Blu-ray vs 4K UHD Blu-ray Ripping: File Sizes, Quality, Hardware, and Workflow

A standard Blu-ray rip is usually about 25–50 GB, while a 4K HDR UHD Blu-ray rip commonly needs about 50–100 GB when you keep the video as a remux. Those are planning ranges, not format limits: a full-disc backup can approach the disc’s capacity, and a HandBrake encode can be smaller still. UHD ripping also has a hardware gate that ordinary Blu-ray ripping does not: you need a BDXL-compatible optical drive with LibreDrive support. Standard Blu-ray generally works with a normal supported Blu-ray drive.

UHD’s advantage is not only pixel count. Its 3840×2160 image is normally encoded with HEVC Main 10, 10-bit precision, BT.2020 signaling and HDR, with Dolby Vision or HDR10+ on some releases. A remux preserves that disc stream and its original audio; an encode trades some fidelity and processing time for lower storage use and easier playback.

What the two disc formats actually contain

“Blu-ray” and “4K Blu-ray” describe different media and video specifications. The physical capacity sets an upper bound, but it does not tell you the size of the movie file you will create. Your ripping choice—full-disc backup, main-feature remux or re-encode—determines how much of that capacity ends up on your storage.

Format Documented disc capacities Typical video characteristics What the capacity means for a rip
Standard Blu-ray 25 GB single-layer; 50 GB dual-layer (Blu-ray Disc Association, 2015) 1080p-era codecs; normally SDR with BT.709 signaling A full backup can approach 25 or 50 GB. A main-feature remux is often smaller because menus, extras and duplicate playlists are omitted.
UHD Blu-ray 50 GB, 66 GB or 100 GB; 66 GB is dual-layer and 100 GB is triple-layer (Blu-ray Disc Association, 2015) 3840×2160, HEVC Main 10, 10-bit, BT.2020 signaling and HDR; some releases add Dolby Vision or HDR10+ A full backup can approach the disc’s capacity. A main-feature remux may be substantially smaller, but UHD video and audio usually require more space than their 1080p counterparts.

The 66 GB and 100 GB figures are UHD media capacities, not promises that every movie uses all available space. Studios allocate room differently for the feature, alternate cuts, extras, menus, multiple audio tracks and subtitles. Conversely, a long movie with a high video bitrate can fill much of the available capacity even when it has few extras.

How large should you expect a rip to be?

For capacity planning, use two practical ranges: roughly 25–50 GB for a standard Blu-ray rip and roughly 50–100 GB for a 4K HDR rip. The latter is an observed guide range reported by Spatacoli in 2025, not a value specified by the UHD standard. Runtime, bitrate, audio formats, extras and playlist selection can move an individual file outside either range.

Full-disc backup

A full-disc backup retains the disc structure, menus, extras and every playlist. Its size can approach the physical ceiling: about 25 or 50 GB for standard Blu-ray, and about 50, 66 or 100 GB for UHD media. This is the most complete preservation choice, but it uses the most storage and is less convenient for ordinary media-server playback.

Main-feature remux

A remux copies the selected video and audio streams into a container such as MKV without re-encoding them. Selecting only the correct feature playlist removes menus, trailers, bonus material and duplicate playlists, so the resulting file can be far smaller than a full-disc image while retaining source quality. UHD remuxes commonly land in the 50–100 GB planning band; a short film with modest audio may be smaller, while a long film with several lossless tracks may be larger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Re-encoded file

HandBrake can decode the remux and create a new H.265 or H.264 file at a chosen quality and bitrate. The result may be dramatically smaller, but its size depends on resolution, encoder, quality setting, grain, motion and audio choices. Because it is a new encode, it cannot retain every source detail exactly. Treat the output size as a setting-dependent result, not a fixed percentage of the disc.

A simple storage budget

Multiply the number of titles by the range that matches your policy, then add room for audio variants, extras, temporary encode files and backups. For example, budgeting 50–100 GB per UHD remux means ten titles require approximately 500 GB to 1 TB before overhead and duplicate copies. If you keep both the original remux and an encoded streaming copy, count both files. A high-capacity hard-drive array or NAS is useful when your library includes many UHD remuxes, but redundancy and a separate backup remain necessary because a single storage device is not an archive.

Why two rips of the same movie can differ so much

  • Runtime: A three-hour feature contains more encoded video than a 90-minute feature at the same average bitrate.
  • Video bitrate: Authoring choices determine how many bits are allocated to each scene. UHD authoring targets can use total bitrates of 50 Mbps or 100 Mbps (Dolby Laboratories, 2018), while the Blu-ray Disc Association lists UHD stream maxima of 108 Mbps for 66 GB discs and 128 Mbps for 100 GB discs. These are ceilings or targets, not average rates for every title.
  • Audio: Uncompressed or lossless surround tracks consume substantially more space than a single compressed stereo track. Keeping several language tracks increases the MKV size.
  • Extras and alternate versions: Director’s cuts, commentaries, deleted scenes and bonus features can add many gigabytes to a full backup.
  • Playlist selection: Some discs contain duplicate or obfuscated playlists. Choosing the feature playlist rather than every playlist avoids copying redundant streams.
  • Container and metadata: MKV overhead is small compared with the media streams, but chapters, subtitles and attachments still add some data.

For these reasons, “a 4K rip is twice the size” is a rough planning shortcut, not a rule. A short, efficiently authored UHD title may approach the size of a long, high-bitrate standard Blu-ray, while a lengthy UHD disc with multiple lossless tracks can be much larger.

What quality does UHD preserve?

UHD Blu-ray’s quality advantage comes from the complete imaging chain. The format supports 3840×2160 pixels, HEVC Main 10 compression, 10-bit precision, BT.2020 color signaling and HDR10, with Dolby Vision or HDR10+ on supported releases. Standard Blu-ray normally carries a 1920×1080 image using older 1080p-era codecs and SDR/BT.709 signaling.

Attribute Standard Blu-ray UHD Blu-ray
Nominal resolution 1920×1080 3840×2160
Common video generation 1080p-era codecs HEVC Main 10
Bit depth Typically 8-bit 10-bit
Color signaling Normally BT.709 BT.2020 signaling
Dynamic range Normally SDR HDR10; Dolby Vision or HDR10+ on some releases
Typical remux storage planning About 25–50 GB About 50–100 GB for observed 4K HDR remuxes

A remux preserves the disc’s encoded signal, including HDR metadata and lossless audio when those streams are selected. An encode can preserve HDR if your workflow and playback devices support it, but every additional conversion is an opportunity to choose incompatible settings or discard metadata. Keep the remux when you want a reference copy for future re-encoding or the most faithful reproduction of the disc.

Higher resolution does not guarantee a better-looking transfer. A UHD release can be an upscale, use a weak master or have authoring problems; a well-mastered standard Blu-ray can still look excellent. Compare the actual transfer and your display’s capabilities rather than assuming that the UHD label alone determines image quality.

Do you need a special drive for UHD ripping?

Yes. UHD ripping generally requires a BDXL-compatible optical drive that supports LibreDrive. MakeMKV’s UHD FAQ states that a BDXL-compatible LibreDrive drive is required and describes most “official” and all “friendly” UHD drives as compatible categories. A retail label that merely says “Blu-ray” does not prove UHD-ripping support.

Ordinary Blu-ray discs generally work with a normal Blu-ray optical drive supported by your ripping software. That drive still needs to read the disc reliably, but it does not need the UHD-specific BDXL and LibreDrive path.

Hardware checklist

  • For standard Blu-ray: a supported internal or external Blu-ray drive, enough temporary storage for the selected title and software that can read the disc.
  • For UHD Blu-ray: a BDXL-capable drive with confirmed LibreDrive support, current compatibility information for the exact revision and storage sized for 50–100 GB planning per remux.
  • For encoding: a workstation with enough free space for both the source remux and the output. Encoding speed and playback support vary with CPU, GPU, encoder and settings; there is no single universal time or speed.
  • For library playback: a client or media server that can handle HEVC, 10-bit video and HDR if you intend to play the UHD remux without transcoding.

A reliable MakeMKV workflow

MakeMKV reads the disc and can stream decrypted video without an intermediate conversion. Its conversion speed is limited mainly by how quickly the optical drive can read the data. The exact labels can vary by version, but the decisions are consistent.

  1. Confirm the disc and your rights. Use discs you own or are otherwise authorized to process, and check the rules in your country before bypassing technical protection.
  2. Verify the drive. For UHD, confirm BDXL and LibreDrive compatibility for the exact model and revision. For standard Blu-ray, confirm that the drive is supported by MakeMKV.
  3. Insert the disc and let MakeMKV scan it. The program will display titles, playlists, chapters, video streams, audio tracks and subtitles.
  4. Identify the feature playlist. Compare runtime, chapter count, language and stream information. Do not automatically select every title: duplicate playlists and extras can consume the same storage as the feature.
  5. Select the streams you need. Keep the original video, the audio languages and formats you actually use, desired subtitles and chapters. Retaining every commentary and language increases size.
  6. Choose an output location with headroom. A UHD remux can require tens of gigabytes, and an encode may need additional temporary space. Avoid filling the destination volume to its limit.
  7. Create the MKV remux. MakeMKV packages the selected streams without re-encoding them, so the output retains the source resolution, HDR signaling and audio formats you selected.
  8. Verify the result. Open the MKV on a known-compatible player, check the runtime and chapter list, confirm the expected audio and subtitle tracks, and verify that HDR is detected when your display supports it.
  9. Decide whether to encode. Keep the MKV as your archival or master copy, or send it to HandBrake for a smaller playback copy.

Remux or HandBrake encode: which should you keep?

Priority Keep the MakeMKV remux Create a HandBrake encode
Image and audio fidelity Best choice: no generational video loss and original selected audio streams remain. Some source information is discarded during encoding; quality depends on settings.
Storage Requires roughly the full main-feature stream size, often 25–50 GB for standard Blu-ray or 50–100 GB for UHD HDR planning. Can reduce storage substantially, but the final size is not predictable without choosing an encoder and quality target.
Network playback High bitrate and large files can require more network bandwidth or direct-play support. Lower bitrate can be easier for remote or constrained connections.
Device compatibility Requires HEVC, 10-bit, HDR and audio support for UHD features; unsupported clients may transcode. Lets you choose codecs, audio and subtitles that more clients can decode, at the cost of another encode.
Future flexibility Best source for later encodes, HDR decisions or new playback hardware. A convenient derivative, but you cannot recover details removed by the encode.
Time and equipment Created at the drive’s read speed without a video-compression pass. Requires an additional encode whose speed depends on CPU/GPU hardware and settings.

HandBrake’s own guidance frames encoding as a compromise among quality, online playback and file size. Use it when storage, bandwidth or client compatibility is more important than retaining an untouched stream. A practical policy is to keep one remux for titles you may rewatch, edit or re-encode later, and create smaller derivatives only for devices or networks that need them.

Playback and bandwidth considerations

Large storage is only one part of a UHD workflow. A client that cannot decode HEVC Main 10, HDR or the selected lossless audio may transcode the file, increasing server load and potentially changing the picture or sound. Direct play avoids that conversion but requires the player, display and audio chain to support the stream.

UHD authoring can target 50 or 100 Mbps total bitrate (Dolby Laboratories, 2018), and the Blu-ray Disc Association lists maximum UHD stream rates of 108 Mbps for 66 GB media and 128 Mbps for 100 GB media. Your network must sustain the actual peak rate, not merely the file’s average bitrate. Wireless interference, competing traffic and server disk performance can cause stutter even when the nominal internet connection appears fast enough.

Protection, drive behavior and legal limits

Commercial Blu-ray discs may use AACS and, on some titles, BD+. UHD releases can use AACS 2.0 or 2.1 and may add bus encryption, as documented by FreeMKV. The software and drive must be able to process the protection before a usable remux can be created.

Technical ability is separate from legal permission. Copyright exceptions and anti-circumvention rules differ by country, and the sources cited here do not establish a blanket right to bypass protection. Restrict your workflow to discs you own or have permission to process, and check the law where you live—especially if you plan to share files or distribute them outside your household.

Troubleshooting common failures

The drive reads ordinary Blu-ray but not UHD

Check BDXL support, LibreDrive status and the exact firmware revision. A drive marketed as Blu-ray-only may be perfectly functional yet unsuitable for UHD. If the model is listed as compatible but the revision is not, confirm the revision before changing firmware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MakeMKV shows many similar playlists

Compare runtimes, chapter counts and stream languages, then choose the playlist matching the feature. Selecting every playlist wastes space and can produce duplicate copies. If the disc uses unusual playlist authoring and you cannot establish which title is correct, retain the disc structure or inspect the available metadata before committing to a large remux.

The output is unexpectedly huge

Review the selected audio languages, commentaries, subtitles, extras and alternate cuts. A full-disc backup or multiple lossless tracks can account for many additional gigabytes. Remove unneeded streams and create a main-feature remux if you do not require menus and bonus material.

HDR is missing during playback

First verify that the selected source stream is HDR and that the player, display and connection support it. If a HandBrake encode was created, check the encoder’s HDR handling and output settings; a client may also be tone-mapping or transcoding instead of direct-playing the file.

Playback stutters

Check whether the client is direct-playing HEVC and the original audio. If it is transcoding, reduce the file’s demands with a compatible encode or use a player that supports the remux. Also check local network throughput and storage performance rather than assuming the optical rip itself is damaged.

A decision guide for your library

  • Choose a standard Blu-ray remux when your source is 1080p, you want original quality and your storage budget fits roughly 25–50 GB per title.
  • Choose a UHD remux when you have a compatible BDXL/LibreDrive setup, a capable HDR display and enough storage for roughly 50–100 GB per title.
  • Choose an encode when you need smaller files, lower streaming bandwidth or broader client compatibility, and you accept the time and quality trade-off.
  • Keep both when a title matters: retain the remux as the source and create an encode for everyday playback.
  • Use a full-disc backup only when menus, extras, alternate playlists or complete disc preservation justify approaching the physical capacity.

The most defensible default for a serious collection is to make a main-feature remux, verify it, and encode a separate copy only when a real storage or playback constraint exists. That approach preserves UHD’s 10-bit HDR presentation and original audio while avoiding the unnecessary cost of carrying every menu and duplicate playlist.
