Blizzard says it is revisiting some visuals for the Skyborne, the new faction that PC Gamer describes as a group of High Elves, in World of Warcraft: Forever. The changes aim to keep the faction in line with the game’s original-era look. The “look worse” in the headline is PC Gamer’s playful, positive framing of that shift, not Blizzard’s wording.
What Blizzard is changing
In its October 7, 2026 post, “World of Warcraft: Forever – The Future of Skyborne Visual Updates,” Blizzard Entertainment sets out the goal behind the work: “Our aim has always been to uphold the original WoW era aesthetic, while giving players more choice in how they experience Azeroth.” The post also admits that some ideas the team explored along the way “ultimately didn’t quite meet the consistency and cohesion we are aiming for,” and says Blizzard is revisiting some of those visuals.

HD Skyborne Druid forms
The one concrete example in the post is the High Definition (HD) Skyborne Druid forms. Blizzard says it has:

- removed some of the softness from the models;
- added more detailed fur textures;
- adjusted the color saturation.
Blizzard’s stated concern is that the Skyborne should look like they come from an exotic environment without clashing with the visual language of the other creatures in the game.

The Standard Definition (SD) option
Blizzard also addresses the SD option. Its SD/HD toggle was initially focused on the races from the original World of Warcraft. Blizzard then heard feedback that HD Skyborne characters can look out of place beside SD models and the SD world. In the post’s words: “However, we have heard feedback that the HD Skyborne can be jarring by contrast when placed in the same world as the SD models and world, and we agree.”
As a result, Blizzard says Skyborne SD player characters and SD Druid forms are in development. The post targets early 2027 for them but does not give an exact release date.

Why “consistency” is the point
Blizzard’s argument rests on fit. A faction can look striking on its own and still stand out too much in a world built around older models. The HD changes address that by softening the look and adding texture detail, while the SD track addresses the mismatch between HD Skyborne characters and an SD world. Blizzard frames both moves as ways of making the Skyborne belong in Azeroth as it appears in the SD presentation, not as a separate design direction.

Where the “look worse” headline comes from
The phrase “look worse” belongs to PC Gamer. Its October 7, 2026 report by Tyler Colp, headlined “Blizzard promises to make the blue elves in World of Warcraft: Forever look worse (positive),” describes the Skyborne as a new faction of High Elves and compares their appearance to the Burning Crusade Blood Elves. It also reports that players criticized how polished the new models looked beside older ones. Those points are PC Gamer’s reporting and interpretation.
The Blizzard passages quoted above describe the changes in concrete terms: less softness, more fur detail, adjusted saturation, and consistency with the rest of the world. Whether the revised models look “worse” is a judgment, and it is the one PC Gamer makes.
