For faster combat in Bloodborne, change the camera until right-stick tracking feels controllable, use lock-on selectively, and build your attacks around directional quicksteps rather than retreating rolls. The winning beginner rhythm is one to three R1 attacks, a dodge with stamina left, and immediate counterattacks when the orange rally window appears. Use L2 just before a telegraphed strike to parry, then press R1 at close range for a visceral attack.
These adjustments improve control and decision-making, not the console’s frame rate. No cited source provides a measured percentage or frame-time gain from a particular setting. “Bloodborne rewards a smart offense,” the 2015 PlayStation Blog beginner advice says; speed comes from controlled forward pressure, not continuous button mashing.

What “faster combat” actually means
Bloodborne has no setting that makes attacks or animations run at a higher frame rate. In this context, faster combat means spending less time recovering from missed inputs, moving through an attack instead of away from it, and keeping your turn after a successful stagger. Camera behavior, lock-on state, stamina management and weapon transformations determine whether those actions feel immediate.

- Unlocked roll: Without lock-on, Circle performs a roll that gives broader free-movement control.
- Backstep: A neutral Circle input while locked on steps straight back rather than moving around the enemy.
- Rally: Attacking soon after damage can recover some or most of the lost health shown in orange.
- Stamina discipline: Attacks, dodges and running all drain the same stamina bar; an empty bar leaves you unable to evade.
The practical goal is to choose the movement and camera mode that fits the encounter, then stop attacking before your stamina disappears.

Set up the camera before changing your habits
Adjust Camera Sensitivity
Open the controls or game-options area and find Camera Sensitivity. Move it in small increments while turning around a stationary object and while tracking a moving enemy. A higher value lets the right stick turn the view more quickly; a lower value gives finer control. Keep the setting that lets you center an enemy without overshooting, rather than copying another player’s number.
Decide whether Camera Auto-Adjust helps
Camera Auto-Adjust can correct the view as you move, but walls and narrow corridors may force the camera toward an unhelpful angle. If the correction repeatedly hides an enemy or pushes the view into a wall, turn it off and steer the camera yourself. In open areas, leaving it on may feel less demanding. This is a visibility choice, not a damage or speed multiplier.
Use lock-on as a tool, not a permanent mode
Press R3 to lock onto a nearby enemy. Lock-on makes directional quicksteps available and gives the firearm a predictable target. It is usually useful for one tough enemy. Against groups, cramped geometry or some large bosses, the tracking camera can obstruct your view; press R3 again to unlock and manually guide the camera.
Axis inversion and physical remapping
The same controls or game-options area includes camera-axis inversion. Choose the vertical or horizontal direction that matches your existing controller habits, then test it in a safe area before entering a boss fight.
For a physical accessibility change on PS4, use Settings > Accessibility > Custom Button Assignments. The system swaps the roles of two buttons, but on-screen directions continue to show the original layout. Keep a written reminder beside you while learning so an instruction such as “press Circle” is not confused with the button’s new role.
Core controls and the quickest safe inputs
| Input | Action | Beginner use |
|---|---|---|
| R3 | Lock on or release lock-on | Use for a single target, quicksteps and reliable firearm aiming; unlock for groups or obstructive boss cameras. |
| Circle + direction | Quickstep while locked on; roll while unlocked | Move diagonally through an attack instead of backing straight away. |
| Circle with no direction | Backstep while locked on | Useful for a small retreat, but it does not reposition around the enemy as quickly as a directional step. |
| R1 | Fast right-hand attack | Use short strings and reserve stamina for the next dodge. |
| R2 | Heavy attack; hold for a charged attack | A charged R2 is especially useful behind a stationary or unaware enemy before a visceral opportunity. |
| L1 | Transform the trick weapon | Transform during an attack, roll or quickstep; practice R1 then L1 to continue pressure without opening a menu. |
| L2 | Fire the equipped firearm | Press just before an incoming attack lands to attempt a stagger, then close in for the visceral. |
Learn the location of each button by feel. Looking down at the controller during an attack is slower than spending a few minutes practicing the sequence in an empty area.

A step-by-step combat loop for beginners
- Select one target. Tap R3 when you want the lock-on camera, quicksteps and firearm aim. If additional enemies enter the fight or the camera becomes confusing, unlock before you are surrounded.
- Read the attack cue. Watch the enemy’s shoulder, weapon or lunge rather than reacting to the damage animation. You are choosing between a quickstep, a roll, a parry or a retreat.
- Move diagonally with Circle. While locked on, hold a direction and press Circle as the strike arrives. Passing beside the attack usually leaves you closer to the enemy’s flank than a straight backward step.
- Deliver a short R1 string. Start with one attack; add a second or third only if the enemy is still recovering and your stamina bar can fund an escape.
- Stop before empty stamina. Release the attack button and allow enough stamina for another Circle input. Running away until the bar refills is safer than attacking while exhausted, but it gives up the initiative.
- Exploit rally. After taking a hit, look at the orange section of the health bar. Attack promptly during the brief window to recover some or most of that missing health. If the enemy is already winding up another strike, dodge first rather than trading damage blindly.
- Transform when it adds value. Tap L1 during a suitable attack, roll or quickstep to change the trick weapon’s form and keep your turn. Use the compact form for a close exchange and the alternate form when its reach or crowd control solves the immediate problem.
- Finish or disengage deliberately. When the enemy is staggered, close the distance for the visceral input. If no opening appears, leave with stamina remaining and reset the camera instead of forcing a final hit.
Lock-on quicksteps versus unlocked rolls
When lock-on is faster
Directional quicksteps cover a short distance with a rapid recovery, making them ideal for circling one humanoid enemy. Hold a direction toward the enemy’s side or back and press Circle as the attack reaches you. Because the target remains centered, you can immediately answer with R1 without first finding the enemy on screen.

When an unlocked roll is safer
Unlock when several enemies can attack from different angles, when a large body fills the camera, or when terrain makes the tracking view misleading. Free movement lets you roll through a group, steer around a boss’s legs and choose the next target manually. The roll is not automatically slower; it is a different movement option with more distance and less camera assistance.
How to practice the choice
Against one ordinary enemy, fight one attempt locked on and one attempt unlocked. Notice whether you lose the target, collide with scenery or spend stamina turning the camera. Keep lock-on when it reduces those problems; release it when the camera itself becomes the danger.
Parrying and visceral attacks without guessing
Time the firearm, not the animation’s end
Press L2 just before the enemy’s attack would connect. A successful shot interrupts the swing and produces a stagger. Firing too early can let the enemy recover before contact; firing after the hit has landed does not prevent the damage. Start by learning one enemy’s most obvious, repeatable strike instead of trying to parry every move.
Convert the stagger
After the stagger sound and posture change, move close to the enemy and press R1. Distance matters: a shot from far away may stagger an enemy but leave you too far to trigger the visceral. If the opening is uncertain, take one quickstep forward rather than several attacks that could consume the window.

Choose dodging when the timing is unknown
Parrying is powerful but optional. Against a new enemy, a directional quickstep or unlocked roll is the dependable first response. Once you recognize the attack cue, add the firearm to that specific exchange. This lowers the cost of a missed experiment while you learn.

Rally: recovering health through smart aggression
When an attack damages you, part of the lost health appears as an orange portion of the bar for a short period. Hitting the attacker during that period can restore some or most of it. Rally is strongest when the enemy has a long recovery animation and your route to it is clear.
- Identify the orange segment immediately instead of healing automatically.
- Use one or two controlled R1 attacks, then reassess the enemy’s next cue.
- Do not chase rally through a second enemy, a hazard or an empty stamina bar.
- If the orange segment is disappearing and the enemy is active again, disengage and use your normal recovery plan.
The mechanic rewards a measured counterattack, not standing in front of an enemy and exchanging hits.
Trick-weapon transformations as a speed habit
Every melee weapon has two forms, giving it different answers for a single opponent or a crowd. L1 transforms the weapon and can be pressed during an attack, roll or quickstep. That means you can change reach or crowd-control properties without opening a menu or waiting through a separate stance command.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A simple drill
- Approach one safe enemy and press R1 once.
- During the recovery, tap L1 and observe the transformed follow-up.
- Circle with a directional quickstep, then use R1 from the new position.
- Repeat until the L1 timing no longer interrupts your movement.
Do not transform merely to fill every opening. Use the form that solves the current spacing problem, and preserve stamina for the exit.

| Choice | Strength | Cost or risk | Best starting use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lock-on plus quickstep | Fast lateral movement and consistent firearm aim against one target | Camera can obstruct groups, walls or very large enemies | One humanoid enemy in open space |
| Unlocked roll and free camera | Flexible route through groups and around oversized bosses | You must manually keep the target in view | Multiple enemies or poor lock-on geometry |
| Rally counterattack | Can recover some or most recently lost health | Requires a safe opening and stamina | A single hit followed by a long enemy recovery |
| Firearm parry | Creates a visceral opportunity and can end an exchange quickly | Missed timing leaves you exposed and consumes a bullet | A telegraphed attack you have practiced |
| Camera Auto-Adjust on | Less manual correction in open areas | May push the view into walls or hide threats in tight spaces | Open rooms and early exploration |
| Camera Auto-Adjust off | Consistent manual control in cramped areas | More work for the right stick | Corridors, corners and camera-sensitive boss arenas |
The available guidance does not establish a frame-rate, damage or quantified speed advantage for any row. Compare them by whether you can see the attack and leave with stamina.
A 15-minute practice plan
- Two minutes: camera. Test sensitivity, inversion and Auto-Adjust while walking around an object. Stop when you can turn without fighting the stick.
- Three minutes: movement. Lock on and alternate left, right and forward directional quicksteps. Add neutral Circle to feel the difference between a backstep and a lateral step.
- Three minutes: stamina. Perform one, two and three R1 attacks, then dodge. Find the longest string that still leaves a visible escape reserve.
- Three minutes: rally. Allow a safe enemy to land one hit, then counterattack once or twice during the orange window. Reset if another enemy joins.
- Two minutes: parry. Practice L2 against one predictable swing. Do not add visceral movement until the stagger is consistent.
- Two minutes: transformation. Combine R1, L1 and a directional quickstep, then stop. The objective is a clean transition, not maximum button speed.
Troubleshooting common beginner problems
“My quickstep feels like a roll.”
Check that you are locked on with R3 and holding a direction while pressing Circle. A neutral Circle input backsteps; an unlocked input rolls.

“The camera loses the enemy.”
Unlock when fighting a group or a large boss, lower sensitivity if you overshoot, and turn Auto-Adjust off if walls are forcing the view away from the action.
“I keep getting hit after attacking.”
Shorten the R1 string by one hit and reserve stamina for Circle. Attacks, dodges and running share the stamina resource, so an empty bar removes your escape.
“My parry staggers the enemy but I miss the visceral.”
Move closer immediately after the stagger and press R1. The firearm can create the opening from a distance, but the visceral requires close range.
“I lose health while trying to rally.”
Only counterattack when the enemy’s recovery is clear. Rally is an opportunity, not a requirement; dodge or disengage when a second strike is already starting.
“The button prompts no longer match my controller.”
PS4 Custom Button Assignments changes the physical mapping without changing on-screen instructions. Keep a written map until the replacement layout becomes automatic.
What to change first
Start with camera sensitivity and Auto-Adjust, then learn lock-on quicksteps against a single enemy. Add the one-to-three-hit stamina rule, rally counters and a single reliable firearm parry. Finally, practice L1 transformations so weapon-form changes happen inside movement rather than between attacks. This sequence improves the decisions that make combat feel fast while preserving a clear escape after every exchange.
