Jack Dorsey’s Block cut 931 employees in March 2025, about 8% of its staff, according to TechCrunch’s report of an internal email. That is the “more than 900” reduction in the original headline. It is separate from Block’s February 2026 announcement that more than 4,000 people would be asked to leave or enter consultation as the company reduced its workforce from over 10,000 to just under 6,000.
Are the cuts 900 jobs or more than 4,000?
They refer to two different workforce actions, announced nearly a year apart. The March 2025 figure was a reported layoff count; the February 2026 figure described people asked to leave or enter consultation, not a confirmed total of completed separations.

What happened in March 2025?
On March 25, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Block had laid off 931 employees, roughly 8% of its staff, citing a leaked company message. The publication said the email categorized 391 people as affected for strategy reasons, 460 for performance reasons, and 80 managers as part of a hierarchy change. It also reported that 193 managers were moved into individual-contributor roles; those transfers should not be counted as layoffs.
TechCrunch attributed the explanation to an email from Dorsey, who reportedly said the reduction was not driven by financial reasons and was not intended to replace workers with AI. Those details describe the stated rationale for the 2025 action, not the separate 2026 plan.

What did Block announce in February 2026?
In a shareholder letter filed with the SEC on February 26, 2026, Block CEO Jack Dorsey said the company was reducing its workforce from over 10,000 people to just under 6,000. He wrote that more than 4,000 people were “being asked to leave or entering into consultation.” The phrasing matters: it describes the announced process, not a verified final count of completed departures.
Dorsey framed the move as a change in how Block operates, saying, “The core thesis is simple. Intelligence tools have changed what it means to build and run a company.” The Associated Press reported his further explanation: “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better.” These are management’s reasons for the decision; the cited sources do not independently establish how much AI contributed or whether it was the sole cause.

The Associated Press reported on February 27 that the announcement covered more than 4,000 people, but said it was unclear which employees and locations would be affected. The available reporting does not support a definitive geographic breakdown or a completed separation count.
Why is Block laying off employees?
For the 2025 reduction, the reasons reported from the employee email were strategy, performance, and a management-hierarchy change. For the 2026 reduction, Dorsey presented the plan as an operating-model shift: smaller teams using the company’s intelligence tools could do more. These are different explanations for separate decisions, and the 2026 explanation should be attributed to Block’s leadership rather than stated as a proven causal finding.

Block’s shareholder letter also reported fiscal 2025 gross profit of $10.36 billion, up 17% year over year, and fourth-quarter 2025 gross profit of $2.87 billion, up 24% year over year. These are company-reported results, not evidence on their own of why either workforce action took place.

Calling Block simply a crypto business leaves out much of its business. It is a financial technology and payments company with Square and Cash App, as well as Bitcoin-related activity. The company’s Bitcoin work is relevant context, but it does not make the workforce announcements crypto-only cuts.
