Bitcoin (BTC) has deeper trading liquidity than Ethereum (ETH) in the latest cited centralized-exchange comparisons. CoinGecko’s 2026 order-book study found substantially more BTC depth at its measured price bands, while TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample found lower, more stable BTC spot slippage overall and tighter BTC spreads. Those results describe selected venues, pairs, order sizes and observation periods—not a guarantee that BTC will beat ETH for every trade or every market.
If you are asking which cryptocurrency has deeper order books or less slippage for a large trade, BTC is the stronger broad-market default in these studies. The practical answer still depends on the exact exchange, trading pair, market type, side, notional and time of execution.

What “deeper liquidity” means for a crypto trader
Liquidity is the market’s ability to absorb a buy or sell order without moving the price very far. A deep market has substantial resting bids and asks near the current mid-price, so a large order can execute with limited price impact. A thin market may show a tradable price for a small order but move sharply when the order is larger.

It is the quality of the fill: how much quantity is available, how far the price moves while your order executes, how wide the quoted spread is, and how consistently those conditions hold. A market that looks liquid at one timestamp may be much less accommodating during a volatile move.

Order-book depth
Order-book depth measures the value or amount of resting bids and asks within a specified distance of the mid-price. A study might count orders within ±0.1% of the midpoint, or use a fixed dollar band such as ±$100 for BTC. A wider band includes orders farther from the market and will normally produce a larger depth figure. Depth is therefore meaningful only when the band, side and unit are stated.
Buy-side and sell-side depth should be reported separately. If a book has $20 million of bids but only $5 million of asks inside the same band, it is better prepared for incoming sells than buys. “Total depth” can hide that imbalance. The number of price levels included also matters: two books can show similar notional depth while one concentrates liquidity at the top and the other spreads it across many levels.
Bid-ask spread
The spread is the difference between the best ask and best bid. It is the immediate quoted cost of crossing from one side of the book to the other, before fees. A narrow spread generally indicates strong competition among liquidity providers, but it does not reveal how much size is available behind the best quotes.
Recommended Free Tools
Spread is usually expressed in price units or basis points relative to the midpoint. It is a top-of-book measure, so a market can have an extremely narrow first quote and still deliver substantial slippage once a large order consumes several levels. Evaluate spread together with executable depth.
Slippage
Slippage compares the execution price of a hypothetical order with a reference price, such as the mid-price. It changes with order size and direction. A $100,000 sell and a $500,000 sell can have very different results in the same market, and a buy can encounter a different book from a sell.
For a sell, the relevant liquidity is the bid side; for a buy, it is the ask side. The meaningful result is generally the volume-weighted average execution price across all consumed levels, not the first displayed quote. Median slippage describes a typical observation in a sample, while a percentile such as P90 shows a less favorable but still regularly occurring outcome.
Trading volume alone cannot answer which asset is more liquid. A market can record heavy turnover while having limited depth at the exact price and venue where your order must execute. Asset-level aggregations can also combine several instruments and exchanges, answering a different question from the depth of one pair on one venue. The most useful comparison combines depth, spread and size-specific slippage.
Which is more liquid, Bitcoin or Ethereum?
Across the latest cited centralized-exchange studies, BTC is the stronger answer. CoinGecko reported larger median cumulative BTC depth than ETH across eight selected exchanges. TokenInsight’s September 2026 analysis of nine selected exchanges reported lower and more stable BTC spot slippage overall, plus substantially tighter BTC spot spreads.
The conclusion is comparative, not universal. Both studies use bounded exchange samples and defined measurement methods. A particular ETH pair can be deeper than a particular BTC pair at a particular moment, especially when the BTC market is stressed or the ETH venue has unusually strong liquidity. Always match the evidence to your own exchange, quote currency, market type and order size.

For a small order, the distinction may be economically irrelevant if both books offer enough top-of-book quantity and the fee schedule dominates the cost. For a large order, however, differences in depth and slippage compound across every price level consumed. Execution urgency matters too: a market order values completion, while a limit order can control the worst acceptable price but may remain partly or entirely unfilled.
CoinGecko’s 2026 order-book comparison
CoinGecko’s report, updated September 30, 2026, compared eight selected centralized exchanges. At the report’s stated narrow price ranges, the median cumulative BTC depth was $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side. CoinGecko described that as an almost 50% increase from its 2025 comparison.
The corresponding ETH depth was $13–14 million. In that report-specific comparison, ETH represented roughly 35–45% of BTC depth, down from at least 60% in the prior-year comparison. Seven of the eight exchanges still had more than $1 million of ETH depth on each side at the measured range, so the result does not mean ETH books were empty or unusable.
| Asset | Selected venues | Depth reported | Measurement band | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BTC | Eight centralized exchanges | $29 million median buy-side; $37 million median sell-side | Approximately ±$100 around the BTC mid-price | Deeper on both sides in this sample |
| ETH | Eight centralized exchanges | $13–14 million median | Approximately ±$3 around the ETH mid-price | About 35–45% of BTC depth in this report’s comparison |
The BTC and ETH bands are different in absolute dollars: about $100 for BTC versus about $3 for ETH. That means the 35–45% ratio is the publisher’s specified comparison, not a universal, perfectly like-for-like depth ratio. A different percentage band, quote currency or sampling method could produce a different relationship. Readers should not convert the ratio into a prediction of how a particular BTC/USDT or ETH/USDT order will fill.
What TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample found
TokenInsight sampled official exchange API snapshots every 30 minutes from August 16 through September 14, 2026 (UTC+8), covering nine selected exchanges. Its spot-market findings favored BTC for the reported order sizes: BTC slippage was lower and more stable overall than ETH slippage.
Because the observations were periodic snapshots, the results describe conditions recorded during the sample window rather than every intervening trade. They are useful for comparing typical and adverse observations across the included venues, but they cannot show the exact book that will be available when a future order is submitted.

BTC spot sell orders
- At a reported $100,000 sell size on Binance, median slippage was near zero and the 90th-percentile (P90) slippage was 0.007%.
- At a reported $500,000 sell size, MEXC had the lowest stated median slippage at 0.005%.
- At that $500,000 size, Binance had the best stated P90 result at 0.018%.
Median slippage describes the middle observation in the sample; P90 shows the level at or below which 90% of observations fell. The two statistics answer different risk questions: a low median describes typical conditions, while P90 highlights less favorable periods without focusing only on the single worst snapshot. A desk planning a large execution can use both: the median for expected conditions and P90 for a more conservative impact allowance.
ETH spot sell orders
For the reported $100,000 ETH spot order, Binance led the sample with 0.002% median slippage. At $500,000, TokenInsight said differences among exchanges became more pronounced and that Binance retained the lowest slippage. The report’s broad conclusion still favored BTC for lower, steadier slippage, but an individual ETH statistic can be competitive at a particular size or venue. Do not replace the full sample conclusion with one isolated number.
This apparent tension is a useful warning: “BTC is more liquid” does not mean BTC wins every metric at every notional. The asset-level conclusion reflects the pattern across reported sizes, exchanges and stability measures. Your own live test should use the same side and notional for both assets.

Quoted spread results
TokenInsight reported BTC spot spreads of 0.001 basis points for the tightest group—Binance, Bitget, MEXC and HTX. ETH’s narrowest reported spread was 0.040 basis points on KuCoin, while most other included exchanges were at 0.041 basis points. These are venue- and sample-specific quoted spreads, not a promise of the spread you will see now.
Spread is only one part of the transaction cost. Trading fees, funding or other contract costs are separate from the quoted spread and were not established by these comparisons. A trader should add the applicable fee to estimated market impact when deciding whether an execution method is economical.
Why BTC’s deeper book can matter to a large order
When more bids and asks sit close to the midpoint, a market order can consume several price levels before its average execution price moves materially. That tends to reduce market impact, make expected execution easier to model and lower the chance that a stop or rebalance order crosses an unexpectedly thin section of the book.
The benefit is most relevant for orders large relative to visible depth. A small retail order may fill inside one or two top-of-book levels in both BTC and ETH, making the difference immaterial after fees. For a fund, treasury, market maker or trader executing hundreds of thousands of dollars, the same percentage difference can materially affect the average fill. A $500,000 order should therefore be tested at $500,000, not inferred from a $100,000 result.
Displayed depth is not guaranteed liquidity. Orders can be canceled or replenished between the moment you read the book and the moment your order reaches the matching engine. During a sharp move, both assets can lose depth quickly as liquidity providers widen quotes or withdraw them. A staged execution can reduce instantaneous impact, but it introduces timing and price risk.

Spot BTC and ETH markets represent ownership or delivery of the underlying asset, while futures and perpetual markets use derivatives, margin and liquidation mechanics. Their books, participants, funding conditions and depth can differ substantially. A spot result cannot be used as proof that the corresponding perpetual contract is deeper.
TokenInsight’s same September 2026 report illustrates why rankings require a measurement band. For combined BTC and ETH futures depth, MEXC led at the 0.03% band, while Bitget led at the 0.05% band. The leader changed when the width of the band changed. That is a venue-ranking observation, not a universal recommendation for either exchange or asset.
Futures comparisons also require the contract’s quote and settlement details, leverage and whether the reported depth is for one contract or an aggregated set of instruments. Keep a spot BTC/USDT comparison separate from a BTC perpetual comparison, and report the band used for each.

| Which statistic? | Snapshot, average, median or percentile | Typical and stressed conditions are not the same |
| Which period? | Timestamp or sample window | Books change continuously |

- Select the exact market. Choose spot or the specific futures/perpetual contract, then select the quote currency and settlement currency. Do not use an ETH/USD book to estimate an ETH/USDT trade.
- Record the midpoint. Add the best bid and best ask and divide by two. This gives you a reference for calculating percentage distance and slippage.
- Set a consistent depth band. Compare BTC and ETH with the same percentage band when possible, such as 0.1% on each side. If you use fixed dollars, state that the bands differ in relative terms.
- Sum each side separately. Add the notional value of bids and asks inside the band. A book with $20 million of bids and $5 million of asks is not equally deep for buys and sells.
- Simulate your order size. Walk through the price levels your order would consume. For a sell, match your quantity against bids; for a buy, match it against asks. Calculate the volume-weighted average fill rather than relying on the first quote.
- Calculate estimated slippage. Compare the simulated average fill with the midpoint and record the side, size and timestamp. Repeat for the other asset without changing the assumptions.
- Check the spread and recent stability. A narrow spread is helpful, but watch whether quotes disappear or widen repeatedly as you refresh the book. A single favorable snapshot can be misleading.
- Include the execution method. A market order accepts the available levels and prioritizes completion. A limit order sets a price boundary but may not fill. If urgency is lower, splitting the order can reduce the amount consumed at once, though prices can move while you wait.
- Decide how to execute. If the simulated impact is large, split the order, use a limit price, reduce urgency or reassess the venue. Compare the expected impact with applicable trading fees before submitting.
For a meaningful comparison, repeat the check at the time you expect to trade. Historical medians cannot substitute for a live check when markets are moving. Record the timestamp and assumptions so a later review can distinguish a methodology problem from a genuine change in liquidity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the published figures can become stale
- Order books are dynamic. Resting orders are added, canceled and repriced continuously.
- Volatility changes liquidity. During abrupt moves, spreads can widen and displayed depth can vanish.
- Venue samples are limited. Eight or nine selected exchanges do not represent every exchange, region or quote currency.
- Aggregation can answer a different question. Asset-level figures may combine several instruments and venues. That is not equivalent to the depth of one pair on one exchange.
- Methodology matters. A fixed-dollar band, percentage band, median, average and percentile can rank the same markets differently.
- Pair conventions matter. BTC and ETH can have different quote currencies, contract specifications and minimum order increments, affecting how a practical order is routed.
CoinGecko’s quantitative comparison was updated September 30, 2026, and TokenInsight’s report was published September 24, 2026 using observations through September 14. Treat those dates as the freshness boundary for the quoted numbers. They are useful context, not a forecast of today’s executable price.
A practical decision framework
When BTC is the safer default for size
Use BTC as the starting point when you need to execute a large spot order and have no venue-specific evidence favoring ETH. The cited studies show deeper BTC books, lower or more stable reported slippage and tighter reported spreads across their selected samples.
When an ETH book may still be appropriate
Choose ETH when your exposure requires ETH, when your chosen pair has stronger live depth, or when the order is small enough that both books produce negligible impact. The CoinGecko study found more than $1 million of ETH depth on each side at its measured range on seven of eight exchanges, and TokenInsight recorded competitive ETH results for some reported conditions.
When neither published ranking is enough
Do a live simulation when the order is large, the market is volatile, the trade uses derivatives, or your venue is outside the cited samples. The exact pair, side, size and execution urgency matter more than an asset-wide label. If the trade is especially sensitive, check the book repeatedly rather than relying on one screen capture.
Frequently asked questions
Does Bitcoin have deeper order books than Ethereum?
In CoinGecko’s 2026 comparison of eight selected centralized exchanges, yes: median BTC depth was $29 million on the buy side and $37 million on the sell side, versus $13–14 million for ETH at the report’s stated bands. The bands were approximately ±$100 for BTC and ±$3 for ETH, so the ratio is specific to that methodology.
Which cryptocurrency has less slippage for a large trade?
TokenInsight’s September 2026 sample generally found lower and more stable BTC spot slippage for the reported sizes. Binance’s BTC sell at $100,000 had near-zero median slippage and 0.007% P90; at $500,000, Binance had 0.018% P90 and MEXC had 0.005% median. ETH can still be competitive at a particular venue and size.
Is a tighter spread proof that a market is deeper?
No. Spread measures only the best bid and ask. A market can have a tiny spread but little quantity behind those quotes. Check cumulative depth and simulate your actual order as well.
Should I compare spot or perpetual liquidity?
Compare the market you will actually trade. Spot and derivatives have different books and trading mechanics. TokenInsight’s futures ranking changed from MEXC at a 0.03% band to Bitget at 0.05%, showing why market type and measurement band must be stated.

Can ETH ever be more liquid than BTC?
Yes, on a particular pair, venue, side or moment. The broad BTC result comes from selected samples and does not guarantee that every ETH book is thinner. Live depth should decide a venue-specific execution.
How often should I check the order book?
Check it close to submission, and refresh repeatedly when volatility is high or the order is large. Resting orders can be canceled or repriced between observation and execution, so historical figures are a baseline rather than a live quote.
Bottom line for traders
Bitcoin had deeper selected-exchange trading liquidity than Ethereum in the latest 2026 comparisons: CoinGecko measured roughly $29 million of BTC buy-side and $37 million of sell-side median depth versus $13–14 million for ETH at its stated bands, and TokenInsight found generally lower BTC spot slippage with much tighter quoted spreads. Use that as a broad baseline, then verify the live order book for your exact pair, market type, order size and side before trading.
