Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBitcoin appears in academic research both as a subject of study and as part of a wider inquiry into digital currencies. Universities and public programs fund some work on blockchain, cryptocurrency, and digital payments, but the available examples do not establish a dedicated, broadly available Bitcoin grant. A separate idea—using cryptocurrency investments to support research—has been proposed in academic literature, not demonstrated as a replacement for conventional funding.
How is Bitcoin used in academic research?
Researchers study Bitcoin’s technical systems, markets, and social implications. Its relevance crosses disciplinary boundaries: a 2019 bibliometric study identifies economics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science among the fields involved.

That study counted 1,162 papers in the Web of Science Core Collection using the topic query “bitcoin” and reported that its earliest identified publications dated to 2012. This is a count produced by that database and query at the time of the study—not a current or exhaustive census of Bitcoin scholarship. Read the bibliometric study.

Texas McCombs lists work on Bitcoin’s relationship to stablecoin markets, cryptocurrency transaction graphs and price movement, and drivers of cryptocurrency returns. Its other examples include consensus, permissioned blockchains, and blockchain-based health identity; those topics demonstrate the breadth of the initiative, but are not necessarily Bitcoin-specific. Can you get funding for Bitcoin research?
Potential support comes through university initiatives, fellowships, scholarships, and public grant programs. The examples below fund broader categories such as blockchain, digital payments, or cryptocurrency, so applicants should check whether a particular Bitcoin project fits the program’s scope and eligibility rules.
| Route | Who or what it supports | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Berkeley Haas university grants | Faculty and student proposals in blockchain, distributed systems, cryptocurrency, digital payments, and related areas. | The proposal page lists 2023 award windows and deadlines; those are historical, not current opportunities. Program overview and proposal details. |
| Texas McCombs initiative | UT Austin faculty and graduate student proposals in blockchain, distributed systems, cryptocurrency, digital payments, and related cryptography; the initiative also describes limited graduate fellowships. | The page does not establish a current open-call deadline. Program information. |
| European Commission grants | Blockchain projects, primarily through Horizon programmes. | The Commission reported approximately €180 million in prizes and grants through Horizon 2020 from 2016 to 2019. This is historical programme context, not funding currently available to Bitcoin researchers. European Commission funding overview. |
| University of Nicosia partnership | UBRI-supported postdoctoral fellowships, master’s scholarships, research activities, validator infrastructure, and curriculum work. | The overview does not establish current application windows or universal eligibility. What to check before applying
- Eligibility: Verify whether the call accepts faculty, graduate students, individual researchers, or institutional teams.
- Scope: Confirm that Bitcoin-specific work qualifies under broader blockchain, cryptocurrency, or digital-payments language.
- Type of support: Distinguish research grants from fellowships, scholarships, and support for teaching, events, curriculum, or infrastructure.
- Status and obligations: Confirm the current application window, award terms, and any reporting requirements directly with the institution or funder. Historical pages do not establish that a call remains open.
Does Bitcoin itself fund science?
A 2017 article in Ledger proposed a cryptocurrency-funded research fund, discussing mechanisms involving staking coins and masternodes. The proposal considers cryptocurrency broadly; it is not evidence of an established Bitcoin grant program. Its authors frame this approach as a possible supplementary funding stream, not a complete solution. Read the article in Ledger.

This distinction matters: institutional programs described above provide support for research or related academic activity, while the Ledger article proposes using cryptocurrency investment returns as a funding mechanism. The cited examples do not show that such a mechanism is proven, widely adopted, or a substitute for grants.
What the examples do—and do not—show
Together, these cases show that Bitcoin is a subject within interdisciplinary scholarship and that researchers may find support through programs covering a wider digital-asset field. They do not establish one central funding route, a complete list of current opportunities, or a standard grant specifically for Bitcoin research. Funding terms and availability depend on the individual program and should be checked with its administrator.
