Bitcoin vs. Stablecoins: Which Holds Value Better During Market Volatility?

For a short-term goal of keeping a nominal U.S.-dollar balance steady during crypto-market turbulence, a well-backed USD stablecoin is generally a closer fit than Bitcoin. Bitcoin has no price peg and can move sharply. A stablecoin is designed to track a reference asset, but its peg, reserves, redemption process, issuer, banking relationships and blockchain access can all fail under stress. Neither asset is a guaranteed way to preserve purchasing power or local-currency value.

Start by defining “holding value”

The answer changes depending on what you are trying to preserve. “Value” can mean at least three different things:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • A nominal USD amount for days or months: You want 1,000 units to remain close to $1,000 in dollar terms.
  • Your home-currency balance: You live outside the United States and care about euros, pounds, yen or another currency rather than USD.
  • Purchasing power over years: You want an asset whose value keeps pace with the goods and services you may buy.

Bitcoin and a USD stablecoin answer the first question differently, and neither automatically answers the second or third. A stablecoin can reduce exposure to Bitcoin’s market swings while exposing a non-USD holder to movements in the dollar exchange rate. A dollar that remains nominally one dollar can still buy less when U.S. prices rise.

The holding period also matters. A trading balance needed next week is not the same decision as a multi-year investment. The available evidence does not establish a universally best long-term asset or predict future returns for either one.

How Bitcoin and stablecoins are designed to hold value

Bitcoin: market value without a peg

Bitcoin has no target exchange rate against the dollar or any other currency. Its price is set by market trading, and holders bear the full effect of supply-and-demand changes. Scarcity arguments, adoption expectations and previous gains do not turn it into a stable short-term cash substitute.

The European Central Bank’s May 2025 analysis states that “Bitcoin prices remain highly volatile, as do the prices of other crypto-assets (with the exception of stablecoins).” The same analysis notes that stablecoins cannot guarantee their peg at all times, so the comparison is about relative design and observed behavior, not a promise.

Bitcoin’s market capitalization increased by more than 120% during 2024, according to the ECB’s 2025 report. That is evidence of a large historical move, not a forecast and not proof that Bitcoin reliably preserves a balance over a short horizon.

The European Systemic Risk Board reported an annualized Bitcoin-volatility interquartile range of roughly 44% to 70%. Its chart uses a 21-day rolling standard deviation annualized by the square root of the number of working days in a year, with observations from 1 January 2019 through 13 August 2025. This methodology-dependent historical range illustrates why a balance intended to remain stable can change substantially before you need to spend it.

Stablecoins: a reference-asset target

The SEC Division of Corporation Finance’s 4 April 2025 statement defines stablecoins broadly as crypto-assets intended to maintain value relative to a reference asset. Some use reserves; others use algorithms that adjust supply. Their risks differ significantly according to the stabilization mechanism and how reserves are maintained.

The SEC staff used a narrower term, “Covered Stablecoins,” for a particular design: a USD reference, one-for-one issuance and redemption, low-risk and readily liquid reserve assets at least equal to redemption value, and a fixed-price mint-and-redeem arrangement. In that defined context, the statement says: “Through this fixed-price, unlimited mint-redeem structure, the market price of a Covered Stablecoin is likely to remain stable relative to USD.” That is a description of a structure, not a government guarantee, insurance promise or endorsement of every token using the word stablecoin.

Even a reserve-backed token can trade above or below its target on exchanges. The market price and the issuer’s redemption terms are separate. Direct redemption may be available only to designated intermediaries, leaving other holders dependent on an exchange, broker, wallet provider or another intermediary.

Bitcoin versus a USD stablecoin at a glance

Question Bitcoin USD stablecoin
Target price No peg or fixed reference value Designed to track approximately $1, subject to deviations
Primary exposure Market-price volatility Peg, reserve, issuer, redemption, banking and operational risk
Short-term USD balance Poor design fit when the balance must stay near a dollar amount Closer design fit for a nominal USD objective, but not risk-free
Direct issuer redemption Not applicable; bitcoin is not redeemed for a fixed fiat amount Depends on the token’s terms and holder eligibility
Local-currency value Moves with bitcoin and the local currency Moves with USD/local-currency exchange rates as well as any peg deviation
Inflation protection Not established by the cited evidence A USD peg does not protect against USD inflation
Key operational dependencies Wallet, exchange, network and custody Wallet, exchange, network, issuer, reserve custodian, banks and redemption channels

Why a stablecoin can still lose its “stable” value

Reserve and liquidity problems

A reserve-backed token depends on assets that can be valued and sold when holders want to exit. The relevant questions are what the reserves contain, how liquid they are, who holds them, how often the issuer discloses information, and whether the reserve value can cover redemption claims under stressed conditions. “Backed” alone does not answer those questions.

Run dynamics and confidence shocks

The European Systemic Risk Board describes run risk when confidence in backing weakens. Holders may try to redeem at the same time, forcing reserve sales or creating a queue. The ESRB cites the loss of USDC’s peg in March 2023 during the Silicon Valley Bank crisis as an example of stress surrounding reserve access. The ECB’s May 2025 analysis also notes that USDT temporarily depegged in 2022 and USDC in 2023.

A temporary recovery does not erase the practical risk: the price can be below the target precisely when you need liquidity. A token that eventually returns to its reference price may still produce a loss for someone forced to sell during the deviation.

Redemption and intermediary risk

A quoted $1 price does not mean every holder can exchange directly with the issuer for exactly $1 on demand. Eligibility rules, minimum sizes, geographic restrictions, compliance checks, settlement times and intermediary solvency can all matter. Exchange liquidity can disappear or become expensive even when an issuer continues to honor eligible redemptions.

Operational and financial-system connections

Federal Reserve staff describe stablecoin arrangements as involving complex chains of service providers. Issuers, reserve custodians, banks, exchanges, wallet services and blockchain infrastructure can create points where stress is difficult to identify and may amplify panic. Connections between crypto services and traditional financial infrastructure can transmit shocks rather than isolate them.

Smart-contract and network exposure

Using a token requires the correct blockchain, wallet address and transaction process. A mistaken network selection, lost key, frozen account, congestion or compromised service can block access even when the token’s reserve is sound. These are access risks, not changes in the token’s advertised peg, but they affect whether you can use the balance when needed.

What the latest market figures do—and do not—tell you

Aggregate growth shows adoption, not safety. Federal Reserve staff reported that stablecoin market capitalization grew about 50% during 2025. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Financial Stability Report said stablecoin assets grew 16% from July 2025 through the end of 2025 and stood at $320 billion in that report. The series is attributed to DeFiLlama, and the report says the market was concentrated among the two largest issuers.

Those are dated market-wide observations, not live balances, reserve audits or a ranking of individual tokens. A growing market can still contain weak designs, concentrated dependencies or tokens whose redemption terms do not suit your situation.

Choose according to your goal and time horizon

If you need a near-term nominal USD balance

A reserve-backed USD stablecoin with clear redemption mechanics is generally more closely matched to this objective than Bitcoin. Before using one, verify the reserve disclosures, the assets’ liquidity, the issuer’s legal entity and jurisdiction, who may redeem directly, the fees and minimums, and which exchanges and banks provide liquidity. Keep the amount and duration consistent with your ability to tolerate a peg break or service outage.

If you are measuring wealth in another currency

A USD stablecoin can rise or fall against your home currency even when it trades exactly at $1. If your expenses are in euros, pounds or another currency, the dollar exchange rate is an additional risk. Bitcoin adds its own market volatility on top of currency movements. Neither is automatically a local-currency cash substitute.

If you seek long-term appreciation

That is an investment-return question, not a short-term value-preservation question. Bitcoin may gain or lose substantially, while a stablecoin’s design goal is to remain near its reference asset rather than appreciate with the market. The cited authorities do not establish which will deliver higher future returns, nor do they provide a personalized allocation.

If you mean protection from inflation

Do not label a USD stablecoin as inflation protection. Its target is the nominal dollar, not a basket of goods. Bitcoin’s historical price increases and volatility likewise do not establish reliable real-purchasing-power protection. Define the spending basket, country and time horizon before choosing an asset for that purpose.

A practical due-diligence checklist for a stablecoin

  1. State the reference currency. Confirm that the token targets USD or the currency you actually need.
  2. Identify the stabilization model. Determine whether it is reserve-backed, algorithmic or another design, because the failure modes differ.
  3. Read the reserve disclosures. Look for the type, maturity, liquidity and custody of reserve assets, as well as the reporting date and assurance level.
  4. Check redemption rights. Find out whether ordinary holders can redeem directly, the minimum amount, fees, settlement process, eligibility rules and jurisdictions served.
  5. Separate issuer price from exchange price. Confirm where you would sell, how deep the order books are and what happens if the market price falls below the target.
  6. Map the intermediaries. List the issuer, reserve custodian, banks, exchange, wallet provider and blockchain. Each adds a possible outage, freeze or insolvency point.
  7. Confirm the exact network and token contract. Use the issuer’s current instructions and test a small transfer before moving a larger balance.
  8. Review legal protections. Determine whether the token is a bank deposit, an insured product or a separate crypto-asset under the law where you live. Do not assume dollar targeting creates deposit insurance.
  9. Set an exit plan. Decide in advance what deviation, delay or disclosure problem would make you convert to bank money or another asset.

Custody choices and failure planning

Leaving funds with an exchange or broker

This can simplify conversion and trading but adds platform, account-access and withdrawal risk. You depend on the provider’s solvency, controls, compliance process and banking relationships. Check withdrawal limits and whether the provider supports the exact token and network you hold.

Using a self-custody wallet

Self-custody removes one intermediary but makes key management your responsibility. A lost recovery phrase, phishing attack or incorrect address can make funds unrecoverable. Use a wallet that supports the token’s exact network, protect the recovery material offline and verify addresses on a separate screen before signing.

Holding a larger or longer-term balance

Concentration can turn an operational incident into a personal liquidity crisis. Consider whether the amount exceeds what you can afford to have temporarily inaccessible, and keep a separate conventional cash reserve for immediate expenses. A stablecoin should not be treated as interchangeable with an insured bank deposit merely because its label references a dollar.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Mistake: treating a $1 quote as a guarantee. Correction: distinguish the exchange price, issuer redemption promise and your own eligibility.
  • Mistake: choosing a token only by market capitalization. Correction: examine reserves, disclosure quality, liquidity and concentration of service providers.
  • Mistake: sending a token over the wrong chain. Correction: match the network at both ends and complete a small test transfer.
  • Mistake: using a USD stablecoin for a non-USD liability. Correction: measure the currency risk against the currency of your future spending.
  • Mistake: calling Bitcoin “stable” because it rose over a previous period. Correction: use a time horizon and volatility measure appropriate to the date you need the money.
  • Mistake: assuming recovery means no loss occurred. Correction: account for the price and fees available when you actually had to sell.
  • Mistake: ignoring jurisdiction. Correction: read the current issuer terms and local rules; legal treatment and protections vary by token, holder and country.

Decision framework

Your stated need Closer fit Conditions and cautions
Keep a USD amount steady for a short period A carefully evaluated USD stablecoin Accept peg, issuer, reserve, redemption, custody and intermediary risk; it is not insured bank cash.
Preserve spending power in a non-USD country Neither by default Measure local-currency exchange risk and inflation separately; a USD peg may not match your liabilities.
Seek uncertain long-term appreciation Requires a separate investment analysis Bitcoin has market-price risk; a stablecoin is designed for reference-asset stability, not growth. Future returns are not established.
Need guaranteed access for bills Use the legally protected cash instrument available in your jurisdiction Crypto assets can face outages, freezes, redemption limits and network mistakes.

Bottom line

For short-term nominal USD stability during crypto-market volatility, a well-backed stablecoin is usually the closer design match because it targets a dollar while Bitcoin does not. That advantage is conditional: the token can depeg, reserves can be questioned, direct redemption may be restricted, and the surrounding issuer, bank, exchange, wallet and blockchain can fail. Bitcoin is better understood as a volatile market asset, not a stable balance. Decide first whether you need USD stability, local-currency stability, inflation protection or long-term growth; then evaluate the specific token, custody arrangement and legal protections against that goal.
