Bitcoin vs. Oil: How the Two Markets Respond to Global Shocks

Bitcoin and oil do not have a dependable, single reaction to a global shock. A physical interruption to oil supply can drive the spot price sharply higher, while an event that raises uncertainty and weakens economic activity can push oil lower over the following months. Bitcoin’s behavior is equally conditional: one New York Federal Reserve event study found no measurable response to macroeconomic news in its sample, while International Monetary Fund (IMF) studies find that crypto-market spillovers increase during turbulent periods and that stock-market shocks can flow into Bitcoin.

The useful comparison is therefore not “which asset always rises in a crisis?” It is how the shock travels, which price measure you observe, and whether you are looking at minutes, days or several months.

What counts as a global shock?

“Global shock” describes several economically different events rather than one standardized treatment. A blockade that removes barrels from the physical oil market is a supply shock. A banking crisis, recession scare or broad geopolitical uncertainty can reduce travel, manufacturing and investment, creating a demand shock. A central-bank surprise is a monetary shock. A crypto-exchange failure or protocol incident is an asset-specific shock. Treating all of these as interchangeable is the fastest way to misread both markets.

  • Supply shock: immediate availability of crude falls. The value of prompt delivery can rise, particularly when inventories and spare capacity are limited.
  • Demand or uncertainty shock: businesses and consumers defer activity. Expected fuel consumption falls, which can outweigh any temporary supply concern.
  • Financial shock: investors de-risk, funding becomes more expensive and correlations between assets can change.
  • Crypto-specific shock: forced selling, a platform failure or a regulatory event can move Bitcoin independently of oil and macroeconomic data.

Oil and Bitcoin also trade through different transmission systems. Oil is consumed, stored and delivered through a physical supply chain. Bitcoin is a digitally traded financial asset whose price is influenced by liquidity, leverage, exchange flows and investor positioning. Those structural differences explain why a headline that affects both assets can produce opposite outcomes.

How oil responds: supply first, demand over time

When a physical interruption lifts spot oil

The clearest bullish oil scenario is an abrupt loss of supply. The Federal Reserve Board’s FEDS Note of October 9, 2026, examines an oil-supply reduction after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz during the Middle East conflict discussed in that note. In the episode described, spot oil had risen from about $60 per barrel at the start of 2026 and fluctuated between $80 and $100 since early March. Those are observations from the note’s period, not a live quotation or a forecast.

The immediate market signal was severe backwardation: the spot price moved substantially above prices for delivery six months or one year ahead. A buyer needing crude now was willing to pay a premium over a buyer seeking delivery later. That shape can indicate acute scarcity, a high convenience yield for holding physical barrels, or a market in which near-term availability matters more than long-run expectations.

Backwardation does not mean every oil-related security rises by the same amount. Producers, refiners, airlines and fuel consumers have different exposures; local grades can diverge from benchmark crude; and futures contracts expire and roll. The physical bottleneck is the causal mechanism, not a guarantee that every quoted price follows spot immediately.

Why a geopolitical event can lower oil

The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report Chapter 2 online annex estimates oil-price responses to geopolitical-risk shocks across countries and episodes. Prices fluctuate during the first month, then decline on average in subsequent months. The cumulative average decline reaches roughly 1 percent at its peak several months after the shock, with a larger decline for global or large country-specific risk shocks.

This average result does not contradict a supply-driven spike. The IMF explains two opposing channels. A geopolitical event can disrupt production or transport and create a cost-push increase. At the same time, uncertainty can weaken trade, investment and consumption. In the studied sample, the demand and uncertainty effects dominate on average after the initial period, producing a negative cumulative response. An individual conflict that removes a major volume of crude can still generate a large and persistent increase.

Spot prices and futures prices answer different questions

Spot oil answers, approximately, “What is a barrel available now worth?” A futures contract answers, “What price is being quoted today for delivery at a specified future date?” The second price includes expectations, financing, storage economics, risk premiums and market liquidity.

The Federal Reserve authors Erik Heitfield, Yang-Ho Park and Erfan Danesh summarize the limitation precisely: “Oil futures prices should provide an indication of market participants’ expectations about future oil prices, but neither economic theory nor a large body of empirical work suggests that this relationship is likely to be one-to-one in all circumstances.”

In the 2026 episode, the authors say futures risk premiums were likely negative from March onward and caution that estimates made during unusually severe backwardation extrapolate beyond typical historical data. Reduced liquidity and shallower market depth further weaken the idea that a futures quote is a clean forecast of future spot oil. A trader reading the curve should therefore distinguish:

  • Expected fundamentals: anticipated production, consumption and inventories.
  • Convenience yield: the value of having physical crude available immediately.
  • Risk premium: compensation demanded for bearing uncertain future prices.
  • Liquidity premium or discount: the effect of how easily positions can be entered or exited.

How Bitcoin responds: from apparent disconnection to stress spillovers

An event study found no response to macro news in its sample

The New York Fed staff report The Bitcoin–Macro Disconnect uses an intraday event-study design. Its key result is that, unlike other US asset classes, “Bitcoin is orthogonal to monetary and macroeconomic news.” In practical terms, the Bitcoin return response measured in that sample was not statistically linked to the scheduled macroeconomic surprises examined by the authors.

That is a finding about a particular period, frequency and methodology. It does not establish that Bitcoin will remain insulated from every future interest-rate decision, inflation release or geopolitical announcement. Intraday independence can coexist with a relationship that appears over weeks through portfolio flows, leverage or changing risk appetite.

Spillovers become larger during turbulence

Roshan Iyer and Adina Popescu’s IMF Working Paper, published September 29, 2023, studies return and volatility spillovers between crypto assets and financial markets from 2014 through the end of 2022. The authors report that spillovers intensify during turbulence caused by adverse economic and financial news, crypto events or exogenous shocks. Measured interdependence peaks during the COVID-19 pandemic in their sample.

In calmer conditions, crypto assets in the study often transmit spillovers to financial markets. During financial stress, however, the direction can reverse. That reversal matters because an asset that appears to diversify a portfolio in normal times may become more connected to stocks, credit or other risk assets when investors are liquidating positions simultaneously.

More recent evidence links Bitcoin to stock-market pressure

The IMF’s April 2025 Global Financial Stability Report provides a later snapshot. It reports that Bitcoin had fallen more than 25 percent from its early-2025 peak and that stock-market shocks appeared to spill over to Bitcoin more than the reverse in the report’s analysis. The drawdown and spillover direction describe the report’s publication-period observations; they are not current market statistics or a permanent structural rule.

The same report discusses Bitcoin’s performance and exchange-traded-product flows since the prior October 2024 report. Those flows can connect Bitcoin to conventional portfolio allocation even when the underlying asset remains available around the clock. A fund outflow, margin call or broad reduction in risk can reach Bitcoin through these channels without any change in the physical oil market.

Bitcoin versus oil at a glance

Question Oil Bitcoin
Primary shock channel Physical supply, inventories, transport, consumption and uncertainty Macro news, liquidity, leverage, crypto events and cross-asset portfolio flows
Immediate measure Spot price and nearby futures; severe shortages can produce backwardation Intraday return, volatility and exchange or fund flows
Typical time issue Supply effects can appear immediately; demand and uncertainty effects may dominate over subsequent months An event study can show little intraday response while longer stress episodes show stronger spillovers
Evidence on crisis behavior IMF average geopolitical-risk response was a decline of about 1 percent several months after the shock; direct supply disruptions can raise spot prices New York Fed sample found no measurable macro-news response; IMF studies find larger stress-period interdependence and stock-to-Bitcoin spillovers
Does the evidence establish a fixed Bitcoin-oil correlation? No. The cited studies analyze oil responses and Bitcoin or financial-market responses separately, not a matched model using the same shocks.

Does Bitcoin go up when oil prices rise?

There is no dependable rule in the cited evidence. Oil can rise because a supply route is blocked, while Bitcoin is simultaneously sold as investors reduce risk. Oil can fall because a geopolitical event damages expected demand, while Bitcoin rises on a separate liquidity or positioning shift. A simple chart of two prices cannot identify which mechanism is operating.

Correlation also changes with the measurement choice. Comparing daily spot oil with a Bitcoin exchange price is different from comparing monthly returns, oil futures and a Bitcoin exchange-traded product. Different time zones, contract rolls, trading hours and volatility levels can create or erase apparent relationships. The available studies do not provide a single coefficient that answers “Bitcoin versus oil” for every global shock.

Is Bitcoin a safe haven during geopolitical crises?

The evidence does not support calling Bitcoin a universal safe haven. A safe-haven claim requires more than occasional price strength: it implies reliable protection when another risky asset is falling, ideally across the relevant crisis horizon. The New York Fed’s intraday result suggests disconnection from the macro news in its sample, but the IMF’s work shows that interdependence increases during turbulence and that stock-market shocks can spill into Bitcoin.

Bitcoin may still serve a particular portfolio purpose for an investor who accepts large drawdowns, continuous trading and changing correlations. That is a conditional diversification argument, not a promise of crisis protection. Oil is not a universal haven either: its response depends on whether the shock restricts supply or destroys demand, and futures can be distorted by risk and liquidity premiums.

How to analyze a new global shock

  1. Classify the event. Decide whether the first-order mechanism is a physical supply loss, a demand slowdown, monetary tightening, financial contagion or a crypto-specific failure.
  2. Identify the affected horizon. Ask what should move in minutes, what may adjust over days and what could emerge only after inventories, production and demand expectations are revised.
  3. Separate oil spot from the curve. Check the nearby contract against six-month and one-year futures. A large spot premium indicates immediate scarcity, but it does not prove that long-run prices will follow.
  4. Check market functioning. During severe backwardation, examine bid-ask spreads, open interest, trading volume and margin conditions. Thin markets can exaggerate moves and make futures less informative.
  5. For Bitcoin, distinguish news from stress. An intraday macro surprise may produce little measured response, while forced selling, fund flows or a broad risk-off episode can increase spillovers later.
  6. Compare returns, not headlines. Use the same time zone, frequency and price convention. Note whether you are measuring spot, a futures contract, an exchange-traded product or a particular Bitcoin venue.
  7. State the uncertainty. If the event combines supply disruption and demand damage, present both channels rather than forcing a one-direction forecast.

What the historical evidence can and cannot tell you

The IMF oil estimate is an average, not a crisis playbook

The roughly 1 percent decline reported by the April 2025 IMF annex is an average cumulative response across the geopolitical-risk episodes studied. It reaches its peak several months after the shock and is larger for global or large country-specific risk shocks. It should not be used as an estimate of the first-hour move after a pipeline closure, a strait blockade or a production outage.

The 2026 oil observations are episode-specific

The Federal Reserve note’s description of WTI moving from around $60 at the start of 2026 to an $80–$100 range from early March, together with severe backwardation, describes the conflict and Strait of Hormuz episode analyzed in that note. It is not current-price guidance and cannot be generalized to every geopolitical event.

The Bitcoin drawdown is also time-bounded

The IMF’s statement that Bitcoin was more than 25 percent below its early-2025 peak is a publication-period observation from April 2025. It demonstrates sensitivity during that interval, not a permanent level, trend or forecast.

A practical decision framework for readers

If your question is whether a particular shock should be bullish or bearish for oil, begin with barrels: how much production or transport capacity is actually unavailable, for how long and in which region? Then assess demand: does the event threaten fuel use, industrial output or global trade? Finally, inspect the futures curve and liquidity before interpreting the quoted price.

If your question is whether Bitcoin should hedge that shock, begin with transmission rather than symbolism. Is the event changing interest-rate expectations, equity volatility, funding conditions, exchange-traded-product flows or crypto leverage? A physical oil shortage does not automatically create demand for Bitcoin. Conversely, a macro event can affect Bitcoin through financial channels even when oil supply is unaffected.

For portfolio analysis, write down the asset, price measure, observation window and shock definition before calculating a relationship. Report whether the result is an average, an event-specific estimate or a stress-period observation. This prevents a backwardation episode from being mistaken for a long-run oil forecast or a single Bitcoin drawdown from being presented as a universal safe-haven test.

Bottom line

Oil’s response is governed first by the balance between physical supply and expected demand. A direct supply interruption can lift spot prices and create backwardation; uncertainty and weaker activity can instead produce a decline over subsequent months, as in the IMF’s average geopolitical-risk estimate. Bitcoin’s response is governed by changing financial linkages. It appeared disconnected from macro news in one New York Fed sample, yet IMF evidence shows stronger spillovers during turbulent periods and stock-market pressure flowing into Bitcoin in a later analysis. Neither asset is a guaranteed hedge, and the cited evidence does not establish a single Bitcoin-oil correlation for global shocks.
