Bloom Energy and FuelCell Energy both provide continuous, distributed power for commercial and industrial customers, but they are not selling the same core technology or operating in the same way. Bloom’s principal commercial product is a high-temperature solid oxide fuel-cell system called the Energy Server. FuelCell Energy’s current commercial emphasis is carbonate fuel-cell systems, while its 2025 restructuring ended solid oxide power-generation development and retained solid oxide work for electrolysis demonstrations.

That distinction changes how to compare efficiency, fuel flexibility, revenue, project risk and service obligations. Bloom primarily sells Energy Server equipment and adds long-term operations and maintenance agreements. FuelCell Energy describes a broader project model covering system design and manufacture, development, installation, operation and maintenance. Neither company’s disclosures provide a normalized, independent head-to-head financial or technical performance comparison.

How Bloom Energy’s business model works

Equipment sales are the primary revenue engine

Bloom describes Energy Server product sales as its main source of revenue. The system is sold to organizations that need firm, onsite or distributed electricity, including data centers, semiconductor manufacturers, AI infrastructure operators, utilities and other industrial customers. A buyer is therefore purchasing a physical generation asset and the engineering and deployment associated with putting it into service, rather than subscribing to a household electricity product.

The product-sales model can produce a large order when a customer builds capacity, but revenue timing depends on contracts, manufacturing, delivery, installation and customer acceptance. A single large project can make a period look stronger or weaker without revealing the long-term economics of the installed fleet. The available company disclosures do not establish a normalized split between equipment margin, installation revenue and project financing for a direct comparison with FuelCell Energy.

Long-term service adds a recurring component

Bloom also sells long-term operations and maintenance agreements. These contracts can provide recurring service revenue after an Energy Server is installed and can align the company with uptime, maintenance scheduling, component replacement and remote support. The duration, renewal rate, margin and customer concentration of those agreements are not stated in the evidence used here, so it would be misleading to treat all Bloom revenue as recurring.

Manufacturing expansion is a strategic bet

Bloom says it plans to increase annual production capacity at its Fremont facility from approximately 1 gigawatt to 2 gigawatts by the end of 2026. This is a stated company plan, not confirmation that the doubled capacity has been completed or fully utilized. Reaching it would require equipment, suppliers, labor, quality control, working capital and enough customer demand to absorb the output.

How FuelCell Energy’s business model works

A project model spans the full asset lifecycle

FuelCell Energy describes a wider project-oriented model. Its activities can include designing and manufacturing systems, developing projects, installing equipment, owning or operating projects and providing maintenance. That structure gives the company more ways to participate in a power project than a straightforward equipment sale, but it also exposes the business to permitting, construction, financing, offtake, operating and asset-performance risks.

FuelCell Energy’s market descriptions include utility-scale and onsite power, carbon capture, local hydrogen production and long-duration storage. These are not all equivalent commercial businesses. Some represent established product or project activity, while others are development or demonstration areas. A buyer should ask which technology, contract and revenue source applies to the specific proposal rather than assuming that every adjacent market is currently material.

Project ownership changes the financial profile

If FuelCell Energy develops or operates a project, revenue may arrive over a longer period and require capital before electricity or service payments are collected. If it only manufactures and sells a system, the economics look more like an equipment transaction. The company’s public descriptions cover both kinds of participation, but the evidence here does not provide a normalized current mix of product sales, service revenue, project ownership and power-generation revenue. That prevents a fair claim that FuelCell Energy is either consistently more capital-intensive or consistently more recurring-revenue oriented than Bloom.

Which fuel-cell technology does each company use?

Bloom Energy: solid oxide fuel cells

Bloom’s Energy Server uses high-temperature solid oxide fuel cells. Fuel is converted electrochemically rather than burned in a conventional combustion engine. The solid oxide architecture operates at high temperature, which can support efficient electrochemical conversion and integration with heat-management systems, but it also creates demanding materials, sealing, thermal-cycling and degradation requirements.

Solid oxide technology is not automatically cleaner or more efficient in every case. Results depend on the fuel supplied, the system boundary used to calculate efficiency, operating load, degradation, replacement intervals, grid backup, upstream fuel production and whether useful heat is counted. Bloom’s disclosures identify those kinds of manufacturing, supply-chain, demand, financing, incentive and execution risks; they do not establish a universal emissions or lifecycle-cost advantage over every carbonate installation.

FuelCell Energy: carbonate fuel cells for current commercial power

FuelCell Energy’s current commercial emphasis is carbonate fuel-cell systems. The company says the technology can use biogas and supports applications such as combined heat and power. Carbonate systems can therefore be evaluated not only as electricity generators but also as assets that may recover useful heat or operate with a site’s available gas stream.

Fuel flexibility is site-specific. A project still needs a qualified fuel supply, gas cleanup where required, interconnection, controls, maintenance access and a plan for interruptions or changes in fuel quality. Biogas availability, contaminants, pressure and consistency can materially affect design and operating costs. The presence of a fuel option in a product description is not a guarantee that a particular site can use it without additional treatment equipment.

FuelCell Energy’s solid oxide clarification

FuelCell Energy is not currently a commercial solid oxide power-generation counterpart to Bloom on the basis of its 2025 Form 10-K. During restructurings announced in November 2024 and June 2025, the company redirected resources toward carbonate technology and stopped solid oxide power-generation development. It continues to demonstrate a solid oxide electrolysis product, which is a hydrogen-production application rather than the same commercial power system Bloom sells.

This distinction matters when reading older presentations or comparing technology road maps. A reference to FuelCell Energy solid oxide work may describe a former power-generation program or an ongoing electrolysis demonstration; it should not be treated as evidence that the company currently offers a commercial solid oxide electricity platform equivalent to Bloom’s Energy Server.

Efficiency: what the published numbers do and do not show

FuelCell Energy reported a 47% to 50% carbonate fuel-cell product-efficiency range for 2025. It also reported total efficiency above 80% when a system is configured for combined heat and power. These are company-reported figures, not independent test results.

Figure What it describes How to interpret it
47%–50% FuelCell Energy carbonate fuel-cell product efficiency, reported by the company for 2025 Likely an electrical-product measure; confirm fuel input, load, degradation state and system boundary in a project proposal
More than 80% FuelCell Energy total efficiency when configured for combined heat and power, reported by the company for 2025 Includes useful heat; it is not directly comparable with an electrical-only efficiency number
Bloom Energy efficiency No matched figure established here Do not infer superiority or inferiority without the same fuel, scale, boundary, load, heat treatment and operating period

A valid comparison would specify the same power scale, fuel, location, uptime definition, electrical-versus-CHP boundary, financing structure and lifecycle period. It would also account for stack degradation, scheduled replacements, parasitic loads, gas cleanup, heat demand and the value of exported electricity or heat. Without those controls, placing a single percentage beside another percentage creates false precision.

Execution and strategy risks

Bloom’s disclosed risks

Bloom identifies risks associated with expanding manufacturing, securing supply, forecasting customer demand, obtaining financing, managing costs and qualifying for incentives. Its Fremont capacity plan increases the importance of execution: production capacity that is built ahead of orders can pressure utilization and cash flow, while demand that arrives faster than suppliers or factories can respond can delay deliveries.

Customers should also evaluate the commercial assumptions behind a deployment. A project may depend on electricity-price forecasts, grid-interconnection timing, tax or other incentives, fuel availability, financing approval and a required uptime level. Changes in any of those assumptions can alter the payback period even if the Energy Server itself operates as specified.

FuelCell Energy’s restructuring and technology risks

FuelCell Energy announced restructurings in November 2024 and June 2025, citing slower-than-expected investment in clean-energy markets. The changes reduced costs, cut workforce and redirected resources toward carbonate technology. Restructuring can improve focus and lower expenses, but it can also affect development schedules, support capacity, supplier relationships and the pace at which new projects reach commercial operation.

FuelCell Energy reported a $65.8 million impairment expense in fiscal 2025 related to earlier solid oxide technology investments, including goodwill, in-process research and development assets, property and equipment and inventory. The impairment is an accounting charge rather than a direct measure of future carbonate-system performance, but it demonstrates that prior technology investments were written down and that development choices have financial consequences.

The company also identifies commercialization, market-investment, restructuring-execution and development or scale-up risks across carbonate and adjacent technologies. Carbon capture, hydrogen and long-duration storage should therefore be assessed by the maturity of the specific project, not by the existence of a market description alone.

How to choose between the two for a real project

1. Define the site’s electrical requirement

Record peak demand, average load, critical loads, desired islanding capability, outage tolerance, interconnection limits and the planned operating life. A data center with a strict uptime requirement may value redundancy and service response differently from a manufacturing plant that can use both electricity and process heat.

2. Decide whether useful heat has value

If the facility can continuously use hot water, steam or process heat, request a combined-heat-and-power design and calculate efficiency using the same heat-use assumptions for both vendors. If there is no dependable thermal load, compare electrical output alone and do not count theoretical heat that the site cannot use.

3. Verify the fuel pathway

Specify natural gas, pipeline-quality renewable gas, biogas or another permitted fuel; then check pressure, contaminants, seasonal availability, backup supply and treatment equipment. FuelCell Energy’s ability to use biogas can be valuable only where the site has a reliable, contractable source. Bloom’s solid oxide system likewise needs a fuel and gas-quality assessment rather than a generic technology label.

4. Compare the complete installed system

Request a line-item scope covering stacks or modules, power electronics, controls, gas treatment, heat recovery, switchgear, civil work, interconnection, permitting, commissioning, spare parts and decommissioning. Compare net usable output, not nameplate output, and require the same assumptions for parasitic consumption and backup generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Put degradation and replacement in writing

Ask for guaranteed output at commissioning and at defined future years, expected degradation, replacement intervals, replacement cost, outage duration and who bears performance risk. A nominal efficiency number without a degradation curve is insufficient for a lifecycle comparison.

6. Analyze the contract and counterparty

Separate equipment warranty, long-term service, availability guarantees, liquidated damages, fuel responsibility, parts availability, cybersecurity obligations and termination rights. For an operated project, identify who owns the asset, who carries financing and operating risk, and what happens if the developer restructures or a project is delayed.

7. Stress-test the economics

Model electricity prices, demand charges, fuel prices, incentive changes, curtailment, downtime, stack replacement, financing rates and residual value. Use a common analysis period and disclose whether the result is based on a one-time incentive or a recurring revenue assumption.

Questions to ask each vendor

  • What is the guaranteed net electrical output at the site’s design conditions?
  • Which efficiency definition is being quoted, and are useful heat, parasitic loads and fuel-treatment energy included?
  • What fuel quality, pressure and treatment equipment are required?
  • What degradation and replacement schedule should the owner budget?
  • What availability is guaranteed, and how are planned outages counted?
  • Which party owns the project, provides financing and pays for interconnection and civil works?
  • What service response time and spare-parts inventory are contractually committed?
  • Which claims describe a commercial product today and which describe a demonstration or development program?
  • What assumptions depend on incentives, tax treatment, renewable-gas certificates or other policy mechanisms?

What this comparison cannot establish

The available company filings and reports do not provide matched lifecycle costs, independent comparative emissions, current-quarter financial results or audited head-to-head operating performance. They also do not establish that either company is categorically cleaner, more efficient, cheaper or less risky for every customer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Company annual reports are authoritative for what each business says it sells, plans and risks, but they are not independent technical validation. A procurement team should obtain site-specific engineering studies, third-party test data where available, warranty terms and a financeable project model before selecting a system.

Bottom-line decision framework

Choose Bloom for further evaluation when a project specifically benefits from a commercial solid oxide Energy Server, wants an equipment-led deployment with optional long-term service and can support the fuel, financing and uptime assumptions required for that system. Treat the Fremont expansion as a capacity plan to monitor, not as completed capacity.

Choose FuelCell Energy for further evaluation when a carbonate system, biogas pathway, combined-heat-and-power configuration or broader project-development role fits the site. Confirm the commercial status of every adjacent hydrogen, carbon-capture or storage feature, and account for the company’s 2024–2025 restructuring, workforce reductions and fiscal-2025 solid oxide impairment when assessing execution and support risk.

The most defensible comparison is not a single efficiency percentage or a technology slogan. It is a matched, site-specific model that uses the same fuel, power level, heat boundary, uptime definition, financing structure and lifecycle period, then tests the contractual and execution risks disclosed by both companies.
