1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe price you see when buying bitcoin is rarely the whole cost. Your all-in expense can include an execution commission, a spread built into the quoted price, a charge from your card or bank, and a separate withdrawal fee that reflects network conditions. To compare offers fairly, calculate how much bitcoin arrives for the same fiat amount after every charge—not just the advertised trading percentage.
What bitcoin trading fees actually include
A bitcoin purchase can pass through several pricing layers. An order-book exchange normally shows a commission when your order executes. An instant-buy screen may show one final price that already includes a spread, then add a payment fee. Moving bitcoin to an external address creates another charge, usually related to the exchange’s estimate of the network transaction cost.

- Trading commission: A percentage charged when an order executes. The rate depends on the product, pair, account tier, volume schedule and sometimes a promotion.
- Spread: The difference between the buy and sell prices available at that moment. An instant-buy quote can embed this difference in the displayed price.
- Payment-method charge: A card issuer, bank or payment processor may add a fee that is separate from the exchange’s own fee.
- Withdrawal charge: A fee shown when you send bitcoin to an external wallet. It can include the exchange’s service margin and an estimate of the underlying network cost.
These components are not interchangeable. A platform with a low stated commission can still be more expensive if its quoted buy price is farther from the market, its card fee is higher or its withdrawal charge is larger.

Trading commissions: maker, taker and account tiers
When the commission is charged
On an order-book product, the exchange charges a commission when an order is executed. Binance Support states: “You need to pay a trading fee for every successful trade on Binance Spot.” That article was published on March 24, 2022, and updated January 6, 2026. Its example calculates a 0.1% fee and explains that the fee is charged in the asset received: when you buy, the fee can be taken from the bitcoin you receive; when you sell, it can be taken from the currency you receive.

- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
A limit order that adds liquidity to the order book may qualify as a maker order. An order that immediately matches existing liquidity is a taker order. The exact classification can depend on how the order executes, so read the exchange’s definition rather than assuming every limit order receives the maker rate.
Example of a published schedule
Binance’s official fiat-pair schedule, accessed in 2026, lists regular-user rates of 0.1000% for maker orders and 0.2000% for taker orders. Higher VIP levels have different rates, and the schedule lists a discount for paying fees with BNB. Those figures describe the listed fiat-pair product and regular-user tier; they are not a universal bitcoin rate, a market average or a promise that the same rates apply in every country or to every BTC pair.
| Schedule item | Published figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Regular-user maker | 0.1000% | Applies to the specified Binance fiat-pair schedule, subject to the product, jurisdiction and account terms in force when you trade. |
| Regular-user taker | 0.2000% | Applies to the specified Binance fiat-pair schedule; an immediately matched order may be taker. |
| Higher VIP levels | Different rates | Eligibility and pricing depend on Binance’s volume or account criteria. |
| BNB payment discount | Listed separately by Binance | A discount is conditional; confirm that it is enabled and available for your account and product. |
Always identify the exchange product, geographic edition, pair, account tier and date when recording a fee. A rate shown for a fiat spot market should not be silently generalized to instant purchases, derivatives or a different region.

What a spread means
The spread is the gap between the price at which you can buy and the price at which you can sell at a particular moment. If an instant-buy service quotes bitcoin at a higher price than the price available to a seller, that difference is part of your cost even when the screen emphasizes a separate “fee.”
Kraken’s Instant Buy/Sell terms say that transactions are subject to fees and a spread included in the transaction price. The terms state that the spread depends on factors including market conditions, the asset, order size, trade type, VIP status and trading or custodial activity. Kraken says spreads on that service typically vary from 0% to 1.5% of the amount and can reach 3% in extreme conditions. Those are Kraken’s disclosed figures for its service, not an independent statistic for bitcoin or for all exchanges.

How to detect a spread in practice
- Note the reference market price shown by the platform, if one is provided.
- Record the exact buy quote and the bitcoin amount you would receive before confirming.
- Check whether a separate commission is added or whether the quote is presented as “fee included.”
- Compare the effective price: divide the fiat amount that leaves your account by the bitcoin amount delivered, then compare that result with a contemporaneous order-book price.
The comparison is meaningful only if the timestamps, order sizes and payment methods match. A rapidly moving market can widen the apparent difference even when a platform has not changed its published fee.
Payment methods and third-party charges
The same exchange can produce different totals for an account-balance purchase, bank transfer, debit card or credit card. Kraken’s terms note that fees can differ by selected payment method, including account balance, card and ACH, and warn that a payment provider may impose additional charges. A card issuer might classify a transaction in a way that creates a cash-advance or foreign-exchange fee; the exchange cannot necessarily display that cost in its own quote.

Do not treat an exchange’s “free deposit” label as proof that your bank or card issuer will charge nothing.
How to calculate the fee on a completed trade
Percentage calculation
For a simple percentage commission, use:
fee = transaction value × fee rate
For example, a 0.1000% rate is 0.001 in decimal form. On a 1,000-unit fiat trade, the commission would be 1 unit of fiat if the fee is assessed on that transaction value. A 0.2000% rate is 0.002, which would be 2 units on the same notional amount. These are arithmetic illustrations using the published rates above, not a quote for your account.
When the fee is taken from the asset received
Suppose an order produces 0.01000000 BTC before fees and the applicable commission is 0.1%. If the exchange deducts the fee from the asset received, the delivered amount would be 0.00999000 BTC before any other adjustment. If the exchange instead charges fiat, the bitcoin amount can remain 0.01000000 BTC while the cash debit increases. Read the product’s calculation method; do not infer it from another market on the same platform.

Effective all-in price
To compare two quotes, calculate:
effective price per BTC = (fiat paid + payment charge) ÷ BTC received
If you plan to withdraw, also record the bitcoin shown after the withdrawal fee. A quote that delivers slightly more bitcoin but charges a much larger withdrawal fee may leave less bitcoin in your destination wallet.
Bitcoin withdrawal fees, minimums and network choice
Why the withdrawal charge changes
An external withdrawal is different from an internal transfer between users on the same platform. Binance says its withdrawal charge is based on estimated network fees, can fluctuate with congestion, varies by the network selected and is displayed on the withdrawal page. Kraken publishes per-asset withdrawal fees and minimums but says the final charge can differ and is shown at confirmation. Coinbase Global Exchange explains that its network fee is based on an estimate of anticipated transaction fees and is disclosed when the transaction is made.
These disclosures do not establish one fixed bitcoin withdrawal fee across exchanges. The amount can change during a busy period, after a fee-schedule update or when you select a different supported network.
Network compatibility is a safety requirement
Choose only a network that the destination wallet or service explicitly supports. Binance warns users to select a network compatible with the destination address. Sending through an incompatible network can make funds difficult or impossible to recover, even if the address itself appears valid.

- Review the minimum withdrawal amount and the estimated arrival amount.
- Read the final confirmation for the network fee, total deduction and any memo or tag requirement.
- For a new destination, send a small test amount when the costs and operational risk justify it.
A minimum is a rule on the amount you may withdraw; it is not the same thing as the fee. Both values can change, so capture them from the live confirmation screen rather than an old help-page example.

Comparison is useful only when every material variable is held constant. Use this worksheet for each platform or product:
| Variable | Keep constant by recording |
|---|---|
| Purchase size | The same fiat amount or the same target bitcoin amount. |
| Order type | Instant purchase, market order or limit order; note whether the order is maker or taker. |
| Payment method | Account balance, bank transfer, card or another method, including any provider fee. |
| Account assumptions | Tier, 30-day volume, fee-token discount and promotional status. |
| Price evidence | The quoted buy price, bitcoin received and timestamp. |
| Withdrawal route | Destination, selected network, minimum and final fee shown at confirmation. |
| Jurisdiction | Country or region and the exact product available there. |
Convert every charge to the same fiat currency, then compare the amount of bitcoin that reaches the intended destination. Record the time checked because spreads, promotions, supported networks and network-related charges are volatile. A published schedule is useful for understanding the rules, but it is not a substitute for the live pre-trade and pre-withdrawal quote.
Common mistakes that make fees look higher
Looking only at the headline commission
A “0% commission” message can still coexist with a spread, a payment-provider fee or a withdrawal charge. Ask for the final amount of bitcoin delivered, not just the percentage printed beside the order button.

Using a rate from the wrong tier or product
VIP schedules, fee-token discounts and high-volume rates are conditional. A regular-user spot rate cannot be used to price an instant-buy transaction without checking that product’s terms.
Ignoring the withdrawal minimum
A low nominal withdrawal fee does not help if your planned amount is below the minimum. Confirm both before buying, especially when transferring a small balance.
Selecting a network solely by price
The cheapest displayed network is unsuitable if the receiving service does not support it. Compatibility comes before fee optimization.
Does a hardware wallet reduce exchange fees?
No. A hardware wallet can give you control of private keys after you withdraw bitcoin, but it does not lower the exchange’s trading commission, spread, payment charge or network-related withdrawal fee. Consider self-custody only if you understand seed-phrase security, backup and recovery. The relevant fee question remains the same: what amount will leave the exchange and arrive at the address you control after the final displayed deduction?
What to check before pressing Buy or Withdraw
- Is the displayed price a direct market quote or an instant-buy quote that includes a spread?
- What commission applies to this exact product, pair, account tier and region?
- Is the fee charged in fiat, bitcoin or another asset?
- Will your card, bank or payment provider add a separate charge?
- How much bitcoin will you receive after the trade executes?
- What withdrawal fee and minimum appear on the live confirmation screen?
- Does the destination support the selected network and require a memo or tag?
- Have you recorded the timestamp, currency and assumptions so another quote can be compared fairly?
Fee rates, spreads, promotions, supported networks and withdrawal charges can change by geography, account status, asset and market conditions. Recheck the official schedule and the live confirmation immediately before committing funds.
