Bitcoin and gold are both scarce assets, but scarcity alone does not make either one a dependable store of purchasing power. Gold has a much longer observed record, several sources of underlying demand and a less dramatic portfolio impact in the cited simulations. Bitcoin has a transparent issuance schedule and a stated 21-million-coin limit, yet its shorter history and higher sensitivity to allocation have produced materially different volatility and drawdown behavior.
The useful comparison is not “which asset always wins?” No single matched-window dataset in the available evidence establishes a winner. Instead, compare the assets by purchasing-power history, supply, volatility, demand, custody, liquidity and the role each may play in a diversified portfolio.

What “store of value” means in this comparison
A store of value should preserve purchasing power over a chosen period and in a specified currency. That requires more than a rising chart. A complete assessment asks:

|---|---|---|---|
| Supply design | Preset issuance schedule with a stated 21 million BTC limit. | No protocol cap; above-ground stock grew 1.7% per year over the 25 years covered by the World Gold Council (WGC) 2026 analysis. | Bitcoin’s scarcity is rule-based; gold’s is based on slow physical supply growth. |
| Observed price history | Shorter history than gold; the cited material does not provide a matched-period return comparison with gold. | WGC reports 9% annualised US-dollar price growth since the end of the US gold standard in 1971. | The figures use different histories and cannot be combined into a head-to-head score. |
| Inflation evidence | A supply limit does not guarantee stable purchasing power or reliable inflation protection. | WGC says gold outpaced US and world CPI since 1971 and averaged 10% annual growth in years when US inflation was 2%–5%. | These are historical WGC observations, not a guarantee of short-term hedging. |
| Income | No regular income from holding the asset itself. | No regular income; returns depend on price appreciation. | Neither is a cash-yielding investment. |
| Portfolio behavior in cited WGC simulation | Risk-adjusted benefit varied by allocation; larger tested allocations increased volatility and drawdowns. | Reduced volatility across the tested allocations. | Results are hypothetical, US-dollar based and specific to the selected period and portfolio. |

Purchasing power over time
Gold’s long historical record
The WGC’s 2026 “Gold’s key attributes – Return” analysis reports 9% annualised growth in the US-dollar gold price since the end of the US gold standard in 1971, with data through 2025-12-31. The same analysis reports that gold outpaced both US and world consumer-price inflation over that period.
That result describes a long-run average price path. It does not mean gold rose 9% every year, nor that it protected a holder from inflation in every short interval. Gold can spend years below a previous high, and an investor’s result also depends on the purchase date, sale date, currency, taxes, dealer premiums and storage costs.
Gold during moderate US inflation
In a separate WGC calculation using annual observations since January 1971, gold-price growth averaged 10% per year when US inflation was between 2% and 5%, measured through 2025-12-31. This is an average conditional on that inflation range, not evidence that gold automatically rises whenever prices increase. Inflation can be accompanied by higher interest rates, stronger currencies, recession or falling investment demand, all of which can change gold’s short-term price.

Bitcoin has not existed long enough to provide gold’s multi-decade record across multiple monetary regimes. Its preset issuance is a supply characteristic, not a purchasing-power result. A token can be limited in quantity and still lose value if demand falls, if investors require a higher risk premium, or if competing assets attract capital.
Because the cited material does not provide a single independent dataset that measures Bitcoin and gold over the same dates, in the same currency and with the same methodology, it cannot support a defensible claim that one has delivered the higher long-term return. Combining Bitcoin’s results from one period with gold’s 1971–2025 average would create a misleading comparison.
Supply, scarcity and issuance
Bitcoin’s programmed limit
An issuer Form 10-K filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission describes approximately 19.8 million Bitcoin outstanding as of 2024-12-31, a 3.125 BTC block reward at that filing date and a predetermined limit of 21 million BTC. These are dated filing figures, not a live supply reading.

The issuance schedule makes new supply predictable relative to many traditional assets. It does not make the market price predictable. Price still depends on buyers and sellers, liquidity, expectations, regulation, technological developments and the willingness of holders to sell.

The same filing explains that no official developer group controls the network. Protocol changes take effect for users and miners who choose to adopt them. That governance structure is different from a company deciding to issue new shares, but it also means that the practical operation of the rules depends on participation and social consensus rather than on a single administrator.
Gold’s expanding but slow stock
Gold does not have a fixed protocol ceiling. New mine production adds to the existing stock, and recycling changes the flow of available metal. The WGC’s 2026 demand analysis says the above-ground gold stock grew 1.7% per year over the previous 25 years, through the latest period stated in that analysis.
The WGC compares that stock growth with 7.3% annual growth in currency money supply over the same period. The 7.3% figure is the Council’s specified comparison, not a universal growth rate for every currency or country. Gold’s slow supply growth can limit dilution relative to faster-growing monetary aggregates, but it cannot prevent price declines when demand weakens.
Why scarcity is only one input
Scarcity matters when people want to hold the scarce thing. A fixed or slowly growing supply can support value if demand is durable, but it cannot determine what buyers will pay. For both assets, the relevant question is whether future demand can absorb new supply and sellers at a price that preserves purchasing power.
Demand and valuation support
Gold’s diversified demand base
The WGC identifies four major gold-demand categories: jewellery, technology, investment and central banks. Its 10-year demand calculations run through Q4 2025 and include bars and coins. These uses are not equally sensitive to price or economic conditions. Jewellery demand can respond to household income and local prices; technology demand reflects industrial applications; investment demand reacts to rates, currencies and risk sentiment; central-bank buying reflects reserve-management decisions.

This diversity does not make gold risk-free. It does mean that valuation is not dependent on one type of buyer. A fall in one category can be partly offset by strength in another, although there is no guarantee that such offsets will occur in a particular year.
Bitcoin demand in the cited evidence
Bitcoin’s value is primarily tied to people’s willingness to hold and transact in the network’s digital asset. The evidence used here does not establish a stable, non-investment demand base comparable to gold’s jewellery, technology and central-bank channels. That does not prove Bitcoin lacks utility; it means the cited material does not quantify a durable demand floor that can be compared directly with gold’s established sectors.
Volatility, drawdowns and the ability to hold
Gold can lose substantial value
Gold has no regular income, so a holder relies on eventual price appreciation. The WGC’s 2026 risk discussion notes years in which gold rose or fell by close to 30% and documents multi-year periods of weaker performance. A long-run positive average therefore coexists with meaningful timing risk: buying near a high can leave an investor underwater for an extended period.

Bitcoin’s issuance schedule says how many units may be created; it says nothing about the size of a market decline. The cited sources do not provide a matched-window Bitcoin-versus-gold drawdown statistic, so this article does not assign a numerical loss comparison. The practical implication is still clear: an investor must be able to tolerate potentially large price swings without being forced to sell.
Why drawdown matters more than an average
Two assets can have the same ending value and very different paths. A deep interim loss can trigger a sale, create a tax bill or force a portfolio to miss a recovery. Evaluate the worst historical decline, time to recover, frequency of losing periods and the size of the position—not only the annualised return.
Liquidity, ownership and custody
Physical gold
Gold can be owned as jewellery, bars or coins, with bars and coins included in the WGC’s investment-demand calculations. Direct ownership requires decisions about authenticity, dealer premium, storage, insurance and resale. A coin that carries a large retail premium may not track the quoted spot price closely enough for a short-term trade, and a buyer should establish how and where the metal can be sold before purchasing it.

Bitcoin
Bitcoin ownership is recorded through the network and controlled through digital credentials. The operational choices are different from those for a physical metal: an owner must understand how access is created, backed up and transferred, and must account for the possibility of losing access. The available evidence does not support a detailed ranking of hardware, exchange or self-custody security, so those choices should be treated as a separate technical and operational decision rather than as proof that one asset is inherently safer.

An asset may trade frequently yet still be costly to own or sell in a particular form. Compare quoted price with the all-in cost: spreads, premiums, commissions, withdrawal or transfer charges, storage, insurance and taxes. Also ask whether you can access the asset during the exact market conditions in which you may need cash.
What the cited portfolio analysis found
The WGC’s 2024 analysis, “Why bitcoin isn’t the new gold,” examined US-dollar performance from 2010-07-30 through 2024-07-31 in a hypothetical portfolio. It found that gold reduced portfolio volatility across the tested allocations. Bitcoin’s simulated risk-adjusted contribution depended on the allocation, and the higher tested allocations increased volatility and drawdowns.
Those findings do not establish a universal rule. Results depend on the assets selected, starting weights, rebalancing, measurement currency, date range and the definition of risk. They also describe what happened in a backtest, not what will happen in a future portfolio. The WGC’s earlier 2020 hypothetical study, using 2015-12-31 to 2020-12-31 data, is useful historical context but is too old to stand in for current market behavior.
The portfolio lesson is narrower than “gold is good and Bitcoin is bad”: the two assets have not behaved as interchangeable diversifiers in the cited simulations. Replacing one with the other changes expected volatility and the size of losses an investor must be prepared to endure.
Choosing between Bitcoin and gold by objective
If your priority is a long observed record
Gold has the advantage. Its price history spans the end of the US gold standard in 1971 through the WGC’s 2025 data, including multiple inflation, interest-rate and economic cycles. Bitcoin’s record is materially shorter, so conclusions about its behavior across future regimes require more extrapolation.

If your priority is a transparent issuance rule
Bitcoin has the clearer numerical rule: a stated 21-million limit and a schedule that produced a 3.125 BTC block reward at the SEC filing date of 2024-12-31. Gold has no fixed cap, but its above-ground stock has grown slowly. Decide whether you value a hard protocol limit or a long-established physical stock whose additions have historically been modest relative to the existing supply.
If your priority is lower portfolio disruption
The cited WGC simulation favors gold in the tested allocations because it reduced portfolio volatility, while larger Bitcoin allocations raised volatility and drawdowns. This is a historical portfolio result, not a promise. An investor who cannot tolerate large fluctuations should not infer suitability from Bitcoin’s long-run appreciation stories.
If your priority is exposure to multiple demand channels
Gold has documented jewellery, technology, investment and central-bank demand. The cited evidence does not establish an equivalent set of stable, non-investment demand sources for Bitcoin. That difference may matter when speculative interest declines.
A practical evaluation process
- Set the horizon and currency. Define whether the goal is to preserve purchasing power in US dollars, another currency or a specific spending basket, and choose a holding period long enough to evaluate it.
- Separate return from path. Record the starting value, ending value, annualised result, largest decline and recovery time. Do not use a return from one period to characterize the other asset.
- Stress-test the position size. Model what a 30% or larger decline would do to your finances without assuming that the loss will quickly reverse. Gold itself has had years near that magnitude; Bitcoin’s supply limit does not rule out similar or larger market losses.
- Price the ownership method. For physical gold, include premiums, assay or authenticity checks, storage, insurance and resale spread. For Bitcoin, include the operational cost and responsibility of maintaining access and transferring the asset.
- Check portfolio interaction. Use a consistent dataset, rebalance rule and currency when testing whether an allocation reduces or increases total volatility.
- Review the thesis. Revisit the reasons for ownership when demand, regulation, technology, monetary policy or personal cash needs change. A scarcity argument is not a substitute for monitoring the conditions that create demand.
Common mistakes in the Bitcoin-versus-gold debate
- Treating the 21-million limit as a price floor. Limited supply cannot force buyers to maintain a price.
- Calling a long-run average a guaranteed inflation hedge. Gold’s 9% annualised US-dollar growth since 1971 and its 10% average in 2%–5% inflation years are historical WGC calculations, not short-term promises.
- Mixing periods and currencies. A Bitcoin result from one date range and a gold result from another cannot form a controlled head-to-head test.
- Ignoring drawdowns because the ending chart rises. A holder may not survive the path required to reach the endpoint.
- Assuming gold is cash. Gold pays no regular income and can underperform for years.
- Assuming diversification is automatic. The WGC simulations show that Bitcoin’s portfolio effect changed with allocation, while higher tested allocations increased volatility and drawdowns.
- Confusing a product with an asset. A coin’s premium, storage arrangement or resale channel can materially change the result relative to a spot-price chart.
Bottom line for a long-term store-of-value decision
Gold is the better-supported candidate when “store of value” means a long observed history, documented inflation comparisons and a portfolio role that reduced volatility in the cited WGC simulations. Bitcoin offers a more explicit scarcity rule and easy divisibility in its native design, but its shorter record and allocation-sensitive volatility make its purchasing-power outcome less established.
Neither asset is guaranteed to preserve wealth over every interval. Gold can fall sharply and produce no income; Bitcoin’s 21-million limit does not prevent deep drawdowns. A disciplined comparison therefore starts with your horizon, currency, ability to withstand losses, custody method and required liquidity—not with a slogan that one asset is simply “the new gold.”
