Bitcoin-Mining Sites Are Moving Into AI—but FTX’s Asset Link Is Unverified

Some Bitcoin miners are redirecting facilities and investment toward AI and high-performance computing (HPC), but the available disclosures do not verify that the mining assets in this story belonged to FTX or identify a buyer using them for AI. Core Scientific has described plans to convert or reallocate facilities and disclosed contracts with CoreWeave. Those facts support a broader shift in the industry—not the specific claim that FTX’s former assets are now part of it.

What happened to FTX’s old Bitcoin-mining assets?

The ownership trail is not established by the available records summarized here. They do not identify which specific mining assets the headline refers to, verify that FTX owned them, document their sale or other disposition, or connect them to a current AI operator. Without an estate filing, court sale record, or buyer or operator disclosure that connects those steps, it would be misleading to say that FTX’s assets are now being used for AI.

That distinction matters: evidence that miners are pursuing AI infrastructure does not establish that any particular former FTX asset changed hands or use. The supported story is an industry trend, with the FTX-specific connection unconfirmed.

Are Bitcoin-mining sites being turned into AI data centers?

Yes, some operators have disclosed plans or activity to adapt mining infrastructure for AI/HPC colocation. The disclosures describe a process—construction, refurbishment, conversion, and reallocation—not an automatic switch from Bitcoin mining to AI computing.

Core Scientific: conversion plans and a named customer

Core Scientific’s 2025 Form 10-K says the company is reallocating infrastructure and capital from Bitcoin mining toward high-density colocation for AI/HPC workloads. It describes facilities being constructed, refurbished, reallocated, or converted, and states an intention to convert its portfolio over three years, subject to circumstances. This is company-reported activity and a plan; it does not mean every facility has already converted.

In June 2024, Core Scientific disclosed HPC contracts with CoreWeave and discussed possible further expansion as well as conversations with other prospective customers. That establishes a named customer relationship at that time. The cited disclosure does not establish the contracts’ present scope or status.

Other miners: evaluation is not a completed conversion

Riot’s 2024 filing said it was evaluating whether to use remaining power capacity at its Corsicana site for AI/HPC development. That is evidence of evaluation, not a report that the capacity had been converted or placed under an AI/HPC contract.

MARA Holdings’ 2024 Form 10-K, filed in 2025, says it acquired two Bitcoin-mining sites in January 2024 with 390 MW of nameplate capacity. That figure describes those acquired sites; it does not show they were FTX assets or that they were being used for AI.

Operator or transaction What the cited disclosure establishes What it does not establish
Core Scientific Its 2025 Form 10-K describes AI/HPC colocation activity and a three-year portfolio-conversion intention, subject to circumstances. That every site is converted, or that the plan has been completed.
Core Scientific and CoreWeave Core Scientific disclosed HPC contracts in June 2024. The contracts’ current scope or status.
Riot Its 2024 filing says it was evaluating remaining Corsicana power capacity for AI/HPC development. A completed conversion or an AI/HPC customer contract for that capacity.
MARA Holdings Its 2024 Form 10-K reports the January 2024 acquisition of two mining sites with 390 MW of nameplate capacity. Any connection to FTX or AI use of those sites.

These disclosures describe different stages—contracted service, a conversion plan, an evaluation, and an acquisition. They are not directly comparable measures of delivered AI capacity or financial returns.

Why are Bitcoin miners pivoting to AI?

Mining operators already manage power-intensive facilities, and demand for electricity, land, and infrastructure has drawn AI firms to consider sites associated with Bitcoin mining. For miners, AI/HPC colocation can offer another potential source of revenue. TIME’s June 2024 reporting captured the competition for sites, quoting Core Scientific CEO Adam Sullivan: “They have started to buy up mining sites for greater prices than what Bitcoin miners are willing to pay.” That is Sullivan’s assessment in a specific 2024 context, not an independently verified market-wide price measure.

Minerpals.com New Avalon Nano 3S Bitcoin Miner Super Home Quiet SHA256 ASIC Miner 140w Heater PSU Include 6TH/s Black Stock
  • Canaan has launched the Avalon Nano 3S ASIC miner designed for residential spaces, featuring the SHA-256 algorithm for direct Bitcoin mining.
  • The Nano 3S boasts an eye-catching design with an information display screen and simple setup, making it suitable for beginners or as a gift.
  • Despite its small size and quiet operation, its hash rate of 6Th/s and power consumption of 140W result in a relatively low energy efficiency.

Access to power and an existing site can be useful starting points, but they do not by themselves make a facility suitable for high-density computing. Core Scientific’s disclosures distinguish capacity serving GPUs from capacity supporting the surrounding systems, and describe conversion and construction work. A Bitcoin-mining ASIC is specialized for mining; it is not an AI GPU. The assets that may carry over are elements of the site and its infrastructure, not the mining machines as AI accelerators.

What should readers look for when assessing an AI conversion claim?

  • Power that can be delivered: A site’s stated or nameplate capacity is not the same as power actually available to an operating customer.
  • Facility readiness: Check what buildings, substations, cooling, and other infrastructure already exist, and what must be built, refurbished, or converted.
  • GPU and support capacity: Distinguish capacity serving GPUs from capacity reserved for the systems that support them.
  • A named customer and contract status: A company discussing prospects or evaluating a site is not the same as a disclosed customer contract; an older contract disclosure does not establish its present status.
  • The stage and date of the claim: Separate operational facts from plans, evaluations, and future targets. For example, Core Scientific’s June 2024 capacity presentation is a historical allocation snapshot, not a statement of current capacity.

The cited company filings and disclosures do not provide a comparable independent return-on-investment figure across operators, so they do not support a general claim about which conversion strategy is most profitable.
