Bitcoin vs. Stablecoins for International Remittances: Fees, Speed, and Volatility

Neither Bitcoin nor stablecoins are universally cheaper or faster for international remittances. Compare the full cost and time for the same countries, amount, provider, and payout method—including funding, currency conversion, cash-out, and whether the recipient can actually use the crypto. A small blockchain fee alone does not show what the sender pays or when the recipient gets spendable local money.

What changes between Bitcoin and a stablecoin?

Bitcoin: the amount can change in value

Bitcoin has no fiat peg. Its market price can move against both the sender’s and recipient’s currencies while it is being bought, transferred, or held. If the recipient needs local currency, they must sell or otherwise convert the Bitcoin, adding another step and potentially a fee or exchange-rate spread.

Bitcoin network fees also vary with network demand, and confirmation can take longer when demand is high. An International Monetary Fund working paper published in December 2022 examined a historical fee series in which Bitcoin transaction fees exceeded USD 5 in 15% of observations since 2015. At that fee, the network charge alone would equal at least 2.5% of a USD 200 remittance, before purchase, conversion, or payout costs. That is historical analysis, not a current fee quote or forecast.

Stablecoins: a target peg is not a guarantee

A stablecoin such as USDC is designed to track a reference currency, often the US dollar. That can reduce exposure to token-price movements against that reference currency compared with Bitcoin, but it does not eliminate risk. The Bank for International Settlements notes that stablecoin stability cannot be guaranteed in every contingency; the result depends on the arrangement, issuer, assets, and redemption process.

#1 Best Overall
Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

A dollar-referenced token also leaves the recipient exposed to changes in the dollar’s value against their local currency. They may need to sell the token through an exchange or other provider, and redemption at the intended reference value is not automatic for every holder or in every jurisdiction.

Compare the full route, not just the blockchain fee

A remittance is a chain of steps from the sender’s money to funds the recipient can spend. Costs and delays can enter at each point:

  1. Funding: The sender may pay to move money from a bank account or card into a provider or exchange. The funding method can affect both price and processing time.
  2. Conversion: Buying Bitcoin or a stablecoin may involve a spread or trading charge. A quoted exchange rate can cost more than the displayed fee suggests.
  3. Transfer: A crypto route may involve a network fee and confirmation time; a conventional service uses its own transfer and settlement arrangements. Neither step alone establishes the full delivery time.
  4. Recipient payout: The recipient may need a wallet, exchange account, identity verification, or access to a local bank or mobile-money service. Provider processing and local payment rails can dominate the wait.
  5. Cash-out or spending: If the recipient needs local currency, selling or redeeming the crypto can add a fee, spread, processing delay, or liquidity constraint. If they can safely and legally keep or spend the asset, this last conversion may not be needed.

The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide methodology treats the transaction fee and exchange-rate margin as parts of total remittance cost. Its published price observations are snapshots, not live quotes; actual fees and terms can vary.

What published figures show—and what they do not

Route or benchmark Reported cost Time or scope How to interpret it
Bitcoin remittance No comparable all-in figure established here. Fees and confirmation times vary; recipient conversion can add steps. The IMF’s December 2022 historical fee analysis is not a current corridor quote and excludes other route costs.
USDC remittance 0.30% to nearly 9% total cost in Banca d’Italia’s sample of 200 USDC transfers. Ten Italy-linked corridors to Argentina, Brazil, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan; exercise published July 30, 2026. Under 20 minutes where instant payment systems existed; one or two business days where standard bank transfers were required. This was a defined mystery-shopping exercise, not a universal price or speed promise. Banca d’Italia identified on- and off-ramp frictions as the main sources of cost and transfer duration.
Conventional remittance baseline The Financial Stability Board’s 2025 progress report gives global average costs of 6.5% for USD 200 and 4.3% for USD 500, based on World Bank Q1 2025 data. Global averages, not quotes for a particular corridor or provider. The World Bank Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage separately displays a 6.36% global average and says its latest displayed data release is Q3 2025; it lists an August 18, 2025 update. These figures have different reference points and should not be blended.

The Banca d’Italia sample found no systematic cost advantage for stablecoins over traditional channels. BIS analysis likewise cautions that the costs of entering and leaving a stablecoin route can make its total cost as high as or higher than a bank transfer. Neither finding predicts the price of a particular transfer today.

How to decide for your sending and receiving countries

Compare live offers for one specific transfer, using the same sender amount, destination, and payout method. A useful comparison records:

  • Total paid by the sender: Include funding, provider, conversion, and network charges, along with any exchange-rate margin.
  • Amount the recipient can access: Check the final local-currency amount after sale, redemption, or payout charges—not just the token amount received.
  • End-to-end time: Ask when the recipient can access spendable funds. Separate estimated blockchain confirmation from provider processing, banking hours, identity checks, and cash-out.
  • Recipient access: Confirm wallet or account requirements, identity verification, local liquidity, and whether the recipient can hold or spend the asset instead of converting it.
  • Terms and protections: Check whether the service and asset are available where both parties live, how redemption works, who holds the assets, and what recourse exists if a transfer or redemption fails.

Availability, regulation, redemption terms, and local-currency liquidity vary by jurisdiction and provider. A route that appears inexpensive on one side of the transaction may not be usable—or may cost more—when the recipient tries to cash out.
