For a manageable route into it, use Directed Mode’s objectives to learn the map, collect Salvage as you move, and build up your weapons before attempting the Staff of Ice ritual. Activision’s official guide covers the layout, early rounds and preparation; it is not a complete Easter egg or Main Quest walkthrough.
What this guide covers
The Tomb arrived with Season 02, and its Main Quest went live on January 28, 2025. The steps below focus on getting oriented, surviving early progression and preparing for the Staff of Ice. Activision’s map guide explicitly limits its scope: it does not show every Easter egg or walk through the full Main Quest.

Choose a mode to learn the map
Directed Mode
Directed Mode supplies milestone objectives and a more controlled pace through the map. Follow those prompts as an introduction to the layout and progression rather than trying to explore every route at once.

Standard Mode
Standard Mode is the open-ended map experience. It gives you less objective-led pacing, so use the same landmarks and upgrade priorities while deciding your own route.
Navigate The Tomb efficiently
- Use the Dark Aether Nexus portal: Portals can shorten travel between distant parts of the map. Check whether a portal route is useful before retracing your steps on foot.
- Read the stone maps: Maps at major points of interest help you locate the Mystery Box and Pack-a-Punch.
- Collect Salvage as you travel: Break bright purple Aether Crystals for likely Salvage or equipment drops. In the Dark Aether, destroy green and purple fungi for another suggested Salvage source.
Build up before attempting the Staff of Ice ritual
Activision recommends reaching at least Pack-a-Punch level one and Rare (blue) rarity on a main weapon before starting the Staff ritual. The guide also suggests Jugger-Nog for survivability and Speed Cola to reduce vulnerability while reloading. Treat these as the official guide’s recommendations, not guarantees of success.

The first ten rounds are framed as the basic progression toward Pack-a-Punch and a first weapon upgrade. Keep improving your weapon and armor as you advance rather than treating the first upgrade as the end of preparation.

What the Staff of Ice does
The Staff of Ice is The Tomb’s Wonder Weapon. Activision describes it as able to slow and freeze enemies, deliver a more powerful area attack, and revive a teammate with a precision restorative blast. Its crowd-control and revival functions make it relevant beyond simply dealing damage.

How the official guide describes the staff steps
The map guide outlines two sequences for revealing and collecting the staff components. It describes using Aetheric Lanterns to reveal wall runes, then activating the runes in numerical order. These directions are a high-level account of the guide’s ritual preparation, not a full step-by-step Main Quest walkthrough.

- Arrow Traps: These fire damaging energy darts, so avoid lingering in their path.
- Aetheric Lanterns: They can be used to rain Aetheric fire on enemies; the guide also describes their role in revealing runes for the staff sequence.
Exploration also turns up audio logs, documents and artifacts tied to the map’s lore.

Patch history and quest expectations
Activision’s Season 03 patch notes recorded fixes for several Tomb issues, including a rare failure for the Monocle to spawn at the Shock Mimic’s location during the Wonder Weapon Quest, zombies damaging the Staff of Ice from behind the Plinth, jittery zombie attacks on the Staff, and missing sections of the Vermin Trial barrier. These are historical fixes from 2025; they do not establish that every current interaction is free of bugs.
