You can reduce ads across your devices, but there is no single switch that removes every ad everywhere. Use a content blocker in a supported browser for web pages; add DNS filtering through a device or home router when you want broader coverage for apps and devices that cannot run browser extensions. Each method has limits, and some ads—including certain search-result, first-party, and video-service ads—may remain.
Which ad-blocking method fits your devices?
Browser blockers and DNS filtering work at different points. A browser content blocker filters requests or page elements within a supported browser. DNS filtering can apply across apps or multiple devices, depending on how it is configured, but it cannot reliably distinguish every ad from the content a service needs to deliver.

| Option | Where it applies | What it can target | Important limits | Setup and provider dependence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Browser content blocker | A supported browser on a particular device | Many third-party ads and trackers; the exact filters depend on the browser and blocker | Some search-result ads and ads served by the site itself may remain; filtering can affect site functionality | Usually configured in that browser; availability varies by browser and platform |
| Built-in browser controls | The browser where the control is enabled | Specific categories such as pop-ups or intrusive ads | These controls are not comprehensive ad blockers | Configured in browser settings; no separate filtering provider is required for the documented controls |
| DNS filtering | Potentially apps and devices using the configured DNS, including multiple devices through a router | Requests to domains included in the filtering service’s rules | May miss ads served from the same domains as content, and blocking a domain can disrupt a service; it is not equivalent to a browser content blocker | Requires configuration on a device or router and may depend on a third-party DNS service |
These options have different coverage and exceptions; the available guidance does not establish comparable success rates. A practical combination is a browser blocker where supported, plus DNS filtering for other devices if broader network coverage is worth the extra configuration.

Try Firefox for iOS’s optional ad blocker
- In Firefox for iOS, open Settings > Browsing > Ad Blocker.
- Turn on the feature if it is available on your device. Mozilla’s support article, last updated August 16, 2026, says the blocker is off by default and being rolled out progressively, so it may not appear for every user.
- Enable remote improvements as well if you want the filter to receive the improvements described by Mozilla.
Mozilla describes the feature as an EasyList-based filter that blocks many third-party ads and trackers, as well as some pop-ups and overlays. It does not block every ad: search-result ads and some advertising served by a site can remain. Treat it as a browser-specific option, not device-wide protection.

Use Safari’s pop-up control for pop-up windows
On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Apps > Safari and enable Block Pop-ups. Apple documents this as a way to block pop-up windows; it does not make Safari a general ad blocker. Avoid interacting with suspicious pop-ups, and use trusted sources for apps.
What can you do in desktop browsers?
Chrome: enable the intrusive-ad safeguard
In Chrome, open Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Intrusive ads. Google’s help documentation says Chrome removes ads on sites that violate Better Ads Standards. This is a safeguard against intrusive formats, not a setting that promises to remove all ads.
Other desktop browsers
Browser content blockers can provide more targeted filtering than a pop-up or intrusive-ad control, but the right extension and installation steps depend on the browser and operating system. The guidance available here does not establish a current, authoritative extension recommendation or a complete Windows or macOS setup procedure, so check the browser maker’s current extension catalog and the blocker’s own compatibility information before installing anything.

How does ad blocking work on Android and in apps?
Browser extensions are not available everywhere
AdBlock’s support material says Chrome on mobile does not support its browser extensions. The same provider describes options for Safari on iOS and Samsung Browser on Android; those are product-specific instructions, not a guarantee that every blocker supports every mobile browser. Its guidance also cautions that network-level filtering may block fewer ads than a dedicated browser tool because DNS filtering has less context about what a page is displaying.
Consider Android Private DNS for broader filtering
Blokada describes Android Private DNS as a way to apply DNS filtering across apps on Wi-Fi and mobile data. The exact controls and behavior can vary by Android version, device maker, network, and app. Follow the instructions for your Android version and DNS provider, and be prepared to disable the setting if an app or site stops working. DNS filtering can extend beyond one browser, but it does not make every app ad-free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can DNS filtering block ads on smart TVs and consoles?
For a smart TV, game console, smart speaker, or other device that cannot run a browser extension or blocker app, DNS filtering through a home router is one possible coverage layer. Blokada’s guide describes router configuration as a way to cover devices such as TVs and consoles. Router menus and supported settings vary, so use the instructions for your specific router rather than assuming a universal path.

Network-wide filtering still cannot guarantee ad-free streaming. If a service delivers ads from the same domains as its video or other content, DNS filtering may be unable to block the ad selectively; blocking the domain could also interfere with playback. The available guidance does not establish exact setup steps or ad-blocking behavior for individual TV platforms.
Does a DNS ad blocker stop YouTube ads?
Do not assume it will. DNS filtering is not a dependable way to selectively remove ads from a video service when ads and content may share delivery infrastructure. More importantly, YouTube states: “When you block YouTube ads, you violate YouTube’s Terms of Service.” Its help page warns that continued ad-blocker use may result in video playback being blocked. The official ad-free option identified by YouTube is YouTube Premium.
Quick Recap
What to check when a blocker causes problems
- A site or app no longer loads: Temporarily turn off the relevant browser filter or DNS setting to see whether it is responsible. If it is, use that blocker or provider’s controls to allow the service rather than assuming every blocked request is an ad.
- Ads remain in search results: Some browser filters do not block search-result ads; Mozilla specifically notes this limit for Firefox for iOS’s optional feature.
- Pop-ups still appear: Safari’s Block Pop-ups setting targets pop-up windows, not every ad format. A page can still display other advertising.
- A streaming service still shows ads: A network-level filter may not be able to separate ads from the service’s content. Router filtering should not be treated as a promise of ad-free video.
- A setting is missing: Firefox for iOS’s optional blocker is progressively rolling out. Check again later if it is not shown; do not assume the feature is available to every user.
