Bitcoin Volatility FAQs: What Moves BTC Prices and What Investors Can Control

Bitcoin prices can swing as demand, perceived scarcity, regulation, economic conditions, network development, market-integrity concerns and speculation change. Investors cannot control BTC’s market price, but they can decide whether to invest, how much exposure to take and whether the risks fit their financial plan.

Why is Bitcoin so volatile?

Bitcoin volatility reflects several influences rather than one dependable price-setting mechanism. A company annual report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) says bitcoin prices are determined primarily using data from exchanges, over-the-counter markets and derivatives platforms. It lists possible influences on price, but does not establish a ranking or a formula that reliably predicts what will happen next. The filing should be read as a company’s disclosure of risks, not as a forecast.

  • Supply and demand: Changes in willingness to buy or sell can move prices. Perceived scarcity may shape demand, but scarcity alone does not guarantee a rising price.
  • Adoption and use: Changes in worldwide use, consumer preferences and demographics may affect how investors value bitcoin.
  • Protocol development: Maintenance and development of Bitcoin’s protocol can influence perceptions of its usefulness and prospects.
  • Regulation and public conditions: Regulatory developments, political events and broader economic conditions may alter demand or perceived risk.
  • Market integrity and safety: Fraudulent or illegitimate actors, concerns about manipulation and safety issues can affect confidence.
  • Speculation: Expectations about future appreciation can contribute to price movements, including rapid rises and sharp declines.

A separate SEC-filed bitcoin fund prospectus also points to supply and demand, possible manipulation, safety concerns, investor perceptions and uncertainty around an evolving, early-stage technology as volatility risks. Its discussion of past price swings is a risk disclosure, not a neutral forecast. The prospectus reports that bitcoin experienced repeated episodes of fast rises and steep drawdowns.

How large have Bitcoin’s price swings been?

Historical figures can illustrate past volatility, but they are not current measurements or predictions. One SEC-filed bitcoin fund prospectus reports 69.84% historical annualized volatility and an 81.51% maximum annual price decrease for the ten-year period ending July 31, 2024. Those figures describe that filing’s stated historical period; they should not be treated as today’s volatility or as a forecast. See the prospectus for its context.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

A company annual report gives these approximate bitcoin market-price ranges for its fiscal years. They are ranges reported by that filing, not current prices or universal quotes across exchanges. The annual report does not make them a measure of present-day volatility.

Fiscal year ended Approximate market-price range reported
September 30, 2025 $58,900–$124,500
September 30, 2024 $26,500–$73,800
September 30, 2023 $15,500–$31,900

No real-time volatility statistic or current BTC quote is established here. A historical range or volatility measure should not be presented as if it were current.

Can investors control Bitcoin volatility?

No. An individual investor cannot stabilize bitcoin’s market price or control the forces that move it. The choices within an investor’s control concern exposure and planning: whether to invest, how much of a portfolio to put at risk, whether the investment fits a time horizon and risk tolerance, and whether the product’s terms are understood.

The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy advised investors to make and follow an investment plan, consider how much of an overall portfolio is allocated to speculative or short-term investments, think about asset allocation and diversification, and understand a product’s terms and risks. It states: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” This is general investor guidance, not individualized advice. Does a Bitcoin ETF or ETP protect against price swings?

No. Holding bitcoin exposure through an exchange-traded product (ETP) changes how the exposure is held; it does not remove bitcoin price volatility. SEC guidance says bitcoin ETP investments remain speculative and subject to bitcoin’s price volatility. Products can have different structures, terms and disclosed risks, so review the specific product rather than assuming all ETPs work the same way. The SEC’s ETP bulletin, dated September 9, 2024, explains relevant considerations.
