Bitcoin Falls 1.5% After Hot U.S. Inflation Report Revives Fed Hike Bets

Bitcoin fell about 1.5% to approximately $82,142 on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, after a hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation report pushed traders to reconsider whether the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates again this month. The move spread across digital assets: Ethereum dropped 2.8%, Solana 1.9% and XRP 1.3%, while total cryptocurrency market capitalization slipped 0.7% to about $2.8 trillion.

What happened to Bitcoin and crypto prices

The sell-off followed the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics release of September Consumer Price Index data. Bitcoin’s decline was relatively modest in percentage terms, but derivatives positioning magnified the move: about $281 million in crypto positions were liquidated during the preceding 24 hours, with most liquidations occurring in the final four hours and concentrated in Bitcoin long positions, according to Decrypt.

Long liquidations can accelerate a spot-market decline because leveraged traders are forced to close positions as prices fall. That does not establish that Bitcoin’s longer-term trend has changed; it describes the immediate reaction to a major macroeconomic surprise.

Why the September CPI report changed the Fed narrative

The BLS said the CPI for All Urban Consumers rose 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted basis in September, following a 0.4% increase in August. Over the 12 months ending in September, the all-items index increased 3.7% before seasonal adjustment.

September CPI measure Reported change What it indicates
Monthly CPI, seasonally adjusted 0.6% Faster price growth than August’s 0.4%
12-month all-items CPI 3.7% Headline inflation remained well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% objective
Gasoline, 12-month change 9.1% BLS said gasoline supplied more than half of September’s monthly all-items increase
CPI excluding food and energy, 12-month change 2.6% Underlying inflation was still above 2%

The report matters for interest-rate markets because it suggests that inflation is not cooling smoothly. The 9.1% year-over-year gasoline increase was a major contributor, but the 2.6% rise excluding food and energy also kept attention on broader price pressure. A single CPI release does not determine policy, yet it can materially change the odds priced into futures markets.

How high are Fed hike odds now?

Market-implied odds of another rate increase at the Federal Reserve’s October 27–28, 2026 meeting rose to roughly 44%–49% after the CPI release, from about 22% beforehand. Those are probabilities inferred from trading prices, not a Federal Reserve commitment and not a guarantee that rates will rise.

The September policy-rate range was reported at 3.75%–4.00%. The immediate repricing also lifted Treasury yields: the two-year yield rose about 10 basis points to roughly 4.9%, and the 10-year yield climbed to about 5.3%.

Why higher yields pressure Bitcoin

Bitcoin does not pay a coupon or dividend. When short- and long-term government yields rise, investors can earn more from relatively low-risk interest-bearing assets, increasing the opportunity cost of holding Bitcoin. Higher yields can also raise borrowing costs, reduce the amount of leverage available to traders and support the U.S. dollar, which can weigh on assets priced in dollars.

Those same rate expectations helped explain declines in traditional risk assets on October 14: the S&P 500 fell 0.6% and the Nasdaq fell 0.8%, according to Decrypt. Bitcoin therefore reacted through several connected channels rather than through inflation alone: real and nominal yields, the dollar, leverage and cross-market risk appetite.

Bitcoin support and resistance levels after the CPI move

The chart setup cited by Decrypt identifies the following levels. They are areas traders may monitor, not guaranteed targets or predictions.

Direction Level How it is being used
Downside $81,603 Important near-term support; a close below it would weaken the cited setup
Downside $80,365 Next level in view after a break below $81,603
Downside $80,284 Additional nearby support area
Downside $78,003 Lower level identified if selling continues
Upside $84,245 First recovery level listed
Upside $85,301 Next resistance area
Upside $86,644 Higher resistance area
Upside $87,422 Approximate October high

A close below support would show that sellers retained control in the cited timeframe, while reclaiming the upside levels would indicate that the initial CPI shock was being absorbed. Neither outcome establishes a longer-term forecast by itself.

Bitcoin versus other risk assets in this event

The October 14 reaction can be compared across four practical dimensions:

Risk dimension Bitcoin Equities and bonds
Yield sensitivity Higher yields increase the opportunity cost of a non-yielding asset. Higher discount rates can pressure equity valuations while directly raising bond yields.
Leverage and forced selling Derivatives leverage can trigger rapid liquidations, as seen in the $281 million reported total. Leverage exists, but the cited crypto move was specifically amplified by Bitcoin long liquidations.
Dollar and liquidity A stronger dollar and tighter financial conditions can reduce demand for dollar-priced crypto. Equities also respond to the dollar and liquidity; Treasury yields are themselves the direct repricing channel.
Scheduled-event exposure Prices can move sharply around CPI, PPI and Federal Reserve announcements. Stocks and bonds reprice around the same releases, with bond yields often moving first.

What comes next for markets

The next event named in the report is the Producer Price Index on Thursday, October 15, followed by the Federal Reserve’s rate decision on October 28, 2026. PPI data could either reinforce the CPI-driven inflation concern or reduce it, depending on the result. Before the meeting, the 44%–49% hike probability can change minute by minute as new data, speeches and market prices arrive.

For Bitcoin holders and traders, the useful distinction is between an event-driven move and confirmation of a trend. Watch whether yields continue higher, whether the dollar strengthens, whether leveraged positions keep unwinding and whether Bitcoin holds the $81,603 area. These observations describe risk conditions; they are not a promise of where the price will trade.
