital.
- Realizations and incentive income, which can be lumpy and market-dependent.
- Investment income and principal-investing results, which may fluctuate more than contractual fees.
- Operating expenses, leverage and compensation, which determine how AUM growth converts into distributable earnings.
- Capital commitments and financing obligations connected with insurance, retirement or other balance-sheet activities.
- Whether reported metrics are gross or net of expenses, and whether the definition changed from the prior period.
Is Blue Owl simply a smaller Blackstone?
By reported AUM, Blue Owl is substantially smaller than Blackstone. But “smaller Blackstone” is an incomplete description. Blackstone spans four major segments and approximately $1.3 trillion of reported AUM, while Blue Owl is organized around three more focused platforms and relies heavily on private-credit, real-asset and GP-strategic-capital strategies.
Blue Owl can therefore be viewed as a specialist growth platform rather than a miniature version of a fully diversified alternatives conglomerate. Its narrower focus may provide clearer exposure to selected private-market themes, while Blackstone’s breadth can spread fundraising and investment activity across more categories. Neither characteristic is automatically superior; each changes the risks and opportunities an investor must evaluate.
The firms also differ in history and operating maturity. Blue Owl’s current combination dates to May 2021, whereas Apollo was founded in 1990 and Blackstone has developed a much larger multi-segment franchise. That does not determine future returns, but it helps explain why their product shelves, distribution networks, capital sources and reporting conventions are not interchangeable.
Which manager is “best” for a particular objective?
Choose the breadth leader
Blackstone is the natural reference point for investors who value the largest reported scale and exposure across real estate, private equity, credit and insurance, and multi-asset investing. The trade-off is that the company’s results reflect many businesses, so a view on one strategy may be diluted by the rest of the portfolio.

Choose the integrated retirement platform
Apollo is the distinctive choice for investors who want an alternatives manager whose model includes a major retirement-services operation. The combination can provide access to long-duration capital and creates a different earnings profile from a pure fee-based asset manager. It also means that retirement-services performance, regulatory requirements and capital-management decisions are important parts of the analysis.
Choose the focused private-markets platform
Blue Owl is the clearest fit for an investor seeking concentrated exposure to private credit, real assets and GP strategic capital, together with a business model built around permanent-capital vehicles and long-dated funds. Concentration can make the investment thesis easier to understand, but it can also increase sensitivity to conditions in the selected strategies.
Match the manager to the question
Someone asking “Which has the strongest private-credit identity?” may reach a different conclusion from someone asking “Which has the broadest alternative-investing franchise?” The first question points toward Blue Owl’s focused platform; the second points toward Blackstone’s scale. An investor evaluating retirement-linked capital will naturally place more weight on Apollo’s structure. Define the objective before selecting the metric, or the comparison will answer the wrong question.

How to compare OWL, BX and APO as public companies
Ticker symbols are only the starting point. A disciplined comparison should use the same period and definitions for each company, then separate operating performance from share-price valuation.

Record whether each figure is total AUM, fee-paying AUM, managed AUM or managed-or-advised AUM. Do not compare Apollo’s managed-or-advised total directly with another company’s total without noting the scope.
- Measure recurring earnings. Use Apollo’s FRE disclosure, Blackstone’s management and advisory fees, and Blue Owl’s fee-paying-AUM and permanent-capital disclosures. Read the reconciliation and expense definitions before treating any metric as equivalent.
- Examine fundraising and retention. Look for net inflows, new products, redemption behavior and the maturity schedule of long-dated or closed-end funds.
- Separate realizations from recurring fees. A strong quarter of asset sales or incentive income may not repeat. Identify how much earnings came from contractual fees versus performance and investment results.
- Assess capital and leverage. Review corporate debt, investment commitments, liquidity and any financing tied to insurance or retirement operations.
- Check valuation independently. Compare the share price with the earnings measure that best represents the business, and use current filings because market multiples change continuously. A high-quality platform can still be an unattractive purchase at an excessive valuation.
- Check the product-level economics. Determine who bears fund expenses, how management fees step down or differ by share class, and whether incentive allocations are subject to high-water marks, hurdles or realization conditions. These terms vary by vehicle and should not be inferred from a corporate headline.
- Run a downside case. Test what happens if fundraising slows, fee rates compress, private-market marks fall, exits are delayed or credit losses rise. The exercise is more informative than assuming that recent AUM growth continues indefinitely.
Risks that apply differently across the three
Fundraising and fee-rate pressure
Alternative managers need continuing commitments to replace maturing funds and expand fee-paying AUM. Competition, weaker private-market exits or lower fee rates can slow that process even when headline AUM remains high.
Realization and incentive volatility
Performance revenues depend on asset values and the timing of sales or other realizations. They can make reported earnings rise sharply in one period and fall in another.
Valuation and liquidity risk in private assets
Private assets do not trade continuously like listed securities. Valuations rely on models, appraisals and comparable transactions, and vehicles that offer periodic liquidity must manage the mismatch between investor withdrawals and less-liquid holdings.
Regulatory and structural risk
Permanent-capital products, insurance accounts and retail-accessible private-market vehicles can face different disclosure, suitability, capital and liquidity rules from traditional institutional funds. Changes in regulation may affect product economics or distribution.
Recommended Free Tools
Macro exposure
Interest rates, credit losses, property values, economic growth and public-market conditions can affect fundraising, portfolio marks, realizations and the cost of financing. The impact will not be uniform: a credit-heavy platform, a real-estate portfolio and a retirement-services balance sheet respond to different parts of the cycle.
Concentration and key-person risk
A focused platform may be easier to analyze but less diversified by strategy. A broad platform may spread risk but introduce more complex reporting and capital-allocation decisions. In either case, review investment-team continuity, distribution capacity and dependence on a limited number of flagship products.
A practical decision checklist
- Are you seeking diversified alternatives exposure or a more concentrated strategy?
- Do you prefer a platform with retirement-services capital, or a business focused primarily on asset management?
- How important is permanent or long-duration capital to your thesis?
- Are you comparing total AUM, fee-paying AUM and earnings on a like-for-like basis?
- Can you tolerate variable realization income and private-asset valuation uncertainty?
- Have you separated the quality of the operating platform from the current valuation of OWL, BX or APO shares?
- Have you read the liquidity, redemption and valuation terms of the specific products behind the AUM?
- Are management fees, fund expenses, incentive economics and corporate costs clearly separated in your model?
- What evidence would disprove your thesis: slower fundraising, lower fee-paying conversion, weaker realizations or higher credit losses?
Frequently asked questions
Is Blue Owl a smaller Blackstone?
Blue Owl is smaller by reported AUM, but it is not simply a scaled-down version of Blackstone. Blackstone has four broad segments and approximately $1.3 trillion of AUM; Blue Owl has three focused platforms centered on Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital.
Which company has the most AUM?
Blackstone reported approximately $1.3 trillion at December 31, 2025, compared with Apollo’s $392.2 billion of managed or advised AUM and Blue Owl’s $307.4 billion of AUM. The definitions differ, so these figures indicate scale rather than a precise ranking of fee economics.
Does Apollo’s $392.2 billion all generate fees?
No conclusion should be drawn from the headline alone. Apollo reported $392.2 billion of managed or advised AUM and separately identified $386.5 billion of fee-generating AUM in Athene-related accounts. Analysts should review the company’s definitions and reconciliations instead of assuming every dollar carries the same fee.
Best Value
Why is fee-paying AUM more useful than total AUM?
Fee-paying AUM is closer to the asset base that produces contractual management fees. Total AUM can include assets with lower fees, no fees, advisory economics or different mandates. The conversion between the two helps explain why similar AUM growth can produce different earnings growth.
Is permanent capital risk-free for the manager or investor?
No. Permanent or long-dated capital may make fee streams more durable, but the underlying assets can remain illiquid and valuations can be model-based. Investors must review redemption terms, lockups, leverage, valuation policies and any gates or suspension rights.
Which stock is the best buy: OWL, BX or APO?
The operating comparison does not answer a valuation question. Share prices, earnings multiples, leverage, fundraising expectations and macro conditions change over time. Compare each stock with the recurring earnings measure that best represents its business and use current filings before making an investment decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow should private-credit exposure be compared?
Start with strategy-specific, fee-paying AUM and fundraising, then examine portfolio quality, losses, liquidity and the type of capital funding the loans. Blue Owl has the clearest private-credit identity, but the available company figures do not establish a directly comparable private-credit AUM ranking across all three firms.
Bottom line
Blackstone leads on reported scale and platform breadth. Apollo stands out for integrating alternatives with retirement services and for explicitly using FRE to frame asset-management performance. Blue Owl is the focused specialist, with its strongest identity in private credit, real assets, GP strategic capital and permanent-capital structures.
There is no universal winner. Use Blackstone when breadth is the priority, Apollo when the alternatives-and-retirement model is central to the thesis, and Blue Owl when concentrated exposure to its three specialist platforms is what you want to study. In every case, verify the latest filing, normalize AUM and fee definitions, read product liquidity terms, and analyze valuation and risk separately from the operating story.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which alternative asset manager is biggest?

Which has the strongest private-credit exposure?
Blue Owl has the most concentrated private-credit identity because Credit is one of its three named platforms. Blackstone and Apollo also have substantial credit businesses, but the available figures do not provide a directly comparable private-credit AUM ranking.
What is the main difference between OWL, BX and APO?
Blue Owl is focused on Credit, Real Assets and GP Strategic Capital; Blackstone is diversified across Real Estate, Private Equity, Credit & Insurance and Multi-Asset Investing; Apollo combines Asset Management with Retirement Services and Principal Investing.
Why compare fee-paying AUM instead of only total AUM?
Fee-paying AUM is more closely linked to recurring management fees. Total AUM may include lower-fee, non-fee or advisory assets and therefore can overstate the earnings contribution of a platform.
Are these figures investment recommendations?
No. AUM and platform comparisons describe business models. A stock decision also requires current valuation, leverage, fundraising, realizations, regulation and macro analysis.
The Bottom Line
Blackstone is the scale and diversification leader, Apollo is the integrated alternatives-and-retirement platform, and Blue Owl is the focused private-credit, real-assets and GP-strategic-capital specialist. Compare definitions and recurring earnings before comparing tickers.
