Explosions were reported overnight in Addis Ababa on October 1, 2026, as fighting intensified in northern Ethiopia. The Associated Press cited an intelligence official confirming three blasts in three locations, but the cause, casualties and damage were not confirmed. A source linked to an opposition alliance claimed drone strikes; Reuters said it could not immediately verify that claim.
What is known about the blasts in Addis Ababa
The Associated Press reported that an intelligence official confirmed three blasts in three locations overnight. Diplomatic sources and residents also reported explosions. That confirms reports of blasts, not what caused them or what damage they may have caused.
APA, citing sources and witnesses, placed blasts near military headquarters in western Addis Ababa and in the south, including an area witnesses identified as Gotera. It gave an approximate time of 21:30 GMT. These are attributed location reports, not a verified map of impact sites. Reuters, in a report republished by Internazionale, also reported overnight blasts but said diplomatic sources offered little detail.
No casualties or extent of damage had been reported in the accounts reviewed. The Associated Press said it was unclear whether the incident was an attack or training exercises at defense headquarters.

Were the explosions drone strikes?
That remained unconfirmed in the October 1 reporting. An unnamed source linked to the Ethiopian Peoples’ Forces Alliance for Survival told Reuters that the coalition had carried out several drone strikes in Addis Ababa, including against military positions. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the claim.
The reports said the blasts came hours after authorities banned drone flights in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas. The timing does not establish that a drone strike occurred: the ban and the reported explosions are separate facts, and the cause was still unclear.

How the fighting in the north was widening
Al Jazeera, reporting from Afar on October 1, said federal forces had advanced from Amhara into Tigray to within about 40 km (25 miles) of Mekelle. It reported that Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) forces had withdrawn to new positions, some leaders had reportedly left the city, and thousands of civilians had fled amid fears of clashes. Electricity and internet services in the region had been cut, according to the report. These describe conditions reported at that time, not a verified picture of the situation on October 3.
Al Jazeera described the opposition coalition as an alliance of seven armed groups, including the TPLF and groups from Amhara, Afar, Somali and Benishangul-Gumuz. The coalition’s stated aim was to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.

Conflicting accounts of control in Afar
Government forces told Reuters they had retaken Erebti and Abaala. Al Jazeera said that claim was unconfirmed and reported that fighting for the towns was ongoing. It also said the situation of more than 80,000 Afar residents reportedly trapped in the area remained uncertain; that figure is the outlet’s report, not an independently confirmed count.

On October 1, Ethiopia said it would close its embassy in Asmara and ordered 10 Eritrean diplomats to leave within 48 hours. Ethiopia’s Foreign Ministry accused Eritrea of “direct and indirect acts of hostility and belligerence against Ethiopia” and said it remained committed to a “peaceful resolution of disputes” and regional integration in the Horn of Africa, according to Al Jazeera.
