Bitcoin Taxes Explained: What Happens When You Buy, Sell, or Transfer Bitcoin?

For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, bitcoin is property. Buying it with dollars normally is not a taxable event; it establishes your cost basis. Tax generally comes when you sell, exchange, spend, or otherwise dispose of the units. Moving bitcoin between wallets or accounts that you own is generally non-taxable, but a transfer to someone else, a payment, or a bitcoin-denominated fee can create a reportable disposition. Your result depends on the units’ adjusted basis, holding period, value received, and whether the activity is personal investing or a business.

The federal rule that controls bitcoin taxes

The Internal Revenue Service applies its property rules to digital assets such as bitcoin. That means each unit has a basis (usually its dollar cost), and a taxable gain or loss is generally measured when you dispose of that unit. The IRS’s current overview is Digital assets.

Which bitcoin transactions are taxable?

Transaction What happens for federal tax Typical character or form
Buy bitcoin with dollars Usually an acquisition, not a disposition. The dollar cost becomes basis. No immediate capital gain or loss; retain acquisition records.
Sell bitcoin for dollars Dispose of the units. Amount realized minus adjusted basis produces gain or loss. Capital gain or loss for investment holdings; Form 8949 and Schedule D generally apply.
Exchange bitcoin for another digital asset The bitcoin given up is treated as disposed of at the value of what you receive. Usually capital gain or loss for investment holdings; Form 8949 and Schedule D.
Spend bitcoin on goods or services Payment is a disposition, even though you receive merchandise or services rather than cash. Personal investment activity generally produces capital gain or loss; business activity can involve ordinary income and business reporting.
Move bitcoin between wallets, addresses, or accounts you own Generally non-taxable because ownership has not changed. Keep evidence that both sides belong to you; an information return does not by itself make the transfer taxable.
Pay a network or transfer fee in bitcoin The bitcoin used for the fee is a disposition and needs its own basis and value records. Character follows the underlying activity; analyze the fee component separately.

The IRS lists sales, exchanges, spending, and fee payments among dispositions in its digital-assets guidance. The self-transfer rule appears in the IRS digital-asset FAQ.

Buying bitcoin: what you owe at purchase

A dollar purchase normally creates basis rather than current taxable income. Record the bitcoin type, acquisition date and time, number of units, fair market value in U.S. dollars, and transaction fees or other amounts included in your cost. The value and basis must remain tied to the specific units you later dispose of.

Why the purchase date matters

Your holding period starts when you acquire the units. A later disposition held for one year or less is short-term; a disposition held for more than one year is long-term. The threshold is measured for the particular units sold, exchanged, or spent, not for your wallet as a whole.

Fees and records

Save exchange confirmations, wallet statements, transaction IDs, time stamps, and dollar conversions. A platform’s export may show quantities but omit the information needed to prove basis or holding period, so preserve contemporaneous records independently.

Selling bitcoin for cash

When you sell bitcoin for dollars, the general calculation is:

Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis.

Amount realized is generally the cash and other value received, reduced by allowable selling costs. Adjusted basis is your original dollar cost as modified by applicable adjustments. If the result is positive, it is a gain; if negative, it is a loss.

Short-term versus long-term

Units held one year or less produce short-term capital results. Units held more than one year produce long-term capital results. The IRS explains this holding-period distinction in its digital-assets guidance and its digital-asset frequently asked questions.

Illustrative calculation

Suppose you buy 0.20 bitcoin for $8,000 total and later sell those same units for $11,000 after more than one year. Ignoring fees and other adjustments, the long-term gain is $3,000. If the sale occurred within one year, the $3,000 result would be short-term instead. These figures are an example of the method, not a tax-rate estimate.

Swapping bitcoin for another digital asset

An exchange of bitcoin for another token is a disposition of the bitcoin. Use the fair market value of the asset received at the time of the swap as the amount realized, then compare it with the adjusted basis of the bitcoin surrendered. The newly received asset generally takes a basis equal to its dollar value at the exchange, plus any properly includible costs.

Do not treat a crypto-to-crypto swap as tax-deferred merely because no dollars changed hands. Keep the timestamp, units surrendered, units received, dollar values, fees, and platform confirmation.

Spending bitcoin on goods or services

Paying a merchant, contractor, or other provider with bitcoin disposes of the units used for the payment. For a personal investment, compare the dollar value of what you receive with the basis of the bitcoin spent. A business that accepts bitcoin must also account for its receipt as business income and follow the applicable business-record and reporting rules.

Transferring bitcoin between your own wallets

A transfer from a wallet, address, or account belonging to you to another wallet, address, or account that also belongs to you is generally non-taxable. IRS FAQ Q38 states that this remains true even if an exchange or platform issues an information return for the movement: “No. If you transfer virtual currency from a wallet, address, or account belonging to you, to another wallet, address, or account that also belongs to you, then the transfer is a non-taxable event, even if you receive an information return from an exchange or platform as a result of the transfer.” See the IRS digital-asset FAQ.

Proving continuity of ownership

Keep the sending and receiving addresses, account statements, transaction hash, date, quantity, and evidence linking both wallets to you. A transfer to a spouse, friend, customer, exchange controlled by another owner, or other person is not automatically covered by the self-transfer rule; ownership and the legal nature of that movement must be evaluated.

Bitcoin-paid transfer fees

If you use bitcoin to pay a network or transfer fee, those units are disposed of. Record the fee quantity, its dollar value when paid, and the basis of the units selected for the fee. The IRS specifically includes paying a transfer fee with digital assets among dispositions on its digital-assets page.

How to calculate basis when you have multiple lots

Bitcoin acquired at different prices creates different tax lots. The IRS permits specific identification when you can substantiate the units disposed of. For each unit or lot, retain:

  • Acquisition date and time.
  • Basis and dollar value at acquisition.
  • Disposition date and time.
  • Value at disposition.
  • Proceeds attributable to the units disposed of.

IRS FAQ Q40 describes these substantiation requirements. If you cannot specifically identify the units, the legacy IRS virtual-currency FAQ says units are treated as disposed of chronologically (FIFO, first in, first out). Read the current digital-asset FAQ together with the legacy virtual-currency FAQ and use a consistent method supported by your records.

Practical lot-selection workflow

  1. Export every exchange and wallet history for the tax year.
  2. Normalize dates and times to a documented time zone and convert each transaction to U.S. dollars.
  3. Match each disposition to a specific lot when your records prove the units, basis, and holding period.
  4. Apply chronological ordering when specific identification is unavailable.
  5. Reconcile total units acquired, disposed of, transferred, and still held.

Which IRS forms report bitcoin transactions?

Capital-asset sales and exchanges

For bitcoin held as an investment or other capital asset, report sales and exchanges on Form 8949 and carry the totals to Schedule D. Your statement should support each transaction’s proceeds, basis, adjustment codes when required, and short- or long-term classification.

Ordinary and business income

Ordinary non-business digital-asset income is reported on Form 1040 or Schedule 1, as applicable. Business receipts and expenses may require Schedule C and other business forms. The correct form depends on why and how the income arose, not merely on the fact that bitcoin was involved.

Form 1099-DA: the 2025–2026 reporting transition

For broker transactions after 2025, Form 1099-DA is the information-return framework. The 2026 Form 1099-DA instructions state: “2026 and beyond—Mandatory reporting of gross proceeds for all digital assets, mandatory reporting of basis information for digital assets that are covered securities, and voluntary reporting of basis information for digital assets that are noncovered securities.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What changed for 2025 transactions

The reporting regime begins January 1, 2025, for covered post-2024 transactions. IRS Tax Tip 2026-07 says brokers must furnish 2025 Form 1099-DA statements by February 17, 2026. Most 2025 statements will not include basis, so you may need to reconstruct basis from your own acquisition records.

Whether or not you receive Form 1099-DA, you must report the related income, gain, or loss. A missing statement does not eliminate the filing obligation, and a statement’s proceeds figure does not prove that its basis is complete. The IRS explains the 2025 transition in Reminders for taxpayers about digital assets.

Covered versus noncovered securities

For covered digital-asset securities, basis reporting is mandatory under the future regime. For noncovered securities, basis reporting is voluntary. Consequently, a 1099-DA may show proceeds without a usable basis, especially for 2025 activity. Compare the form with your lot-level records before entering figures on Form 8949.

A records-to-return checklist

  • Download statements from every broker, exchange, and wallet before accounts close or data expires.
  • Keep acquisition and disposition date/time, units, dollar values, fees, transaction IDs, and wallet addresses.
  • Separate purchases, sales, swaps, spending, self-transfers, third-party transfers, and fee payments.
  • Document which wallets and accounts you own to support non-taxable self-transfers.
  • Choose and document specific identification or FIFO when identification is unavailable.
  • Reconcile broker Form 1099-DA proceeds to your own transaction ledger; investigate omissions and duplicates.
  • Use Form 8949 and Schedule D for capital-asset dispositions, and the appropriate Form 1040, Schedule 1, or Schedule C treatment for ordinary or business income.
  • Retain the records supporting every reported number and every non-taxable transfer position.

Common mistakes that create avoidable problems

Assuming every wallet movement is taxable

Moving units between wallets you own is generally not a disposition, but a transfer to a different owner is not automatically protected. Establish ownership with records rather than relying on the address alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every wallet movement is tax-free

A self-transfer does not shelter bitcoin used to pay a fee, sent as payment, swapped for another asset, or delivered to another owner. Classify each leg of a transaction.

Using a 1099-DA as a complete tax ledger

For 2025 statements, basis will often be absent. Even in later years, noncovered securities may have voluntary basis reporting. Your own lot records remain essential.

Ignoring holding periods

Use the acquisition date of the actual units disposed of. Applying the oldest or newest date without a supportable identification method can change short-term treatment to long-term treatment or vice versa.

Mixing personal and business activity

Investment dispositions and business receipts can have different character and forms. Keep separate books and classify activity according to its purpose and facts.
