Black Girls Do Engineer Corp. (BGDE), a Houston-based nonprofit founded by chemical engineer Kara Branch in 2019, says it aims to provide STEM access, awareness and advocacy to 2 million Black-American girls and young women, roughly ages 6 to 21, by 2050. The goal encourages STEM-career choices; it is not evidence that 2 million participants will become professional engineers.
That distinction matters because engineering is one part of STEM, while BGDE’s programs also introduce students to computing, medicine, energy, aerospace and other technical fields.

What does “2 million” actually mean?
The headline phrase “2 million Black, female engineers” is shorthand that can overstate the documented objective. The available descriptions support a pipeline and access goal, not a forecast or guarantee of 2 million engineering graduates or employees.
| Stage | What it could mean | What is publicly established |
|---|---|---|
| Exposure | Meeting STEM professionals or trying a technical activity | Clearly part of BGDE’s model |
| Participation | Attending a workshop, mentoring session or chapter activity | Reported, although the counting method is not specified |
| Education | Persisting through school, college or technical training | College guidance and mentoring are described |
| Career choice | Choosing engineering or another STEM field | Encouraged by the mission, but not measured in the cited reports |
| Professional outcome | Graduating and working as an engineer | Not established for the 2-million target |
It is also unclear whether “reached” means direct participants only or includes online audiences, events and advocacy. BGDE has not publicly documented a year-by-year pathway to 2050 in the sources available for this article.
Why Kara Branch created BGDE
Branch has said that her experience as a Black woman in chemical engineering shaped the organization. She described pressure to alter parts of herself to fit engineering workplaces and wanted her daughters and other Black girls to encounter a more supportive environment.

Her daughter’s interest in becoming a software engineer provided another immediate catalyst. Branch saw a need for role models, hands-on technical experiences and sustained encouragement rather than occasional demonstrations. She later left Intel to work full-time on BGDE, according to EE Times.
How the program works
BGDE combines technical activities with the social and academic support that often determines whether interest lasts.
Hands-on STEM experiences
- Coding instruction and robot-code projects.
- Robotics and Lego-based engineering challenges.
- Workshops exposing students to AI, energy, aerospace, medicine, audiovisual production and engineering.
- Presentations and interactions with working STEM professionals.
Career and college preparation
- College visits and guidance on career choices.
- Workplace shadowing and professional exposure.
- Interview and career-fair preparation.
- Leadership, life-skills and career-readiness training.
- Mentoring and scholarship support.
- College-signing celebrations that recognize students’ next steps.
For college students, the support is described as more individualized. Kayla Hooks, a Prairie View A&M University computer-science student, told EE Times that mentors called or texted every few weeks and connected her with women working in computer engineering, environmental work and NASA-related fields.
What scale had BGDE reached?
EE Times reported the following figures on February 28, 2024. They are historical snapshots, not verified totals for 2026:

The available reporting does not establish a current chapter list, 2026 enrollment, repeat-participation rate or the number of participants who later entered engineering or another STEM occupation.
Why representation and retention matter
BGDE’s rationale goes beyond adding names to a workforce tally. Early exposure can make technical careers imaginable; role models can show what those careers look like; and mentors can help students navigate advanced courses, college applications, internships and recruiting. A sense of belonging also affects whether people stay in a field after entering it.
BGDE’s public materials, as quoted by EE Times, say women of color make up less than 5% of the STEM workforce. That figure should be understood as the organization’s claim unless independently verified. GovTech also cited a 2015 National Center for Education Statistics figure that 2.5% of African American women attending colleges or universities earned STEM-related degrees. It is historical, and the definition and denominator should be checked before treating it as a current national measure.
The scale challenge behind a 2050 target
Moving from approximately 3,000 people served by early 2024 to 2 million by 2050 would require sustained expansion over decades. The arithmetic alone does not determine feasibility; the model would need enough chapters, instructors, mentors, funding and partnerships to deliver both broad exposure and deeper support.

Reach versus depth
Online events and large workshops can reach many students efficiently. Frequent mentoring, college advising and career preparation require considerably more staff time per participant.
Interest versus persistence
A robotics session can spark curiosity, but it does not demonstrate completion of advanced mathematics, an engineering degree or employment. A credible evaluation would track repeat attendance, STEM-course enrollment, college entry, degree completion, internships, jobs and retention.
National growth versus local trust
Early reporting centered on Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans and online programming, with plans for additional U.S. cities. Expansion can increase access, while local chapters may better understand transportation, schools, families and community needs.

- The sources do not establish how many participants choose an engineering major or complete an engineering degree.
- Secondary reports have mentioned “100% college success” and “100% job placement,” but no methodology or denominator is supplied in the available material; those claims should not be treated as verified outcomes.
- The geographic scope of the 2-million target is not clearly defined beyond U.S.-centered descriptions.
- Funding, staffing and mentor capacity will be decisive for long-term delivery, but a complete 2050 operating plan is not publicly documented in the cited coverage.
These are measurement questions, not proof that the ambition is impossible. They determine how readers should interpret progress.
How BGDE compares with a separate Black-engineer goal
The National Society of Black Engineers reported 6,131 new Black engineers in 2022 and described that figure as 61% of its 10K Goal. That is a degree-recipient measure, whereas BGDE’s objective is a youth pipeline centered on access, awareness and career choice. The numbers should not be added together or treated as equivalent outcomes.
Bottom line
Black Girls Do Engineer is the group behind the widely repeated 2-million-by-2050 ambition. Its documented work pairs coding and robotics with mentors, college guidance, professional exposure and scholarships. The most accurate reading is that BGDE wants to reach 2 million Black girls and young women with pathways into STEM—not that it has promised, or demonstrated, 2 million professional engineers. Whether the goal becomes a measurable career pipeline will depend on transparent definitions, sustained expansion and long-term tracking from first workshop to education and employment.
