Black Screen Fixes: What to Check on Phones, PCs, Macs and TVs

A black screen can mean a device has lost power, the picture is going to the wrong display, the operating system is stuck, or the screen itself has failed. There is no single reset that fixes every “black screen of death.” First check for signs of power and identify the device; then use the recovery steps for that platform. If a Windows stop code is visible, follow the stop-code path rather than treating it as an ordinary blank screen.

First, work out what is actually black

Before forcing a restart, note what the device is doing. A logo, cursor, sound, vibration, indicator light, warning, or stop code can help distinguish a power problem from a display or startup problem. Also consider whether the screen went black after an update, a new connection, or a drop.

  • No lights, sound, vibration, or other response: Check that the device is connected to power and, if possible, charged. For a TV or external monitor, check its power as well.
  • The device seems to run, but there is no picture: Check brightness if accessible. For an external display, confirm the selected input and inspect or reseat the video connection.
  • A cursor or logo appears, or the screen went blank during startup: The device may be starting up but failing to finish. Use the device-specific steps below rather than assuming the screen is broken.
  • A Windows error or stop code is visible: Record the code and any module name, along with recent hardware or software changes. This is a crash, not simply a blank-screen symptom.
  • The problem began after connecting equipment: Disconnect recent peripherals or, in a TV setup, temporarily bypass an HDMI switch or receiver to isolate the connection.

Start with power and connection checks. Avoid repeatedly forcing resets if a device appears to be running but its display stays blank; persistent symptoms may need manufacturer or authorized service.

Fix a blank screen in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Microsoft describes several possible causes, not a single diagnosis: a blank screen with a cursor can involve a stalled process or driver; a blank screen after sign-in can involve display output or a profile; and a problem after an update can involve an incompatible driver or incomplete update. A blinking cursor may indicate that UEFI/BIOS cannot find a boot device. Use these steps in order, following any on-screen prompts. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

  1. Check power and displays. Plug in the PC if needed, and make sure any external monitor is powered and connected. If you can, test a different cable or monitor and disconnect peripherals that are not needed to start the PC.
  2. Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B. A beep or screen flicker may indicate that the driver reset was received.
  3. Cycle display output. Press Windows + P, press P again, then press Enter to cycle through display modes. If the picture returns, the PC had been sending video to an unexpected display arrangement.
  4. Try the security screen. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If it opens, select Task Manager and restart Windows Explorer if it is listed and not responding.
  5. Force a restart only if needed. Microsoft lists holding the power button for 20 seconds as a force-restart step. Unsaved work may be lost.
  6. Use Recovery if the screen remains blank. From Windows Recovery, try Safe Mode to update or roll back a graphics driver. If the issue began recently, System Restore is another option. Follow the recovery prompts carefully.

If Windows shows a stop code

A visible stop code means Windows encountered a serious problem involving hardware, a driver, or software and may restart unexpectedly. Record the displayed code and module name, if present, before troubleshooting. Use Microsoft’s stop-code and unexpected-restart guidance; the blank-screen steps above are not a substitute for diagnosing the crash.

Restart an iPhone with a black screen

Use the sequence for the specific iPhone model. Apple’s instructions for restarting an unresponsive iPhone distinguish these button combinations:

  • iPhone with Face ID: Quickly press and release Volume Up, then quickly press and release Volume Down. Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears; it may take longer than 10 seconds.
  • iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus: Hold the Side button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
  • iPhone 6s or earlier: Hold the Home button and the Side or Top button together until the Apple logo appears.

If the iPhone will not turn on, Apple advises charging it for one hour and trying again. Its instructions give a shorter charge-and-retry step when the low-charge battery screen appears. If it remains unresponsive, seek Apple service rather than trying a button sequence for another model.

Troubleshoot a black Android phone screen

Android button combinations and Safe Mode steps vary by manufacturer and model. Google recommends a few checks that do not require guessing at a model-specific recovery sequence. Its screen troubleshooting guide advises inspecting the display for cracks or chips, removing a case or screen protector, taking off gloves, removing stickers covering the screen or sensors, and cleaning the screen.

  1. Check charging equipment. If the phone will not turn on, check a compatible charger, cable, charging port, and outlet as described in Google’s charging and power troubleshooting guide.
  2. Try a restart. Google says to hold the power button for about 5–7 seconds as a usual first restart step for a device that will not turn on. For a screen that is not working right, its guidance also suggests holding the power button for about 30 seconds to restart most phones. These are different support scenarios; use the relevant instructions for your symptom.
  3. Check whether the phone is still operating. Call it or use Find Hub. If it rings while the display remains blank, Google recommends contacting an authorized repair center.
  4. For Safe Mode or model-specific recovery, consult the phone maker. Do not apply another manufacturer’s button combination.

Recover a Mac stuck on a blank screen

A black, grey, or blue screen can occur during normal Mac startup. If the Mac is stuck on a blank screen, Apple’s recommended route is to shut it down and, if needed, use macOS Recovery. Follow Apple’s blank-screen startup instructions:

  1. Hold the Mac’s power button for up to 10 seconds to shut it down, then turn it on again.
  2. If it remains blank, start macOS Recovery.
  3. In Recovery, open Disk Utility and run a repair on the startup disk, then restart the Mac.
  4. If the blank screen persists, start Recovery again and reinstall macOS.

If Recovery will not start, Apple says that a Mac with Apple silicon or the Apple T2 Security Chip may need a firmware revive or restore. For an external display, check the display itself and its connection. Continued blankness may require service.

Fix a black screen on a TV or HDMI-connected streamer

A TV’s black screen or “no signal” message can come from the input, cable, connected device, or equipment between the device and TV. Check the selected TV input and reseat the existing HDMI cable before considering a replacement. The exact steps below apply to Apple TV and Chromecast scenarios, not every TV or streaming device.

Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD

  1. Unplug and reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
  2. Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by Apple TV. Try another TV HDMI port or a different cable if the picture remains absent.
  3. If a switch or AV receiver is in the path, connect Apple TV directly to the TV to isolate that equipment.
  4. Match the cable to the HDMI version: Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.1 and a Premium High Speed HDMI cable for HDMI 2.0.
  5. Check Apple’s Apple TV black-screen and power troubleshooting for its remote-button resolution reset and power-cord checks. If the issue persists, service may be needed.

Chromecast

  1. Make sure Chromecast is powered directly with its supplied cable and adapter, and set the TV to the matching HDMI input.
  2. Unplug Chromecast’s power for one minute, then reconnect it to reboot.
  3. If the screen is still black, remove other HDMI devices and power-cycle the TV. Try another HDMI input or display, and check that the cable fits securely.
  4. Check for firmware updates. For an applicable HDCP error, check the connection among the Chromecast, TV, and any receiver.

These steps follow Google’s Chromecast no-signal and black-screen guidance; they should not be assumed to apply to every streamer.

When to stop troubleshooting

Arrange manufacturer or authorized service if the screen stays blank even though the device appears to be running, if the phone rings but its display does not work, or if the platform’s recovery steps fail. A drop, visible screen damage, or a persistent display fault can point to a hardware problem that a restart or cable change will not resolve. For unresolved Windows stop codes, retain the code and note recent hardware or software changes to help with diagnosis.
