Bitcoin vs. Ethereum: Which Is More Volatile, and What Drives Each Price?

There is no permanent winner: whether Bitcoin or ether is more volatile depends on the dates and method used to measure it. A 2021 CME Group analysis found ether more volatile over its historical period, but later disclosures do not establish a precise current ranking on a shared window. Both prices respond to supply and demand, expectations, adoption, market conditions and speculation; their network supply mechanics differ.

Which is more volatile: Bitcoin or ether?

You need a measurement window to answer fairly. Volatility measures how widely returns vary, not whether prices rise or fall. A valid comparison uses the same dates, return frequency, price source and calculation for BTC and ETH, with the same annualization method.

CME Group’s June 2021 historical analysis said ether had a close correlation with Bitcoin but higher volatility over the period it examined. That is a period-specific finding, not a rule that ether is always more volatile. Coinbase’s 2025 annual report later described one-year historical volatility for both Bitcoin and Ethereum as approximately 50%, based on annualized standard deviations of daily returns observed over the preceding 24 months as of December 31, 2025. That approximate joint description does not give a precise same-window ranking. CME Group’s 2021 analysis and Coinbase’s 2025 annual report therefore cannot support a timeless winner.

A separate Bitwise Ethereum ETF filing reports Ether’s annualized standard deviation as 69.71% for daily returns from December 31, 2021 through December 31, 2025, using a 365-day factor. This is a realized historical measure for ETH over that stated window; it is not directly comparable with figures calculated over different windows or methods, and it does not rank ETH against BTC. The Bitwise filing describes its calculation as using daily 4 p.m. ET-to-4 p.m. ET price returns.

Realized versus implied volatility

Historical, or realized, volatility describes variation in returns that already occurred. Options-implied volatility instead reflects expectations embedded in options prices. CME’s Bitcoin Volatility Index (BVX) is a real-time, 30-day constant-maturity implied-volatility measure based on CME Bitcoin and Micro Bitcoin options order-book data; BVXS is a daily settlement measure. These Bitcoin indices are not a matched BTC-versus-ETH comparison. CME’s index description explains the measures.

How Bitcoin and ether differ

Bitcoin (BTC) is the asset on the Bitcoin network. Ether (ETH) is the native asset of Ethereum, the network and system. Their supply rules differ, but neither set of rules alone determines market price.

Comparison Bitcoin (BTC) Ether (ETH)
Issuance Follows a predetermined block-reward schedule. The reward became 3.125 BTC per block after the April 2024 halving. New issuance varies with proof-of-stake network validators.
Supply mechanics The current protocol rules set a cap of 21 million BTC; a Bitwise report stated approximately 19.9 million were outstanding as of December 2025. Ethereum burns transaction fees; depending on network activity, the burn can offset some or all of issuance. The cited filing does not establish a fixed supply cap.
Demand context Adoption and use, protocol development, perceptions of scarcity, sentiment, and political, economic and regulatory conditions are among cited influences. Adoption, store-of-value expectations, merchant acceptance and transaction activity are among cited influences; usage also affects fee burning.
Volatility evidence cited here Coinbase described BTC and ETH together as having approximately 50% one-year historical volatility as of December 31, 2025, without a precise comparative table. CME found higher ETH volatility in its 2021 historical analysis; Bitwise reported 69.71% annualized standard deviation for ETH returns from December 31, 2021 through December 31, 2025. Neither establishes a synchronized current ranking against BTC.

What drives Bitcoin’s price?

Bitcoin’s issuance schedule is set by protocol rules rather than adjusted in response to short-term price moves. The current rules specify a 21 million BTC cap, and the block reward fell to 3.125 BTC after the April 2024 halving. These features can shape scarcity expectations, but they do not mechanically set the price or guarantee appreciation. A Bitwise Bitcoin ETF report put outstanding supply at approximately 19.9 million BTC as of December 2025. The report is the source for those dated figures.

Demand and expectations still matter. Bitcoin’s 2025 annual-report discussion identifies adoption and use, protocol development, consumer preferences, real or perceived scarcity, political, economic and regulatory conditions, and speculation among factors that have affected pricing. These are influences, not a formula for forecasting short-term moves. Riot Platforms’ 2025 annual report also gives a BTC market-price range of approximately $58,900 to $124,500 for its fiscal year ended September 30, 2025, in the report’s stated principal-market context. That range covers a defined fiscal year; it is not a volatility statistic.

What drives ether’s price?

Ethereum has used proof of stake since the Merge on September 15, 2022. Validator activity affects new ETH issuance, while EIP-1559 burns transaction fees. When network use increases, fee burning can offset some or all of issuance. That mechanism makes ETH’s net supply responsive to network activity; it does not, by itself, establish whether the price will rise or fall. Ethereum’s Merge overview dates the transition, and Bitwise’s Ethereum ETF filing describes issuance and fee burning.

Ether’s market value also reflects global supply and demand and expectations about adoption, use as a store of value, merchant acceptance and peer-to-peer transaction volume. Network activity can affect both demand for ETH and the amount burned, but the net price effect cannot be inferred from activity alone. The Bitwise filing discusses these market influences.

Why volatility matters for access products

Owning BTC or ETH directly is not the same exposure as holding a futures contract or a futures ETF. The CFTC warns that virtual currencies are more volatile than traditional fiat currencies and that leverage can magnify gains and losses in futures. Its advisory on Bitcoin futures ETFs also notes that their returns can differ from buying spot Bitcoin. Do not treat a derivatives product’s performance as a direct reading of the underlying asset’s price behavior. CFTC virtual-currency advisory and CFTC Bitcoin futures ETF advisory.
