Tokenization can change how an investment is represented, recorded and transferred without changing what the investment holds. For a tokenized money market fund, for example, the token may represent an investor’s fund interest while the fund continues to own short-term securities under its existing strategy. Possible gains in transfer speed, recordkeeping or connections to digital platforms are changes to market plumbing—not proof of higher returns, lower risk or a better fit for your portfolio.
What does tokenization mean for an investment portfolio?
Tokenization uses blockchain records to represent ownership of, or economic exposure to, an asset as a digital token. The token’s meaning depends on the product’s legal structure: it may track an asset’s price and distributions, or it may convey specified ownership rights. A token does not automatically give its holder direct ownership of an underlying security.
For an investor, the practical distinction is between the investment itself and the system used to represent and move an interest in it. A fund’s holdings, objective and strategy are separate from whether investors’ interests are recorded on a conventional system or represented by tokens on a blockchain.
Price exposure is not the same as ownership rights
BlackRock distinguishes tokenized price representations, which are designed to provide economic exposure to price movements and distributions, from tokenized ownership, which can convey beneficial rights such as voting. Those descriptions do not settle the rights of every tokenized product. The governing documents and legal structure determine what a holder actually owns and can do.

What could change—and what may stay the same?
BlackRock says tokenization of a money market fund can support more efficient transfers and recordkeeping, connectivity to digital platforms, programmable workflows, and transfers between approved investors. Such capabilities may affect how fund interests are administered or moved. They do not, by themselves, change the fund’s portfolio, investment objective, risk-return characteristics or suitability for an individual investor.
BlackRock’s explanation puts the distinction plainly: “What’s important to remember is that tokenization doesn’t change the underlying investments held by the fund or the fund’s overall investment strategy.” This statement concerns tokenized money market funds; it should not be treated as a universal description of every tokenized product.
Potential operational capabilities
- Transfers and settlement: a blockchain-based record may enable transfers through digital infrastructure, subject to the product’s rules and any approved-investor or wallet restrictions.
- Recordkeeping: transaction and ownership records may be maintained on-chain, potentially connecting them to other digital systems.
- Programmable workflows: rules can be built into transactions or processes, but the product’s documents, counterparties and applicable rules still govern what is permitted.
- Digital collateral: BlackRock’s COO has described potential changes to collateral management as more assets move on-chain. This is a prospective use, not evidence that tokenized fund shares are accepted as collateral everywhere.
These are possible capabilities, not guaranteed services or measured investor benefits. The sources reviewed do not establish a quantified improvement in portfolio efficiency, a return advantage, or universal availability of these functions.

What does BlackRock’s BUIDL fund show?
The BlackRock USD Institutional Digital Liquidity Fund, known as BUIDL, is a concrete institutional example of a tokenized fund. It helps show that tokenization is being used to represent fund interests, but it does not show that tokenized funds are already common in ordinary household portfolios.
Securitize, BUIDL’s tokenization provider, reported that the fund launched in March 2024, initially on Ethereum, and surpassed $1 billion in assets under management (AUM) in an announcement dated March 13, 2025. That announcement also described deployments on Aptos, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism and Polygon; named the Bank of New York Mellon as cash and securities custodian; and said several digital-asset custodians supported shareholders. These are provider-reported details from that date, not confirmation of current networks or service providers.
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s September 24, 2025 article reported BUIDL AUM of $2.5 billion in its selected-fund dataset, with chart observations through June 2025. That is a historical observation, not a current 2026 figure. Neither this nor Securitize’s earlier milestone should be read as a current AUM figure or as evidence of investor returns.

How might tokenization affect markets over time?
BlackRock COO Rob Goldstein has described possible effects on trading and liquidity networks, collateral management and portfolio construction as more assets move on-chain. He also said: “First, the adoption of digital assets in investor portfolios is still very small. Relative to what the ultimate opportunity is, it’s still very small.” That is Goldstein’s perspective, not a neutral market measurement or a forecast with a stated timetable.
In a September 24, 2025 analysis, Federal Reserve Bank of New York authors discussed three novel uses for tokenized investment funds, including secondary-market circulation and instantaneous liquidity pools. They also noted opacity about how some funds are being used and limited evidence of broader acceptance. Their conclusion was that it remains too early to determine the effect tokenized shares may have on the financial system. The article states that its views are those of its authors and do not necessarily represent the Federal Reserve System.

The implication for an individual portfolio is that possible future market infrastructure should not be mistaken for a current, broadly available portfolio benefit. Adoption, liquidity and the consequences for financial markets remain uncertain.

What should you check before comparing tokenized funds?
Assess the fund and the rights attached to its token, not just the blockchain it uses. Useful comparison points include:
- Underlying assets and strategy: what the fund actually holds and how it is managed.
- Legal rights: whether the token represents price exposure, a fund interest, or specified beneficial ownership rights—and what the governing documents say.
- Eligibility and access: who may invest, which wallets are approved, and whether transfers are restricted.
- Subscriptions, redemptions and transfers: how investors enter or exit, what conditions apply, and whether peer-to-peer transfers are permitted.
- Liquidity and settlement: what arrangements exist in practice; an on-chain record alone does not guarantee that an investor can sell or redeem when desired.
- Technology and custody: which blockchain and interoperability arrangements are used, and who is responsible for custody and records.
- Regulatory setting and actual use: which rules apply and whether use extends beyond crypto-native markets.
Check the current offering documents for the specific product before relying on details about eligibility, transfers, custody or redemption. The provider’s description of a token’s capabilities is not a substitute for understanding the fund’s terms.
What risks does tokenization leave in place?
Tokenization does not remove investment risk. An investor remains exposed to the risks of the underlying assets and fund strategy, as well as any risks created by the token structure and its operating environment. BlackRock has also said that regulation and infrastructure need to develop for the technology to scale.

Securitize’s BUIDL announcement warned that digital assets or tokens using blockchain may be speculative, generally illiquid, subject to limited regulatory certainty and possible market manipulation, and may expose investors to loss of principal. The New York Fed authors’ observations about opacity and uncertain acceptance add a market-wide caveat. The relevance and severity of risks vary by product; wallet access, custody, operational reliability, interoperability and transfer restrictions matter where the product depends on them.
A tokenized format is therefore not, on its own, evidence that an investment is safer, more liquid, more accessible or more profitable. Those judgments require examining the particular fund, its rights and operating arrangements.
