Blue Origin says its planned lunar Power Tower, a solar array carried by the Blue Moon Mark 1 lander, is designed to provide more than 10 kilowatts for Moon Base operations near the lunar South Pole. The company has shown an Earth-based deployment test, not a tower operating on the Moon. Its stated height is also inconsistent across Blue Origin sources: 20 meters on the current lander page and in an October 2026 report, versus 26 meters total in a company LinkedIn post.
What is Blue Origin’s Power Tower?
It is a planned solar-power system that Blue Origin says will be mounted on its Blue Moon Mark 1 (MK1) lunar lander and deployed vertically on the lunar surface. The aim is to extend power from the lander to other surface equipment and support operations at a future Moon Base near the South Pole. Blue Origin’s Blue Moon MK1 page describes the system as part of the lander’s capabilities.

Space.com reported on October 4, 2026 that the concept appears related to Honeybee Robotics’ Lunar Array Mast and Power System (LAMPS), which was tested at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in 2024. That reported connection is not a detailed engineering confirmation that the systems are identical. Space.com’s report includes an animation of the proposed lunar deployment.
How much power is it designed to provide?
Blue Origin says the system is designed to provide more than 10 kilowatts of electrical power for Moon Base operations. That is a stated design capability, not a measurement from a working lunar installation. The available sources do not establish how much power the system has produced on the Moon or how its output would vary with operating conditions.

- The Aries 1B is a fictional spacecraft seen in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- It is a spherical lunar lander built for providing regular passenger commuting between Earth's orbit and the Moon, just as the Orion III spaceplane (also operated by Pan Am) provided for travel between the Earth and Space Station V.
- It is nuclear powered, the high performance of its engines allowing it to make a fast transfer to the moon (at about one day, compared to three days which were necessary for Apollo).
- It also carries a retractable landing gear.
- Model size is about 14" by 14" tall and is 1/48 scale.
How tall is the tower?
The published figures do not agree. Space.com’s October 2026 report and Blue Origin’s MK1 page describe a 20-meter-tall system. A Blue Origin corporate LinkedIn post gives a total height of 26 meters. The sources do not explain whether the numbers refer to different parts of the structure or reflect a design change, so neither should be treated as a reconciled final dimension.
Has Blue Origin tested it on the Moon?
No lunar deployment is established by the sources cited here. Space.com says the video accompanying Blue Origin’s post showed a deployment test on Earth dated July 22, 2026. That is a terrestrial analog test: it can show a deployment sequence, but it is not evidence that the hardware has flown to or operated on the Moon.

Does this mean NASA has selected the Power Tower?
No. NASA’s Moon Base program page describes a broader, staged plan: Phase One runs through 2029; Phase Two, from 2029 to 2032, is intended to establish early infrastructure including power; and Phase Three begins in 2032 and focuses on living and working on the Moon. NASA also says it is advancing fission power for reliable long-term energy alongside work relevant to solar power. Those program goals do not establish that NASA has chosen Blue Origin’s specific tower. NASA’s Moon Base page sets out the phases.
NASA announced Blue Origin task orders worth $188 million, with a $280.4 million option period, for work supporting delivery of lunar terrain vehicles. That award is separate from the Power Tower; it is not identified as a contract to build or deploy this solar system. NASA’s May 2026 release describes the task orders.

Why place solar arrays near the lunar South Pole?
Blue Origin’s concept is intended to use high locations near the South Pole where sunlight may be available for extended periods, helping supply surface equipment. Solar generation still depends on the local light conditions and would need to be considered alongside storage and other sources of power. NASA’s work on fission power reflects a separate approach to reliable, long-term energy; the cited material does not provide a direct comparison of the systems or say they are mutually exclusive.
Blue Origin has not established a confirmed launch or deployment date, or an operational lifetime, for the Power Tower in the sources cited here.
