1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYes—some Bitcoin ASICs can become unprofitable after the next difficulty adjustment, but the increase alone does not determine your result. Your outcome depends on the machine’s measured wall power, electricity tariff, pool and hosting fees, uptime, cooling overhead, and the Bitcoin price and transaction fees used in the revenue estimate.
What the next Bitcoin difficulty adjustment changes
Bitcoin recalculates mining difficulty every 2,016 blocks, targeting an average two-week interval. The protocol compares timestamps from the first and last blocks in that period. If blocks were found faster than two weeks, difficulty rises; if they were slower, difficulty falls, subject to protocol limits.

A higher difficulty does not reduce the block subsidy directly. Instead, miners must perform more hashing work, on average, to earn the same statistical share of block rewards. If the Bitcoin price, 3.125 BTC subsidy and transaction-fee conditions stay unchanged, expected revenue per unit of hashrate falls by approximately the same proportion as the difficulty increase.
What the current numbers imply
A 15 October 2026 calculation from Satoshi Gazette put expected mining revenue at 47.62 satoshis per terahash per second per day at a network difficulty of 132.716 trillion. The calculation used the 3.125 BTC block subsidy and fees from the preceding 144 blocks. This is an expected network rate, not a guaranteed payout from a mining pool: luck, pool accounting, fees and downtime affect what an individual account receives.

Binance News cited a near-term estimate of a 5.68% difficulty increase around 16 October 2026. That number is a forecast and can change as additional blocks are found. If it occurred with every other variable fixed, expected revenue per TH/s would fall by roughly 5.68% in the simple sensitivity calculation (the exact inverse relationship is slightly different).
How to calculate whether your rig still covers its costs
Use your actual operating figures rather than hashrate alone. The core calculation is:
operating margin = daily mining revenue − pool and hosting fees − daily electricity cost − cooling and other overhead

1. Measure wall power
Read the miner’s consumption at the outlet with a meter designed for continuous, high-load use. Manufacturer figures are typical values; voltage, firmware, ambient temperature and machine condition can move the real number.
2. Convert power into a daily electricity bill
Convert watts to kilowatts, multiply by 24 hours and then by your all-in tariff:
daily electricity cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × 24 × price per kWh

Include demand charges or other utility fees when they apply. Cooling power belongs in the calculation if it is attributable to the miner. A hosted machine also needs its hosting charge added separately.

3. Estimate post-adjustment revenue
Start with a current expected rate from your pool or calculator, then reduce it for the forecast difficulty change. Subtract pool fees, rejected-share effects and the portion of time the rig is unavailable. Do not treat a temporary high-fee period or a single lucky payout as a permanent rate.
4. Recalculate after the adjustment
When the network actually retargets, replace the forecast with the published difficulty and update the Bitcoin price, fee environment and your tariff. A rig that is marginal before the retarget can cross below zero even when the change looks small.

Concrete benchmark: a 200 TH/s ASIC
Bitmain lists the Antminer S21 as a SHA-256 machine rated at 200 TH/s, with typical wall power of 3,500 watts and efficiency of 17.5 joules per terahash at 25°C. Those are specification values, not a promise that every installed unit will match them.
| Item | Calculation or specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hashrate | 200 TH/s | Determines the machine’s share of expected network work. |
| Wall power | 3,500 W typical | Equivalent to about 84 kWh for 24 hours at that draw. |
| Efficiency | 17.5 J/TH at 25°C | Lower J/TH generally leaves more room for electricity and overhead. |
| Algorithm | SHA-256 | Matches Bitcoin’s proof-of-work algorithm. |
For example, at a tariff of $0.08 per kWh, 84 kWh would cost about $6.72 per day before cooling, pool fees, hosting or downtime. Compare that bill with the machine’s expected BTC revenue after the next difficulty change; the network rate alone cannot establish profitability without a BTC price.
Why a small efficiency gap can decide the result
Binance News used an illustrative case involving a 20 J/TH machine and electricity priced at $0.08 per kWh. Under its projected adjustment, the example moved from a $1.37 daily electricity cushion to an approximately $0.77 daily shortfall per PH/s, with other assumptions held constant. This is a sensitivity example, not a universal break-even threshold: a different Bitcoin price, fee rate, tariff, machine efficiency or forecast difficulty produces a different answer.

When comparing machines, rank them on the complete operating picture:
- J/TH efficiency and measured wall draw
- Local all-in electricity price
- Pool fee and payout method
- Hosting charge, if applicable
- Expected uptime and repair delays
- Cooling load and facility overhead
- Capital cost and the time needed to recover it
A newer, more efficient ASIC can remain above its power cost at a tariff that makes an older unit power-negative. That advantage is not permanent; every material difficulty, Bitcoin-price or fee change requires a fresh calculation.
A practical shutdown decision
- Record the miner’s actual wattage at the wall over a representative operating period.
- Apply the utility’s complete per-kWh rate and add cooling, pool, hosting and other recurring charges.
- Use a conservative expected payout rather than the best recent day.
- Model the forecast difficulty change, then rerun the calculation with the actual retarget once published.
- Compare the resulting margin with repair risk and the value of keeping the machine available for a possible price or fee recovery.
Shut down or relocate a rig when its expected contribution is persistently negative after all variable costs and there is no realistic operating reason to keep paying for the loss. If the margin is only slightly positive, set a review trigger for the next difficulty change or a specified electricity-price threshold instead of assuming the result will hold.

Quick Recap
Limits of any pre-adjustment profitability estimate
- The 5.68% figure is an estimate, not the final network retarget.
- Pool payouts vary from the network’s statistical expectation.
- Bitcoin’s market price and transaction fees can move while difficulty is unchanged.
- Published power and hashrate figures are typical; temperature, voltage and firmware affect field performance.
- No general calculation can guarantee a post-adjustment result for a particular miner without that miner’s tariff, measured draw, fees and uptime.
