Bitcoin briefly climbed above $86,000 early on October 5, 2026, as traders reacted to softer U.S. employment news and reduced bets on an October Federal Reserve rate hike. The move did not hold: later CoinDesk updates put Bitcoin near $85,500, while reported hike odds rose again. These were fast-changing market snapshots, not current prices or a Fed decision.
What happened to Bitcoin on October 5?
CoinDesk reported that Bitcoin rose about 1% to just above $86,000 early Monday, October 5, after a weak U.S. employment report. In later coverage, Bitcoin had pulled back to about $85,500 and was roughly flat over the preceding 24 hours. A related CoinDesk market article said the price had approached $87,000 before reversing below $86,000, describing another rally that stalled. CoinDesk live coverage CoinDesk market report

That sequence matters: “above $86,000” describes an early-session moment, not a level Bitcoin held throughout the day. The reporting tied the move to the jobs news and shifting rate expectations, but does not show that the employment report alone caused the price change.
Why did traders reassess an October rate hike?
CoinDesk’s live updates connected the early Bitcoin rise with softer employment data and a decline in bets on an October rate increase. The report attributed a September payroll gain of 29,000 to QCP Capital. It also gave differing consensus forecasts across updates: one cited 84,000 expected, while another cited 90,000. Those figures should be understood as separate reporting snapshots, not combined into a single definitive forecast comparison. CoinDesk live coverage

- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
QCP Capital was also cited for a 4.2% unemployment rate and 3% year-over-year wage growth. CoinDesk reported the 10-year Treasury yield at 5.25% in one update and 5.33% later. These are attributed figures and intraday snapshots in the coverage, not independently verified here against the original statistical release or a complete yield history.
What does “price out a hike” mean?
It means market prices came to imply lower odds of a rate increase; it does not mean the Federal Reserve had ruled one out. CME Group says its FedWatch probabilities are implied by 30-Day Fed Funds futures prices. In CME’s words: “Use CME FedWatch to track the probabilities of changes to the Fed rate, as implied by 30-Day Fed Funds futures prices.” CME FedWatch

Because those estimates reflect futures-market pricing, they can move as traders respond to new information. They are not official Fed guidance or a promise about what policymakers will do.
Were October hike odds really near zero?
No such conclusion follows from the reported updates. CoinDesk said short-term odds fell to about 15% before rising to 24% later in the coverage. That change shows expectations were fluid, rather than an October hike being definitively removed from consideration. These are odds reported during October 5 coverage, not a standing forecast. What the $87,200 threshold meant
CoinDesk attributed to QCP Capital the view that acceptance above $87,200 would be needed to confirm the next leg higher. That was a technical threshold cited in the October 5 coverage, not a guarantee of a breakout. The same coverage described Bitcoin approaching $87,000 and then reversing below $86,000, illustrating why an intraday level should not be mistaken for sustained confirmation. CoinDesk live coverage

How to read the market signals
The employment report, futures-implied rate expectations, Treasury yields and Bitcoin’s price are related market indicators, but they are not interchangeable. A softer jobs reading may affect expectations for monetary policy; those expectations may in turn influence risk appetite. The October 5 coverage offers a market narrative connecting these developments, not proof that any one factor determined Bitcoin’s price.
