Bitcoin was trading near $81,002 on October 15, 2026, after an intraday low of $80,444, as hotter-than-expected U.S. September inflation revived concern that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again. The move put the market’s immediate focus on the $79,500 support level, the possibility of a break below $81,000, and whether tighter monetary policy will keep risk assets under pressure.
What happened to Bitcoin
Bitcoin’s decline followed a U.S. consumer-price report showing prices up 3.7% year over year and 0.6% month over month in September. Energy costs were identified as a major source of the pressure. The figures increased expectations that the Federal Reserve may need to keep policy restrictive or even raise its benchmark rate again.

Bitcoin traded around $81,002 after touching $80,444 during the session. A Reuters-attributed market report put the decline at 3.2%, to $80,791.4, and said spot Bitcoin exchange-traded-fund flows turned negative after the inflation release, recording a reported $261.5 million outflow.

Why hotter CPI can push Bitcoin lower
Higher inflation changes the interest-rate outlook
Investors had assigned a 29.3% implied probability to an October Federal Reserve rate increase, up from 17.7% one week earlier, according to CME FedWatch figures cited in the coverage. The Fed’s reported target range after its September decision was 3.75% to 4%.
Higher policy-rate expectations can reduce demand for assets that do not generate cash flow, including Bitcoin, because safer dollar-denominated instruments may offer more attractive yields. The adjustment can also prompt traders to reduce leverage and sell positions that benefited from easier financial conditions.

The dollar and Treasury yields are the next transmission channel
A hot inflation report typically makes traders watch the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields. A stronger dollar can make Bitcoin more expensive for holders using other currencies, while rising Treasury yields can pull capital toward government debt. The available October 15 reporting identifies the rate-expectation shock but does not establish a specific dollar or yield move; those indicators must be monitored alongside Bitcoin rather than assumed.
ETF flows provided market confirmation
The reported $261.5 million spot-Bitcoin-ETF outflow is significant because it shows selling pressure from a regulated investment channel at the same time that macro expectations turned less favorable. ETF flows are a daily signal, not proof of a lasting trend: subsequent inflows or outflows can quickly change the picture.

How close is Bitcoin to key levels?
$79,500: the bullish line cited by an analyst
Stephen Wundke, strategy and revenue director at Algoz, said, “On the bullish side as long as BTC stays above $79,500 we can keep the dream alive.” That is an analyst’s technical framing, not a guaranteed floor. A decisive move below it would weaken the near-term bullish setup described in that comment.
$76,000 to $83,000: the proposed October range
Wundke also said, “Without a clear catalyst to move things higher I fear we are range bound with BTC between $76,000 and $83,000 for the rest of October.” Under that view, $83,000 is the upper boundary traders would need to reclaim for a stronger breakout, while $76,000 marks the lower end of the proposed range. The range is an opinion and can be invalidated by a major policy decision, a sharp change in flows or another macroeconomic surprise.

$81,000 is a round-number test, not a formal support level
Bitcoin’s move around $81,000 matters psychologically because round numbers often attract orders, but the available October 15 reporting does not establish $81,000 as a confirmed technical support or resistance level. The more explicitly cited reference point is $79,500.
What another Fed hike could mean
| Market condition | Likely Bitcoin pressure | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Headline inflation cools and core inflation also eases | Rate-hike expectations could fall, supporting risk appetite | Next CPI release, Fed communications and ETF inflows |
| Headline inflation remains elevated but core inflation slows | Mixed: energy may keep headline CPI high while underlying pressure improves | Core-CPI direction and Treasury yields |
| Headline and core inflation accelerate | Greater risk of a hike, higher yields and a break toward lower Bitcoin support | FedWatch probabilities, dollar strength and ETF outflows |
| Fed-hike odds rise but ETF and corporate-treasury demand improves | Macro pressure could be partly absorbed by fresh spot demand | Daily ETF creations and redemptions and disclosed treasury purchases |
The September report supplied headline CPI figures but did not provide a core-inflation result in the cited material. That distinction matters: traders will judge whether inflation is broadening beyond energy and whether underlying price growth is moving toward or away from the Fed’s goal.

Why the Fed’s inflation target remains central
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack wrote, “They’re starting to accept high inflation as just a fact of life.” The remark highlights the policy risk: if inflation stays above target, officials may be reluctant to ease policy even when markets expect lower rates. CNBC analysis cited in the coverage said inflation had remained above the Fed’s 2% target for 66 consecutive months.
That history does not determine Bitcoin’s next move, but it explains why one hot monthly report can have an outsized effect on rate expectations. The market is pricing the path of policy, not merely the latest Bitcoin chart.
Quick Recap
How to monitor the next Bitcoin move
- Check the inflation mix. Separate headline CPI, energy effects and the direction of core inflation when the next report is released.
- Track the rate probability. Compare the latest implied October-hike probability with the 29.3% level reported on October 15 and the previous 17.7% reading.
- Watch dollar and Treasury yields. A simultaneous rise in both would generally indicate tighter financial conditions for risk assets, while a decline could relieve pressure.
- Review spot-ETF flows. Look for whether the reported $261.5 million outflow is followed by additional redemptions or a return to net inflows.
- Mark the cited price levels. Holding above $79,500 would preserve the bullish condition described by Wundke; losing it would make the $76,000 lower-range area more relevant, while a move above $83,000 would challenge the range-bound view.
What is established—and what is not
- The October 15, 2026 trading window included a Bitcoin price near $81,002 and an intraday low of $80,444.
- September U.S. CPI rose 3.7% year over year and 0.6% month over month, with energy cited as a major pressure.
- Implied October Fed-hike odds rose from 17.7% to 29.3% in the cited week.
- A reported $261.5 million spot-Bitcoin-ETF outflow followed the CPI release.
- The cited material does not prove that another rate hike will force Bitcoin below $81,000. The outcome depends on inflation’s follow-through, financial conditions and demand flows.
