Choose a Bitcoin market order when getting filled now matters more than the exact price; choose a resting limit order when price control and potentially lower maker fees matter more than certainty. A market order consumes available offers or bids immediately and can fill across several order-book levels. A limit order sets the worst price you will accept, but it may fill only partly or not at all. The word “limit” does not guarantee a maker fee: a limit order that matches immediately is a taker order.
What the two Bitcoin order types actually do
Market orders prioritize execution
A market order tells the exchange to buy or sell immediately at the best available prices in the order book. The exchange matches your quantity against resting orders, starting at the best available level and moving through additional levels when the first level does not contain enough BTC.

Kraken’s exchange rules describe a market order as one that “buys or sells immediately at the best available price (market price) on the order book for the reference asset.” The same rules warn that a market order can execute at different price levels because of the order size and existing orders. Consequently, the quote shown before submission is not necessarily the average price for the entire order.

A limit order specifies the price at which you are willing to trade. For a buy, it sets the maximum price; for a sell, it sets the minimum price. Kraken’s rules state that a limit order fills only at its specified price or better.

That protection has a direct trade-off: the market may never reach your price. A limit order can remain open, fill in several pieces, or expire without a fill, depending on the venue’s order controls and market movement. A buy limit above the current market or a sell limit below it can match immediately, however. In that case it behaves as an aggressive order and is generally charged as taker liquidity.
Market versus limit at a glance
| Consideration | Market order | Resting (passive) limit order | Aggressive limit order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary objective | Get filled immediately | Control the worst acceptable price | Set a price cap or floor while seeking an immediate fill |
| Execution speed | Immediate, subject to matching and venue availability | Only when another order reaches your price | Immediate for the crossed portion, if liquidity exists |
| Price protection | No hard price ceiling on a buy or floor on a sell | Buy cannot fill above its limit; sell cannot fill below it | Has a boundary, but crossing the spread may execute at once |
| Fill certainty | Usually high for a small order in a functioning market, but not an absolute guarantee | Uncertain; may be partial or missed | Higher than a passive limit, but available liquidity can still be insufficient |
| Fee classification | Taker because it removes resting liquidity | Maker only while it rests and adds liquidity | Taker for any part that matches immediately; a later resting part can be maker |
| Spread and slippage | Pays the available spread and can walk through multiple levels | Can capture the spread if another trader takes it, but faces waiting and adverse-selection risk | Usually pays some or all of the spread; slippage is bounded by the limit, not eliminated |
| Operational effort | Inspect size, depth, spread and estimated average fill | Choose price, monitor status and decide whether to cancel or amend | Compare the limit’s taker cost with a market order before sending |
How maker and taker fees are assigned
Liquidity, not the word “limit,” determines the category
A maker order rests on the book and adds liquidity. A taker order matches an existing order immediately and removes liquidity. Market orders are taker orders because immediate execution consumes resting bids or asks.
Kraken’s maker-and-taker explanation specifically warns that a limit order can still be taker if its price is placed on the wrong side of the book. For example, a buy limit at or above the best ask can match immediately; a sell limit at or below the best bid can do the same. A buy limit below the best ask or a sell limit above the best bid normally rests, assuming no intervening order changes the book before acceptance.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
One order can receive both treatments
If only part of a limit order matches immediately, that immediate portion is taker. Any remaining quantity that rests on the book is maker when it later fills. Coinbase Advanced documents this split explicitly: immediately filled market and limit orders pay the taker fee, while a buy limit below market that rests pays the maker fee when matched.
Rates vary by venue, product and account
There is no universal Bitcoin maker or taker rate. The applicable percentage can depend on the exchange, BTC pair, spot or other product, 30-day volume, account tier, balance criteria and geography.

As a dated, venue-specific example, Kraken’s fee explanation published September 5, 2026 reports a range from -0.02% maker to 0.80% taker, subject to account, pair, volume and maker/taker conditions. A negative maker figure means a qualifying account may receive a rebate under that schedule; it is not a market-wide rule.
Coinbase says its Advanced Trade tiers use applicable 30-day volume or balance criteria and that the current rates appear in the Advanced Trade interface. A separate Coinbase consumer pricing disclosure says certain simple crypto limit orders can carry a 1% limit-order execution fee, with spread and fees shown in the order preview. That disclosure is product- and jurisdiction-specific and must not be applied to every Coinbase product or every exchange.
Slippage, spread and why the displayed quote changes
Slippage is an execution result, not a fixed percentage
Slippage is the difference between the expected or displayed price and the price actually achieved. For a market order, it is driven mainly by order size relative to available depth, a thin order book and price movement while the order is being matched. Kraken explicitly documents that market orders can execute at multiple levels and that slippage depends on market conditions.
No authoritative market-wide figure establishes a “typical” Bitcoin slippage percentage. It changes with the pair, order size, venue, volatility and the depth available at the moment you submit. Treat any fixed percentage quoted without those conditions as an unreliable shortcut.
The spread is a cost even when the fee is low
The spread is the gap between the best bid and best ask. For a buy, compare the best ask with the midpoint or another reference price; for a sell, compare the best bid. A market buy pays the available ask and may climb to higher asks. A market sell hits the bid and may descend to lower bids.

A passive limit order can avoid paying the spread, and may capture it when another trader takes your quote. That benefit is compensation for waiting risk: the market can move away, or it can move through your price only after the remaining liquidity has disappeared. A low explicit fee therefore does not prove that a passive order was cheaper overall.
The all-in cost you should compare
Evaluate an order using:
- Trading fee: the maker or taker percentage, rebate or product-specific charge shown for your account.
- Spread: the distance between the reference price and the bid or ask you actually trade against.
- Slippage: any additional movement caused by walking the book or by price changes during matching.
- Venue-specific surcharge: a separate execution or service charge that may apply to a particular product or region.
- Opportunity cost: for a limit order, the price movement or missed exposure that occurs while waiting for a fill.
The cheapest maker percentage can lose to a market order if the market rises before your buy limit fills, or falls before your sell limit fills. Conversely, a market order’s speed can be expensive when the book is thin or the quantity is large.
Worked example: why average fill and total cost differ
The following is an illustration, not a quote from any exchange. Assumptions are a BTC/USD spot pair, a 0.80 BTC buy, a displayed best ask of $60,000, a best bid of $59,990, and the following ask depth at the instant of submission:
| Ask level | Available BTC | Price | Notional consumed |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0.25 BTC | $60,000 | $15,000 |
| 2 | 0.30 BTC | $60,020 | $18,006 |
| 3 | 0.25 BTC | $60,080 | $15,020 |
| Total | 0.80 BTC | Average $60,032.50 | $48,026 |
The top ask was $60,000, but the market order’s volume-weighted average was $60,032.50 because it consumed three levels. Relative to the top ask, the price difference is $32.50 per BTC, or about 0.054% under these assumptions, before fees. A hypothetical 0.40% taker fee would add about $192.10, producing an illustrative total of roughly $48,218.10. The 0.40% rate is deliberately hypothetical; your venue and tier may be different.
Now consider a 0.80 BTC buy limit at $60,000. If only the 0.25 BTC at that price is available and the market moves higher, you receive 0.25 BTC and leave 0.55 BTC unfilled. If the full order eventually fills at $60,000 and a hypothetical maker fee is 0.10%, the trading cost would be $48,048 before any other charge. That apparent saving exists only if the price remains available and the entire order fills. If BTC rises while you wait, buying later can cost more than the saved fee; if it falls, the resting order may have been unnecessary or may fill under worse market context. The example shows why fill probability belongs in the cost calculation.

How to choose the order type
Use a market order when certainty is worth more than precision
- You must enter or exit immediately, such as closing urgent risk.
- The order is small relative to visible depth in a liquid pair.
- You have reviewed the estimated average fill, spread and slippage controls.
- A missed fill would be more costly than a variable execution price.
Even then, check the quantity against the order book. “Immediate” does not mean “one price,” and a market order cannot guarantee a maximum buy price or minimum sell price.
Use a passive limit order when price control is the priority
- You can wait and would rather miss the trade than cross a stated price.
- You want the possibility of maker treatment and the venue’s lower maker rate applies to your account.
- You place a buy below the best ask or a sell above the best bid so the order can rest.
- You are prepared to monitor partial fills and cancel or replace the order as conditions change.
If the venue offers a post-only instruction, use it when preserving maker intent matters. Post-only cancels an order that would execute immediately instead of allowing it to become taker.
Use an aggressive limit when a cap or floor is essential
An aggressive limit crosses the spread to seek an immediate fill but stops at your maximum buy price or minimum sell price. It can be useful when you need speed but refuse to accept a price beyond a defined boundary. Because the crossed portion removes liquidity, compare its taker fee and likely fill with a market order. If available liquidity ends before your limit, the remaining amount can stay unfilled or rest, depending on the venue’s behavior.

- Confirm the instrument. Select the intended BTC pair and product. Fee schedules and execution rules can differ between spot, margin, derivatives and simple-buy interfaces.
- Read the live book. Note the best bid, best ask, spread and quantity available at successive levels. Do not use a last-trade price as a promise of what your order will receive.
- Estimate the quantity’s impact. For a market order, add the notional at each level needed to complete the quantity and calculate an expected average. For a limit order, identify how much is already available at your price and how much would need new liquidity.
- Check the fee preview. Verify the maker or taker rate, any separate execution charge and the estimated total. Coinbase says current Advanced Trade rates and order-preview charges are displayed in its interface; other venues expose equivalent information under their own labels.
- Select the execution priority. Choose market for speed, a resting limit for price control, or an aggressive limit for a price boundary with a chance of immediate execution.
- Set and verify the price. For a passive buy, stay below the best ask; for a passive sell, stay above the best bid. Recheck the book immediately before submission because another order can change the classification.
- Submit and inspect fills. Confirm filled quantity, average price, fee, and any remaining open quantity. A limit order is not complete merely because it was accepted.
- Manage the remainder. Decide in advance whether an unfilled order should remain, be canceled, be replaced at a new price, or be completed with a separate order. Avoid repeatedly crossing the spread without recalculating the total cost.
Reducing slippage on larger Bitcoin orders
Reduce the quantity hitting any one level
Splitting a large order into smaller pieces can keep each execution closer to the top of book, but it adds timing risk and more decisions. The market can move between pieces, so splitting does not guarantee a better result.
Recommended Free Tools
Use a limit ladder
A ladder places portions at several acceptable prices. It can improve price control and increase the chance of partial execution, but it may leave the full position incomplete. Set the outer prices according to the maximum loss of control you are willing to accept.
Best Value
Consider documented advanced execution tools
If your venue provides an advanced execution method, read its documented behavior, fee treatment and cancellation rules before using it. Do not assume that a tool designed to reduce market impact guarantees a particular average price or slippage percentage.
Trade when the book can support your size
Depth and volatility change continuously. A pair that appears deep for a small order can be thin for a large one, and a sudden move can remove displayed liquidity. Compare the quantity you need with the visible levels at the moment of submission rather than relying on a historical average.
Why a Bitcoin limit order may not fill
Your price was never reached
A buy limit below the market requires sellers to trade down to your price; a sell limit above the market requires buyers to trade up. If that never happens, no execution occurs.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There was a queue ahead of you
Other orders can already be resting at the same price. The market may touch your price without providing enough volume to reach your position in the queue, leaving the order partially filled or untouched.
The market moved through too quickly
A fast move can skip displayed levels, cancel available liquidity or reverse before your order matches. A price that appears to have traded at your limit is not proof that your entire quantity could fill there.
The order was canceled or expired
Some venues apply an expiration or cancellation instruction. Check the order status and the venue’s rules instead of assuming an accepted order remains open indefinitely.
Why a limit order paid a taker fee
- It crossed the spread. A buy at or above the best ask, or a sell at or below the best bid, can match immediately.
- The book changed before acceptance. A price that looked passive while you prepared the order may have become marketable by the time it reached the matching engine.
- Only part rested. The immediately matched quantity was taker; the remainder may later receive maker treatment.
- The product has a separate charge. A simple-buy interface may use a different pricing schedule from an advanced order book. Coinbase’s disclosed 1% simple limit-order execution fee is an example of a product-specific rule, not evidence that every limit order everywhere costs 1%.
To diagnose the charge, compare the order’s executed price with the bid and ask at submission, then inspect the execution report for each fill rather than relying on the order type shown in the ticket.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPractical checklist before submitting BTC
- Have you confirmed the exact BTC pair, product and settlement currency?
- What are the current best bid, best ask and spread?
- For a market order, how many book levels does your quantity consume?
- For a limit order, is your price genuinely resting or does it cross the spread?
- What maker, taker or separate execution fee applies to this account and product?
- How much of the order can remain unfilled without creating a problem?
- What is your action if only part fills or the market moves away?
- Does the live preview show an estimated average, total fee and final amount?
Bottom line
Market orders buy execution certainty with an uncertain average price: they take liquidity, pay the spread and can incur slippage across several levels. Limit orders buy price protection with uncertain execution: they may rest and earn maker treatment, but they can be partial, delayed or missed. A limit that executes immediately is generally taker, so compare the complete cost—fee, spread, slippage, venue surcharge and waiting risk—using the live order preview and the current fee schedule for your account.
