The latest dividend terms located for this article are $0.703 per share quarterly, or $2.812 annualized, while the company’s 2025 payout ratio was 68%—above its stated 55%–65% target. Without a current share price, valuation, and confirmed merger status, a price-sensitive “buy now” verdict is not supported.
What Black Hills Corporation does
Black Hills Corporation is a regulated electric and natural-gas utility headquartered in Rapid City, South Dakota. It serves customers in Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. In January 2026, the company described its customer base as approximately 1.35 million; its investor-relations landing page later showed 1.37 million, so any customer count should be tied to a date. Black Hills Corporation investor relations
As a regulated utility, Black Hills’ results depend on factors including allowed rates, customer and load growth, capital investment, financing costs, weather, and regulatory decisions. That profile can offer relatively predictable demand, but does not remove operating, financing, or regulatory risk. The company’s annual filing details its business and risk factors in its SEC filings.
How strong is Black Hills’ dividend record?
Black Hills announced its 56th consecutive annual dividend increase in January 2026. Separately, it said its predecessor had paid annual dividends for 84 consecutive years, dating back to February 1942. The first figure counts years in which the dividend rose; the second counts years in which a dividend was paid. They describe different histories, not competing versions of the same streak. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K records 55 consecutive annual increases through 2025; the January 2026 increase brought the streak to 56. January 23, 2026 dividend announcement

No later declaration was established here, so $2.812 is the latest annualized rate located, not a guarantee of future payments. Second-quarter 2026 Form 10-Q

| Year | Payout ratio | Dividends paid | Dividend per share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 64% | $168.1 million | $2.50 |
| 2024 | 66% | $182.3 million | $2.60 |
| 2025 | 68% | $197.9 million | $2.70 |
The 2025 payout ratio was three percentage points above the top of the company’s target range. The $2.70 per-share figure is what was paid for 2025; it should not be confused with the $2.812 annualized rate following the 2026 increase. A long record of increases is evidence of past policy, not proof that future payments are risk-free.
Black Hills reported 2025 diluted GAAP earnings per share of $3.98 and adjusted earnings per share of $4.10. Adjusted EPS is a non-GAAP measure. For 2026, management initiated adjusted EPS guidance of $4.25–$4.45 and reaffirmed that range in its August 5 release. The outlook assumes, among other things, normal weather and constructive, timely regulatory outcomes; it is management’s estimate rather than a guarantee. 2025 results release August 5, 2026 second-quarter results release

How secure is the dividend?
The history and payout ratio are useful starting points, but neither settles dividend safety. Black Hills says future dividends remain at the board’s discretion and depend on operating results, financial position, cash flows, reinvestment opportunities, and other considerations. Its second-quarter filing also identifies funds from operations, capital expenditures, revolving-credit-facility restrictions, and business prospects. Statutory requirements, subsidiary-level regulatory limits, and bond covenants can also affect distributions.
- What helps: Regulated utility operations and a long history of annual increases provide context for the company’s dividend policy.
- What warrants attention: The latest full-year payout ratio located, 68% for 2025, exceeded the company’s 55%–65% target. Utility investment needs and financing costs can compete with dividend growth for cash.
- What to monitor: Earnings and cash generation, capital spending, regulatory outcomes, debt and financing conditions, and subsequent board declarations.
Growth plans: opportunities, not yet-earned returns
Black Hills has pointed to regulated-system investment, rate reviews, transmission expansion, generation projects, and large-load demand as potential sources of growth. The figures below are company-reported plans or developments, not proof that the associated earnings have already materialized.

In August, the company reported progress toward definitive agreements for a prospective 1.8 GW Wyoming data-center project. The release did not establish that the prospective project was contracted, built, or producing earnings.
- Rates and system work: The company said it completed three rate reviews during 2025 representing more than $52 million in new annual revenue. Rate outcomes and their timing remain subject to regulatory processes.
- Infrastructure and demand: The 2025 results release cited four new Wyoming Electric peak-load records, a 260-mile transmission expansion, and the Lange II 99 MW generation project. These dated milestones and plans do not eliminate construction, customer, regulatory, or financing risks.

Black Hills and NorthWestern Energy announced an all-stock merger and sought approvals in multiple jurisdictions. Black Hills’ August 5, 2026 release said the transaction was on track but still pending Montana approval, described as the final closing condition at that time. Can you call BKH a buy now?
The dividend record and operating plans may interest income-oriented investors, but a sound “buy now” judgment also requires the share price and valuation on the date of the decision. Those data were not established here. The current yield cannot be stated without a dated share price: divide the latest confirmed annual dividend rate by the share price on the same date. A useful comparison with other utility shares would also use same-date yields and valuation, payout and cash-flow coverage, capital spending and financing needs, regulatory exposure, dividend-growth history, and material merger or large-customer risks. No peer figures are established here, so there is no supported ranking.
Before acting, check a current quote, compare BKH’s valuation with its own history and utility peers using the same date, and confirm the latest dividend declaration and merger disclosures. The dividend streak is a notable record; it is not a substitute for those checks.
