Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most people, buying Bitcoin is simpler; mining only makes financial sense when you can secure competitive electricity, efficient hardware, reliable operation and enough scale to absorb overhead. Buying removes the ASIC, facility and power-management burden, but it does not remove Bitcoin’s price volatility or custody risk. Mining gives you Bitcoin through an operating business whose output and cost change with network competition, machine efficiency, uptime and local conditions.
There is no universal return winner. Compare both choices using the same starting capital, holding period, Bitcoin-price scenarios and fee assumptions, then treat the result as a range rather than a promise.

What you are actually choosing
Buying Bitcoin is a financial purchase: you exchange currency for an asset at the market price, pay acquisition and custody costs, and bear the result of Bitcoin’s price movement. Mining is an operating activity: you purchase specialized SHA-256 ASIC equipment, install and power it, maintain connectivity and cooling, and receive uncertain Bitcoin output as the network’s competition changes.
The two strategies therefore have different sources of exposure. A buyer’s main variable is the Bitcoin price, plus execution, custody and security. A miner faces those same Bitcoin-price movements on any coins retained, while also carrying equipment, electricity, facility, uptime, maintenance, regulation and financing risks.

How Bitcoin mining economics work
An ASIC performs hashes in competition with miners worldwide. Your expected share of rewards depends on the machine’s hashrate relative to the network, its uptime and the rules and conditions used by the mining pool. Network hashrate and difficulty can change, so a production estimate made on one date is not a fixed allowance.
Revenue consists of the Bitcoin and transaction-fee revenue credited to your operation, less pool fees and any other deductions. Costs continue even when a machine is offline or when the Bitcoin received is worth less than expected. A useful model keeps output, price and costs as separate lines instead of calling mined coins “free.”
Capital expenditure
- ASIC miner purchase and delivery.
- Electrical circuits, distribution equipment and professional installation.
- Cooling, ventilation, sound control and physical space changes.
- Networking equipment, monitoring systems and safety hardware.
- Deposits or setup charges for a hosted site, when applicable.
The installed cost can be materially higher than the advertised machine price. A home installation may also need service-panel capacity, airflow management and a plan for continuous heat and noise. A hosted installation replaces some of those tasks with rent or a hosting charge; it does not eliminate operating or counterparty risk.

Recurring operating costs
- Electricity: consumption multiplied by the tariff, demand charges and contract terms.
- Hosting or premises: rent, site fees, security and utilities not included in the power rate.
- Pool and payment fees: deductions that reduce the Bitcoin credited to you.
- Maintenance: fans, power supplies, boards, cabling, cleaning and technician time.
- Downtime: lost production during outages, repairs, network failures or curtailment.
- Insurance, taxes and compliance: costs depend on location, ownership structure and operations.
Riot’s SEC filing illustrates the breadth of an industrial operator’s cost categories, including power, compensation, insurance on miners, ground rent, water, property tax and other costs. Those disclosures describe a large company and should not be converted into a household budget.
Depreciation and residual value
ASICs lose economic value as newer, more efficient machines enter the network and competition changes the output available per unit of capacity. Include an expected useful life, repair profile, resale value and disposal cost. If you omit depreciation, a calculation can show a low operating cost while failing to recover the capital invested in the machine.
Ionic Digital has explained that one cited average cost-to-earn measure excludes depreciation and has shown that including mining-equipment depreciation changes the reported figure. This is why every “cost per Bitcoin” number must state whether it is electricity-only, cash operating cost or a full economic cost.
Why electricity and efficiency dominate mining
Electricity is usually the largest controllable expense. Your result depends on the actual tariff, taxes, demand charges, curtailment rules and whether the price is fixed or can change. An industry median is not a substitute for your bill.

The Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance’s 2025 Cambridge Digital Mining Industry Report estimated industry-wide ASIC efficiency at 28.2 joules per terahash (J/TH) by June 2024. That is an industry estimate, not the specification of a particular machine. A prospective miner must verify the exact model’s hashrate, power draw, voltage, warranty and operating temperature.
The same report estimated annualized Bitcoin-mining electricity consumption at 138 TWh, equivalent to approximately 0.54% of global electricity use under its methodology. These figures describe the industry, not the consumption or profitability of an individual installation.
Among surveyed miners, electricity represented more than 80% of cash-based operating expense. Reported median costs were $45 per megawatt-hour for electricity only and $55.5 per megawatt-hour all-in. They are survey medians for participating mining firms, not retail household tariffs. A residential customer may face a very different rate structure, and a hosted site may quote a bundled price with conditions that are not comparable to a raw energy tariff.
Buying Bitcoin: simpler operation, real financial risk
Buying avoids purchasing, installing and running an ASIC. You can choose the amount and timing of exposure without estimating machine life, network difficulty or facility capacity. Your direct calculation is comparatively short: starting cash minus acquisition costs becomes Bitcoin held, subject to custody and execution assumptions.
Price volatility
The SEC’s Investor.gov alert warns that Bitcoin’s exchange rate has historically been very volatile and could decline drastically. A purchase can lose value even when there are no operating problems. A buyer should define the maximum loss they can tolerate, the holding period and whether they will keep the position through large drawdowns.
Custody and security
Bitcoin held through an exchange or digital wallet does not have protections identical to those commonly associated with U.S. brokerage securities accounts and bank accounts, according to the SEC alert. Exchange shutdowns, theft and fraud are additional risks discussed in that warning. Decide who controls the keys, how recovery works, what devices are trusted and how transactions will be authorized. A lower operating burden is not the same as lower asset-security risk.
Costs a buyer should model
- Acquisition spread or trading fee.
- Deposit, withdrawal or network charges where applicable.
- Custody cost, including hardware, professional service or secure storage.
- Tax consequences of purchases, sales, transfers or other dispositions in your jurisdiction.
- Opportunity cost of holding cash rather than Bitcoin or another asset.
A fair side-by-side calculation
Use one spreadsheet or calculator with two columns. Do not compare a miner’s gross coin production with a buyer’s net investment value, and do not use different time periods. The following procedure keeps the comparison consistent.

- Set the starting capital. Allocate the same amount to the mining path and the buying path. For mining, reserve enough cash for installation and operating losses; do not assume every dollar can be spent on the ASIC.
- Choose a holding period. State the start and end dates or the number of months. Hardware depreciation, resale and market volatility cannot be evaluated without a time horizon.
- Record the electricity assumption. Enter the exact price per kilowatt-hour or the host’s quoted rate, including demand charges, taxes, minimums and escalation clauses. Convert units carefully if a provider quotes dollars per megawatt-hour.
- Record machine specifications. Use the specific ASIC’s hashrate, power draw, efficiency, voltage, warranty and expected uptime. Do not substitute an industry-average J/TH figure for a model specification.
- Estimate production as a range. Vary network difficulty, network hashrate, reward and fee assumptions, pool fees and uptime. Mark every assumption with its date because these conditions change.
- Include full mining costs. Add delivery, electrical work, cooling, hosting, rent, networking, maintenance, insurance, taxes, downtime and financing. Subtract a defensible resale value and include disposal costs if the machine may become uneconomic.
- Model the buying path. Apply acquisition fees and custody costs to the same starting capital. State whether Bitcoin remains on a platform, in a wallet you control or with another custodian.
- Apply identical price scenarios. Use at least adverse, middle and favorable Bitcoin-price cases at the end of the period. For mining, value the coins produced and any residual equipment; for buying, value the Bitcoin held.
- Report separate outcomes. Show Bitcoin accumulated, cash spent, ending asset value and net gain or loss. Also show a break-even Bitcoin price only if every input and inclusion is disclosed.
A compact representation is:
Mining net result = value of mined Bitcoin + equipment resale − initial installation and equipment cost − operating costs − financing, taxes and selling costsBuying net result = value of Bitcoin held − acquisition cost − custody, transaction, financing, taxes and selling costs
These are comparison structures, not guaranteed-return formulas. Mining output and network difficulty are uncertain, and a spreadsheet can be precise while its assumptions are wrong.
Industry figures and what they do—and do not—tell you
| Figure | Scope and qualification | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 28.2 J/TH | Estimated industry-wide ASIC efficiency by June 2024 in Cambridge’s 2025 report | Context for industry progress; not a specification for your chosen ASIC |
| 138 TWh annually | Estimated annualized electricity associated with Bitcoin mining under the report’s methodology | Scale of industry electricity use; not a forecast of your bill |
| Approximately 0.54% | Estimated share of global electricity use corresponding to that annualized consumption | Global context only |
| More than 80% | Share of surveyed miners’ cash-based operational expenses attributed to electricity | Shows why tariff and efficiency are central; survey result, not a household rule |
| $45/MWh | Reported median electricity-only cost among surveyed miners | Benchmark for participating firms; not a retail tariff |
| $55.5/MWh | Reported median all-in cost among surveyed miners | Benchmark whose cost definitions and surveyed population must be checked |
| 52.4% sustainable-energy share | Share reported by surveyed miners, comprising 42.6% renewables and 9.8% nuclear | Description of surveyed firms and the report’s classification, not a claim about every miner |
The Cambridge report covers estimated 2024 conditions and a company survey; it is informative but not a census or a consumer profitability test. Treat its figures as context and replace them with your own contract, machine and jurisdiction data.
Risks that can change a mining result
Network competition
As network hashrate and difficulty change, the same ASIC can earn a different amount of Bitcoin. A favorable estimate at installation can deteriorate without any change to your machine. Model declining, flat and improving production rather than one permanent daily figure.
Energy-price volatility
Cambridge’s surveyed miners listed energy-price volatility among their primary concerns. A variable tariff, demand charge or curtailment requirement can turn a marginal operation negative. Confirm contract duration, renewal terms, minimum payments and who bears price changes.
Hardware obsolescence
Newer equipment can deliver more hashes per joule. Your machine may continue working while becoming uneconomic. Include a shut-down threshold based on total cost, not merely the electricity line, and identify how you would sell, repurpose or dispose of the hardware.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Uptime and physical conditions
Heat, dust, humidity, unstable power, internet interruptions and component failures reduce production. A hosted facility may improve physical management but adds dependence on the operator, its service levels and its financial condition.
Regulation and local operating rules
Cambridge’s surveyed miners also identified regulatory uncertainty as a primary concern. Check local rules governing high-load electrical installations, noise, zoning, taxes, environmental requirements and digital-asset activity. Requirements differ by jurisdiction and can change during the machine’s life.

Bitcoin-price exposure
Mining revenue is often received in Bitcoin, so a price decline reduces the value of output. If you sell coins immediately to pay the power bill, you may reduce price exposure but create execution and tax events. If you hold them, you take the same market risk as a buyer while still paying operating costs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Risks that remain when you buy
- Market drawdown: the asset can fall sharply, including during the period you need the money.
- Custodian failure: an exchange or service may be unavailable, compromised or subject to fraud.
- Key-management error: losing recovery information or authorizing a malicious transaction can make funds inaccessible.
- Execution and liquidity conditions: fees, spreads and withdrawal limits can affect the amount you actually acquire or recover.
- Regulatory and tax changes: treatment varies by jurisdiction and may change over time.
Buying is operationally lighter, not risk-free. The appropriate comparison is total risk and expected outcome for your circumstances, not the number of physical tasks involved.
When each path can fit
Buying may fit when
- You want adjustable exposure without managing an industrial electrical load.
- Your electricity rate is high, uncertain or subject to expensive demand charges.
- You cannot provide safe ventilation, acceptable noise control, reliable internet and maintenance.
- You value liquidity and do not want capital tied to a depreciating machine.
- You can establish a custody process and tolerate Bitcoin’s volatility.
Mining may fit when
- You have a documented, competitive power contract and permission to operate the load.
- You can fund the ASIC, installation and several months of expenses without relying on optimistic coin prices.
- You understand machine efficiency, expected life, warranty, repairs and resale.
- You can monitor uptime, heat, networking, pool accounting and security.
- You are prepared for difficulty changes, regulation and periods when shutting down is rational.
Neither list is a recommendation. It is a screening framework: if a mining requirement is unknown, the uncertainty belongs in the model rather than being treated as zero.
Common calculation mistakes
Using a single break-even number
A break-even price is highly sensitive to the date, difficulty, rewards, electricity, uptime, fees, depreciation and resale assumptions. Presenting one number without those inputs creates false precision. Show a range and identify which assumptions drive it.
Counting only electricity
Electricity-only cost can be useful for a narrow operating measure, but it does not recover the ASIC, installation, repairs, facility, insurance, taxes or downtime. Label the measure precisely and provide a full-cost view.
Borrowing industrial figures for home mining
Large operators can negotiate power, spread maintenance and use specialized facilities. Their filings and survey medians do not establish what a residential miner will pay. Replace them with your tariff, machine and installation quote.

Forgetting the alternative use of capital
The buying comparison should use the same starting cash. Money committed to an ASIC cannot simultaneously be used to buy Bitcoin, remain liquid or fund another investment. Include financing costs and the value of cash tied up in equipment.
Confusing coins produced with profit
Mined Bitcoin is revenue, not profit. Profit requires subtracting every relevant cost and recognizing the value of the equipment consumed to produce it.
Pre-commitment checklist
Before buying an ASIC or acquiring a large Bitcoin position, document:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Your jurisdiction, tax treatment and legal permission to operate.
- Starting capital, reserve cash and maximum tolerable loss.
- Holding period and three Bitcoin-price scenarios.
- For mining: ASIC model data, power draw, efficiency, electrical capacity, cooling, noise, uptime, warranty, repairs, pool terms, hosting, insurance, depreciation and resale.
- For buying: execution fee, spread, custody method, withdrawal process, key recovery and security controls.
- The source date and definition for every network, price, reward and cost input.
- A shutdown or exit rule if electricity rises, difficulty changes, hardware fails or the Bitcoin price falls.
Recalculate when a major input changes. A machine purchase is not a one-time profitability decision; it is an operating commitment whose economics can move every day.
Making the decision
Choose buying when your priority is straightforward, adjustable Bitcoin exposure and you do not have a clear operating advantage in power, equipment or facility management. Choose mining only after a full-cost model shows that your specific tariff, machine and operating plan can withstand adverse price and difficulty cases without relying on guaranteed appreciation.
The defensible conclusion is conditional: buying generally has fewer moving parts, while mining can add potential operating upside only by accepting substantially more capital, execution and business risk. Match the alternatives on capital, time, fees and scenarios, and treat every output as an estimate rather than a promise.
