The covers are designed for specific slim model groups: CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. That is a compatibility statement, not a blanket promise that the covers fit every PS5 generation. Older, non-slim consoles should not be assumed to accept them. Check the model number printed on your console before ordering.

Once compatible covers are installed, the console’s color changes while the underlying edition remains the same. A Midnight Black cover does not add a disc drive, increase storage, alter cooling hardware or create a faster performance profile. The official materials reviewed describe appearance and model compatibility, not a performance effect from the cover color.
The real choice: disc console or Digital Edition
PlayStation describes its lineup as a choice between Blu-ray Disc and all-digital consoles. The current US listings reviewed identify two relevant configurations:

These are manufacturer-listed capacities. Usable space is lower because the system reserves part of the SSD for system software and other functions, and the available amount can vary. The figures should therefore be treated as advertised capacity, not the free space you will see after setup.
What the 1 TB disc model can do
The 1 TB console includes a disc drive. It can run PS5 games on supported Blu-ray discs, play supported PS4 game discs, and download digital games and applications. Its drive also provides compatible Blu-ray and DVD playback. A disc-based game may still require an internet connection for updates or other online features, but the console has the hardware needed to read the disc.
Choosing this model also avoids a future drive purchase. If your collection includes boxed games, used games, borrowed discs or movie discs, the built-in drive is the straightforward option.
What the 825 GB Digital Edition can do
The Digital Edition has no optical drive. Games are obtained as downloads from PlayStation Store, so you need a PlayStation account and an internet connection for purchases and downloads. You can still use online multiplayer, streaming applications and other digital software, subject to each service’s requirements.
Digital does not necessarily mean permanently disc-free on a compatible slim model. Sony states that a separately sold drive can be added to compatible Digital Edition slim consoles. Internet access is required to pair the drive during setup. Verify the exact model group and the local accessory listing before buying; compatibility is not established for every PS5 generation.

Nothing in the current official listings indicates that Midnight Black covers change CPU or GPU performance, resolution targets, loading behavior, storage speed or supported games. The meaningful differences are the console edition, included drive and listed capacity.

Do not treat the color as a cooling upgrade or a performance mode. The official information identifies the black item as a cover accessory and gives its compatible slim model groups; it does not claim lower temperatures, higher clock speeds or quieter operation. If two consoles are the same edition and model family, their color should not be used as a technical differentiator.
Storage: 1 TB versus 825 GB
The disc console is listed with 1 TB, while the Digital Edition is listed with 825 GB. The nominal difference is 175 GB, but neither figure equals the free space available for games. System software and other reserved functions consume part of the SSD, and the usable total can vary by software version and system configuration.
Storage affects both editions, but it is especially visible on a Digital Edition because every game is installed from a download. A disc does not eliminate installation requirements: many disc games install data to the SSD and may receive substantial updates. The disc model’s advantage is access to physical media, not unlimited local storage.
When comparing listings, use the capacity printed for that exact region and model. Do not combine the US product capacities with prices or bundles from another market as if they were one package.
Which PS5 should you buy?
Choose the 1 TB disc console when you:
- Own physical PS5 games or expect to buy boxed copies.
- Want to play supported PS4 games from discs.
- Use Blu-ray or DVD movies.
- Buy used, borrowed or giftable physical games.
- Want disc access without purchasing and installing an add-on drive.
- Prefer the higher listed storage capacity.

Choose the 825 GB Digital Edition when you:
- Plan to obtain games digitally through PlayStation Store.
- Do not own physical PS5 or supported PS4 discs.

- Prefer a disc-free setup and accept the lower listed capacity.
- Are comfortable paying separately for a drive if you later decide you need one.
Digital purchases are tied to your account and depend on access to your account and an internet connection for downloading. A digital-first buyer should also plan for storage management, because installed downloads occupy the console’s internal SSD.
Choose Midnight Black covers when appearance is the priority
Buy the covers for a compatible PS5 Slim if you want a black exterior while keeping the same console edition. Covers make sense when you already own a compatible slim console or have selected one and want to change its appearance.
They do not turn a Digital Edition into a disc model, change 825 GB into 1 TB, or make an older console compatible. Confirm that the label on your console belongs to the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim groups named by the official listing.

A practical decision framework
Use these questions in order rather than starting with color:
- Will you use discs? If yes, select the 1 TB console with the built-in drive. If no, continue.
- Do you need Blu-ray or DVD playback? If yes, select the disc console. If no, continue.
- Is the 825 GB Digital Edition’s capacity acceptable? Remember that usable space is lower after system reservations. If yes, the Digital Edition fits a download-only plan.
- Could you need discs later? If the console is a compatible CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim Digital Edition, an add-on drive is an option, but it is a separate purchase and requires online pairing. If preserving flexibility matters more than a disc-free setup, buy the 1 TB disc model from the start.

Installing and using Midnight Black covers

Adding a disc drive to a compatible Digital Edition
A compatible slim Digital Edition can be converted to include disc access with a separately sold drive. The process has two distinct parts: physically fitting the drive and pairing it with the console.
- Verify that the console is a supported CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 slim model and that the drive listing matches it.
- Shut down the console and disconnect power before fitting the drive, following the drive’s supplied instructions.
- Reconnect the console and complete the on-screen setup instructions.
- Allow internet access when prompted. Sony states that an internet connection is required to pair the drive during setup.
- Insert a supported disc and confirm that the console recognizes it before disposing of the packaging or returning the accessory.
The add-on drive is not a color accessory and is not included with the Digital Edition. Budget for the accessory separately, and check the current local price and stock because the official listings used for this comparison do not establish a single worldwide price.
Cost and regional listing cautions
No single current price should be assumed from this comparison. The console information comes from US PlayStation listings, while the Midnight Black cover compatibility information comes from a UK accessory listing. Currency, taxes, bundles, promotions and availability can change independently.
Compare the complete local package:

Mistake: assuming every PS5 accepts the covers

Is the 1 TB model always the better value?
It is the better functional match for disc users because the drive is included and the listed capacity is higher. A download-only buyer may reasonably prefer the Digital Edition. The right value depends on whether you would otherwise buy an add-on drive or need physical media.
Can a Digital Edition play a disc after I add the drive?
