Analyst estimates suggest about 11.2 million combined PlayStation units and roughly $435 million in revenue, while both games reached Circana’s US PlayStation top 10 by weekly active users for the week ending July 11, 2026.
That supports analyst Rhys Elliott’s description of “pent-up demand,” but it does not show that Activision officially announced a strategy to recreate the “good old days.” The phrase describes the audience response, not a confirmed corporate plan.

What launched on PS4 and PS5?
Treyarch announced on June 17, 2026: “It’s official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at Iron Galaxy.” A follow-up confirmed that “Both will include Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies.”
Both games released digitally on July 9, 2026 as PS4/PS5 products. They are designed to make the original 2010 and 2012 games playable on current PlayStation hardware without keeping a PS3 connected.

Did the ports actually sell millions?
The most specific sales figures are estimates from analyst Rhys Elliott of Alinea, reported by GameSpot—not figures publicly reported by Activision. Elliott estimated 8.2 million PlayStation units for Black Ops II and 3.0 million for Black Ops, or approximately $435 million in combined revenue.
Those numbers should be read as an estimate of PlayStation performance, not audited worldwide sales. They also do not establish how much revenue came from the base games versus downloadable content. Elliott described the response as: “That pent-up demand DETONATED.”

There is a separate engagement signal. Circana placed both ports in the US PlayStation top 10 by total weekly active users for the week ending July 11, 2026. Weekly active users measure people playing during that period; they are not the same as units sold.

Why was demand “pent-up”?
A long-standing PlayStation catalog gap
Before these releases, PlayStation owners did not have native PS4 or PS5 editions of the first two Black Ops games. Xbox players had backward-compatible access, so the new ports addressed a gap that was especially visible on PlayStation. Digital availability also removes the practical barriers of finding a used PS3 copy, connecting older hardware and maintaining a legacy online setup.

Nostalgia plus current-console convenience
The two games arrived from a period many players regard as a high point for the series. Putting their original campaigns, multiplayer and Zombies modes on a current console lets returning players revisit familiar content while giving newer players a straightforward way to try it.
What remains interpretation
Some coverage connects the response to frustration with newer live-service design. That is a plausible explanation, not a measured finding in the available sales data. The evidence establishes strong interest in these ports; it does not prove that players broadly rejected every newer design or that Activision has committed to a specific retro-focused roadmap.

Are these remasters or just ports?
They are close-to-original ports with resolution improvements, not comprehensive remasters. Buyers should expect the original game structure and content rather than rebuilt assets, redesigned systems or a modernized feature set comparable to a full remake.
That limited scope may be part of the commercial lesson. The ports did not need a remake-sized feature list to sell; they needed to make a beloved catalog gap purchasable on current PlayStation hardware.

What buyers get—and what they do not
Included
- The original single-player Campaign in each game.
- The original Multiplayer mode in each game.
- The original Zombies mode in each game.
- Digital access on PS4 and PS5 with resolution improvements over the legacy presentation.
Important limitations
- They are not full visual or systems remasters.
- Input-lag complaints have been reported.
- Legacy exploits and cheating can affect online matches.
- Separate downloadable content purchases can divide the matchmaking pool.
- PS4 and PS5 populations may be fragmented, depending on how matchmaking is implemented.
- Online multiplayer does not support cross-platform play with non-PlayStation systems.
Do PS4 and PS5 players share multiplayer?
The products are sold for both PS4 and PS5, but the published listing information does not confirm that every PS4 and PS5 player enters the same matchmaking pool. Do not assume cross-generation lobby behavior until the in-game menus or an official support notice specify it.
What is explicit is the platform boundary: the listing says cross-platform multiplayer with non-PlayStation platforms is unsupported. Online play also requires an active PS Plus subscription. Downloadable content can further affect who can join a particular playlist or map rotation.
What this means for Activision’s next moves
The ports demonstrate that older premium releases can still attract substantial attention when they solve a clear platform-access problem. They also give Activision a low-risk way to test demand for legacy catalogs without committing to a full remake.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHowever, the available evidence stops short of proving a company-wide return to an earlier design philosophy. Activision has not been shown to have formally adopted “good old days” as a strategy, and analyst estimates cannot reveal whether future projects will be ports, remasters, sequels or live-service titles.
Quick Recap
Should you buy them?
| Your priority | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Replay the original Campaign or Zombies modes on a current PlayStation | The ports provide those modes digitally on PS4 and PS5. |
| A modernized visual remake | Look elsewhere; these are close-to-original releases with resolution improvements. |
| Competitive online play with modern protections | Consider reported input-lag, exploits, cheating and population-fragmentation concerns. |
| Playing with friends on Xbox or PC | Not supported because non-PlayStation cross-platform multiplayer is unavailable. |
| Lowest total cost | Factor in the $39.99 pre-discount price for Black Ops, any optional Season Pass or DLC, and PS Plus for online play. |
