Bitcoin Liquidation Price Explained: Calculate Your Risk Before Using Leverage

Your Bitcoin liquidation price is the exchange’s calculated mark price at which your leveraged position no longer meets its maintenance-margin requirement and is force-closed. It is not a universal percentage below your entry price, and there is no single formula that works for every exchange or contract. The exact result depends on the venue, contract type, position direction and size, leverage, margin mode, maintenance-margin tier, fees, deductions, added margin and the rest of your account.

Use the exchange’s current liquidation calculator and contract rules as the final authority. Manual calculations are useful for understanding risk and checking an input, but a third-party estimate can be wrong when it uses a different mark-price method, maintenance tier or fee assumption.

What a Bitcoin liquidation price means

When you open a leveraged Bitcoin position, you post collateral rather than paying the full notional value. The exchange tracks that collateral against a maintenance-margin requirement. Your position’s unrealized profit or loss changes the equity supporting it. If the applicable equity falls below the required maintenance margin, the exchange begins its liquidation process.

The trigger is normally the exchange’s mark price reaching the calculated liquidation price, not simply the last traded price on the order book. Binance describes liquidation as occurring when collateral is less than maintenance margin and the mark price reaches the liquidation price. Bybit uses the same basic relationship: liquidation occurs when the mark price reaches the liquidation price and position margin falls below required maintenance margin.

That distinction matters during a fast move. The last trade on an exchange can differ from the mark price used for risk controls, and a brief trade at a different venue does not necessarily trigger your position. Conversely, a mark-price move can trigger liquidation even when the most recently displayed trade appears to be above your estimate.

Liquidation is also different from a stop-loss. A stop order is a risk-management instruction that you choose and that may execute before liquidation. Liquidation is an exchange protection process that takes control after margin requirements are no longer met. Waiting for liquidation usually gives you less control over execution, fees and the remaining collateral.

Why there is no universal BTC liquidation formula

“Bitcoin liquidation price” sounds like one number that can be calculated from entry price and leverage. In practice, the number belongs to a specific account, venue and contract. A USDT-margined perpetual, an inverse perpetual, a dated futures contract and a spot-margin loan can all use different accounting conventions.

For example, Binance’s USDⓈ-M calculation incorporates wallet balance, maintenance margin and unrealized profit or loss from other contracts, along with position size, entry price, the maintenance-margin rate and tier-specific maintenance amounts. Bybit’s inverse-contract calculation uses position value, initial margin, maintenance margin and the risk-limit maintenance-margin rate. Its cross-margin calculation also considers available balance. Bybit’s USDT-margined calculation uses entry price, position size, leverage, extra margin, maintenance-margin rate and a deduction; closing-fee treatment can affect the result.

These are not interchangeable formulas. A result copied from a calculator for one contract can be materially wrong for another, even when the entry price, leverage and quantity look identical.

The inputs that determine your liquidation price

Collect the following information before calculating. Each item can move the result or change which formula applies.

  • Venue and contract: identify the exchange and whether the position is spot margin, an inverse perpetual, a USDT-margined perpetual or a dated futures contract.
  • Direction: a long is threatened by a falling mark price; a short is threatened by a rising mark price.
  • Entry price: use the position’s actual average entry price, not an intended order price.
  • Position size or notional: record the quantity in the contract’s units and its notional value where the venue displays both.
  • Leverage and initial margin: leverage changes how much collateral supports the same exposure, while some venues recalculate effective leverage after you add or remove margin.
  • Margin mode: isolated and cross margin use different collateral pools and account variables.
  • Added or extra margin: additional collateral can move liquidation farther away, subject to the venue’s rules.
  • Maintenance-margin tier: larger positions can enter a higher risk-limit tier with a different maintenance rate or deduction.
  • Fees and deductions: some calculations reserve an estimated closing fee or apply a tier-specific deduction.
  • Other positions and account equity: cross margin can be affected by available balance, unrealized PnL and positions in other pairs.

How to calculate it safely

  1. Open the contract specification. In the exchange’s futures or margin interface, confirm the exact contract, settlement asset, mark-price source, risk limits, maintenance-margin schedule and liquidation rules.
  2. Write down the live position state. Record direction, average entry price, quantity, notional, leverage, margin mode and any manually added margin. Use the position panel rather than a rounded chart value.
  3. Find the current maintenance tier. Look up the risk-limit bracket for your position size. Record the maintenance-margin rate and any fixed deduction or tier amount. If increasing size could move you into another bracket, calculate the new tier as well.
  4. Account for collateral available to the position. For isolated margin, this is generally the margin allocated to that position under the venue’s documented rules. For cross margin, include the available balance and the account-level unrealized PnL variables the venue specifies.
  5. Apply the venue’s fee treatment. Check whether the calculator reserves a closing fee, uses a different fee for the liquidation transaction or treats funding separately. Do not substitute your trading fee rate unless the documentation says that is the correct input.
  6. Run the exchange calculator. Enter the values into the built-in liquidation or risk calculator and save the resulting price, tier and assumptions. A calculator result without its contract and margin settings is not a portable answer.
  7. Compare with the live mark price. The distance between the mark price and liquidation estimate is your immediate price buffer. Consider the buffer in dollars and as a percentage, while remembering that the estimate can move as account conditions change.
  8. Recalculate after every material change. Recheck after resizing, changing leverage, adding or removing margin, crossing a risk tier, opening another position, receiving a funding payment or experiencing a significant unrealized PnL change.

Isolated margin versus cross margin

Isolated margin

Isolated margin assigns a defined collateral amount to one position. Under the exchange’s documented rules, the margin exposed to that position’s liquidation is limited to the position’s allocated margin rather than the entire derivatives wallet. This makes the maximum collateral at risk easier to bound and makes a position-level liquidation estimate easier to interpret.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Isolation does not make a trade safe. A highly leveraged position can still be liquidated after a relatively small adverse move, and fees, maintenance tiers and mark-price behavior still apply. Adding margin to an isolated position can change its liquidation price, but it also increases the amount of collateral exposed to that position.

Cross margin

Cross margin allows the position to draw on eligible available account balance under the venue’s rules. This can provide more room before liquidation than assigning the same amount of collateral in isolation. The trade-off is broader exposure: funds that support one position may be consumed when that position loses money.

Cross-margin liquidation is account-dependent. Available balance, unrealized PnL and other open pairs can move the liquidation price even when the Bitcoin position itself has not changed. A profitable position elsewhere may increase available equity; a losing position or a new trade may reduce it. Because the account state changes continuously, a cross-margin liquidation price is a moving estimate rather than a fixed line.

How leverage changes the distance to liquidation

Leverage does not set a universal liquidation percentage. It changes the relationship between your position’s notional value and the collateral supporting it. With a larger position and the same margin, a smaller adverse price move consumes the available equity. Maintenance margin then determines when the remaining equity is insufficient.

Two positions can use the same leverage setting and still have different liquidation prices because their maintenance tiers, contract types, fees, entry prices or account balances differ. Conversely, changing the leverage slider may not behave like a simple linear adjustment if the venue recalculates initial margin, moves the position into another tier or applies an added-margin rule.

For a long, a lower mark price generally reduces unrealized PnL and moves the account toward maintenance-margin failure. For a short, a higher mark price has that effect. The direction is intuitive; the exact trigger is not, because the exchange’s maintenance schedule and collateral accounting determine the final number.

Mark price, liquidation price and execution risk

The mark price is a risk-control price calculated under the venue’s methodology. It may use an index or reference price and a funding-related component rather than simply the latest transaction. Read the contract specification to see how the venue defines it and which data sources it uses.

Liquidation is not guaranteed to occur at the displayed estimate as a clean, voluntary fill. When the trigger is reached, the exchange may cancel orders, partially or fully close the position, charge liquidation-related fees or transfer the position through an insurance or risk-management process. The exact procedure is venue-specific. Your calculator is therefore a margin-warning tool, not a promise of the price at which every unit will be executed.

Common calculation mistakes and fixes

Using a generic online formula

Problem: The formula assumes a maintenance rate, fee or contract convention that does not match your venue.

Fix: Start with the exchange’s calculator and contract documentation. Use manual arithmetic only to validate the inputs and direction of the result.

Using last price instead of mark price

Problem: You compare the liquidation estimate with the wrong market price.

Fix: Monitor the mark-price field shown in the position or risk panel and understand the venue’s mark-price methodology.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring maintenance tiers

Problem: Increasing position size silently changes the maintenance rate or fixed deduction.

Fix: Check the risk-limit schedule before and after resizing. Recalculate whenever the position crosses a bracket.

Treating cross margin like isolated margin

Problem: You assume the liquidation price depends only on the Bitcoin position.

Fix: Include available balance, other positions and account unrealized PnL when the venue’s cross-margin formula requires them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving out extra margin or fees

Problem: The estimate is farther from or closer to the mark price than the exchange’s result.

Fix: Enter added margin and the documented closing-fee or deduction treatment exactly as specified.

Assuming the estimate stays fixed

Problem: You continue using yesterday’s number after changing the account.

Fix: Recalculate after every position, leverage, margin, tier, fee, funding or cross-account change.

Practical ways to reduce liquidation risk

  • Use modest leverage. Lower leverage generally leaves a larger equity buffer for the same directional exposure, although it does not eliminate loss risk.
  • Keep a deliberate mark-price buffer. Do not treat the liquidation estimate as an acceptable stop level. Decide in advance where you would reduce or close the position.
  • Size positions around a tolerable loss. Position size, not just the leverage setting, determines how quickly an adverse move consumes collateral.
  • Prefer isolated margin when you need a hard collateral boundary. Confirm how the venue handles added margin and liquidation fees before relying on that boundary.
  • Monitor risk tiers. A larger position can receive less favorable maintenance terms, so resizing can reduce safety even when the displayed leverage appears unchanged.
  • Keep cross-margin exposure intentional. Understand which balances and positions can support or drain the Bitcoin trade.
  • Leave room for volatility and fees. A narrow gap between mark price and liquidation leaves little time to act during a fast market move.
  • Check the calculator at the moment you trade. Contract rules, tiers and account values are the inputs that control the practical result.

A repeatable pre-trade checklist

  1. Confirm the venue, contract type and settlement asset.
  2. Confirm whether the trade is long or short and verify the average entry price.
  3. Record quantity, notional, leverage and margin mode.
  4. Check the maintenance-margin rate, deduction and risk-limit tier.
  5. Enter extra margin, available balance and other-position effects where required.
  6. Verify fee and funding treatment in the contract rules.
  7. Run the venue calculator and compare the result with the live mark price.
  8. Set a separate exit plan before the liquidation threshold.
  9. Recalculate whenever the account or position changes.

What to remember

A Bitcoin liquidation price is an exchange-specific maintenance-margin threshold tied to the mark price. Entry price, direction, size, leverage, contract design, maintenance tier, deductions, fees and margin mode all matter. Isolated margin makes allocated collateral easier to bound; cross margin can provide more room while exposing wider account funds and allowing other positions to move the estimate. The exchange’s current calculator and rules—not a universal percentage or a generic formula—control the number that matters for your position.
