Use an exchange when account-based access and frequent trading matter more than direct key control. Use a self-custody wallet when you want to control the keys and can maintain secure devices, recovery information, and backups. Neither choice is automatically safer. Exchange custody moves critical responsibilities to a provider; self-custody removes that dependence but makes you responsible for preventing theft, mistakes, and permanent loss.
The practical decision is whether you can accept a provider controlling or safeguarding the keys, or whether you can reliably protect the keys yourself for as long as you hold Bitcoin.

What the custody difference actually means
Bitcoin ownership is controlled by private keys. The party that controls those keys controls the ability to authorize transactions. In an exchange account, the service controls or safeguards the keys and records your balance in its account system. You can request withdrawals, but access depends on that provider’s security, solvency, operating rules, and withdrawal process. Bitcoin.org explains the counterparty risk of letting a third party control your keys.
Recommended Free Tools
With self-custody, your wallet software or signing device helps you control the private keys directly. The exchange is no longer the gatekeeper for spending, but you become responsible for securing the device, protecting the recovery phrase or other backup, keeping wallet software current, and avoiding mistakes. A lost or exposed recovery credential can result in theft or irreversible loss.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Bitcoin.org summarizes the tradeoff this way: “When a third party controls your keys, you rely entirely on their security and honesty, and history has shown that exchanges and online wallets can be hacked, fail, or freeze access to funds.” The same guidance also warns that no developer, miner, wallet provider, or exchange can recover funds permanently lost from a self-custodied wallet. Read the full explanations in Securing your wallet and Some things you need to know.
Exchange custody: how it works and who it suits
The operating model
You create an account, deposit or buy Bitcoin through the service, and see the balance in an online dashboard or app. The provider handles the underlying key management. To move Bitcoin elsewhere, you use the service’s withdrawal function and comply with whatever authentication, review, limits, or temporary restrictions apply. Those procedures differ by provider and jurisdiction; no single exchange’s terms or legal protections establish a universal rule.
Why people choose it
- Convenient account access: You can manage holdings through familiar account credentials rather than maintaining a signing device and seed backup.
- Trading workflow: Frequent buyers and sellers can keep funds where orders and withdrawals are available, instead of moving Bitcoin between a trading account and a separate wallet for every transaction.
- Provider-managed recovery: If you lose a password or device, the service may offer an account-recovery process. Its exact safeguards and conditions must be checked in that provider’s terms.
The risks you accept
Online custodians are attractive targets and can suffer a breach, operational failure, insolvency, or a decision to restrict withdrawals. Bitcoin.org advises treating services designed to hold money online cautiously because you are relying on the service’s security and honesty. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s customer advisory also describes virtual-currency trading as carrying significant general risks; it is not a study comparing exchange custody with self-custody.
Strong multifactor authentication (MFA) is an important baseline when a provider offers it. Prefer an authenticator application or hardware security key over relying only on a password or text message when the service supports stronger options. Use a unique password, secure the email account connected to the exchange, and review withdrawal and notification settings. These steps reduce account-takeover risk but do not remove provider, solvency, or withdrawal-policy risk.
Self-custody: how it works and who it suits
The operating model
A self-custody wallet generates and stores your private keys. Wallet software creates transactions, and a phone, computer, or dedicated hardware device signs them. An internet-connected device can then broadcast the signed transaction. In a cold-wallet arrangement, the private keys remain offline; a hardware wallet is a common implementation. Bitcoin.org’s FAQ describes cold wallets and self-custody.
Modern deterministic wallets can often be restored from one recovery phrase, while some older or different wallet designs require regular backup files. You must follow the backup method documented by the wallet you actually use rather than assuming every wallet behaves the same way.

Why people choose it
- Direct control: You authorize transactions without asking a custodian to release funds.
- Reduced provider dependence: A service outage, account freeze, or change in withdrawal policy does not by itself control your wallet’s keys.
- Offline storage options: Hardware and other cold-wallet approaches can keep signing keys away from an internet-connected computer during normal storage.
The responsibilities you accept
You are now the recovery department, security team, and transaction approver. Anyone who obtains the recovery phrase may be able to spend the Bitcoin. If the phrase is destroyed, forgotten, or recorded incorrectly and no valid backup exists, the funds may be unrecoverable. Bitcoin.org states that “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.”
Self-custody therefore is not simply downloading an app. It is a continuing process of protecting the wallet, checking transaction details before signing, maintaining backups, and planning what happens if you lose a device or become unavailable.

Choose by your holding pattern and capabilities
If you trade often
An exchange account keeps the balance in the same account used for buying and selling, which avoids repeated transfers. Keep only the amount you are prepared to expose to the provider’s operational and custody risks, and decide in advance how you will react if withdrawals are delayed or unavailable. The convenience is an account feature, not a guarantee that funds will always be accessible.
If you hold for a long period
Self-custody can remove dependence on an exchange for day-to-day access, particularly when a hardware wallet keeps private keys offline. The benefit exists only if you can preserve the recovery phrase, maintain more than one secure backup, and follow the wallet’s backup instructions. A long holding period increases the number of years over which poor records, lost devices, or forgotten procedures can cause trouble.

If you cannot maintain secure backups
Self-custody is a poor fit until you can create and periodically verify a backup plan. A hardware device cannot compensate for a missing or exposed recovery phrase. An exchange may feel easier, but you must then evaluate whether you trust that provider and its account-recovery and withdrawal policies.
If more than one person must approve spending
Consider multisignature only if you understand the additional setup and recovery complexity. Bitcoin.org describes a 3-of-5 arrangement in which any three of five independent approvals are required to spend. This can reduce dependence on one device or location, but every key, backup, and recovery instruction must be tracked accurately. It is an advanced option, not a prerequisite for ordinary self-custody.
How to use an exchange more safely
- Investigate the provider before depositing. Read its custody, withdrawal, account-recovery, outage, and identity-verification terms for your jurisdiction. Do not assume that another service’s rules apply.
- Protect the account perimeter. Use a unique long password, secure the email account used for login, and enable the strongest available MFA. Save recovery codes in a protected place that is separate from your everyday phone.
- Set withdrawal controls. Turn on address whitelists, confirmation delays, login alerts, and withdrawal notifications when available. Treat unexpected messages as possible phishing and navigate to the service through a known bookmark or manually entered address.
- Test a small withdrawal. Copy the destination address carefully, verify it on the device you will use to receive the funds, and wait for the transaction to confirm before moving a larger amount. A test demonstrates that your account, destination wallet, and procedure work; it does not test the provider’s ability to operate indefinitely.
- Review the balance and access plan. Keep records of the provider, account-recovery method, and what a trusted person would need to know if you were unavailable, without exposing passwords or MFA secrets.
These controls cannot prevent a provider from freezing an account, failing, or changing its policies. They address account compromise, not counterparty risk.

1. Select the wallet category
Choose software or hardware that clearly documents key generation, restoration, updates, and backup requirements. A hardware wallet can keep keys offline and may allow an online computer or phone to prepare and broadcast a transaction while the offline device signs it. Bitcoin.org characterizes hardware wallets as a balance between very high security and ease of use, but no particular model is evaluated here.
2. Create the wallet privately
Initialize it in a private space, verify that the wallet generates the recovery information on the device or software you intended to use, and never type the phrase into a website, email, chat, or untrusted application. Do not photograph or store an unencrypted digital copy in cloud storage. Anyone who sees the phrase may be able to spend the funds.
3. Record and verify the recovery information
Write the words or backup data exactly as displayed, in the correct order, and follow the wallet’s instructions for any additional passphrase or backup file. Check the spelling and sequence before funding the wallet. If the wallet supports a recovery check, perform it before depositing a significant amount.

4. Create multiple secure physical copies
Bitcoin.org recommends secure backups in more than one physical location. Keep copies protected from casual access, fire, water, and other hazards appropriate to your circumstances. Do not place every copy in the same drawer, safe, or building. A second location helps with physical loss, but it also creates another place that must be secured.

5. Keep software current
Install wallet and device updates through the documented channel and confirm that the wallet remains compatible with your backup method. Bitcoin.org specifically advises keeping wallet software up to date. Do not install an update or recovery tool from a link sent in an unsolicited message.
6. Make a small test transaction
Send a small amount to the new receiving address. Confirm the address on the signing device’s own display when possible, then verify the transaction status. Next, send a small amount out, checking the destination and network details before approving. This lets you learn the workflow while the financial consequences are limited.
7. Document the recovery procedure
Write down the wallet type, where the backups are stored, the update source, and the steps a trusted person would need to follow. Do not write the recovery phrase in the same document or disclose it to someone who does not need it. Revisit the instructions after major wallet changes, relocation, or a change in the people responsible for the plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Hardware wallets, cold storage, and multisignature are different tools
Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet is a device that can keep private keys offline and sign transactions without exposing those keys to an internet-connected computer. It reduces some online attack paths, but it does not protect a recovery phrase that is photographed, copied, or handed to an attacker. It also cannot correct an address you approve after failing to check the transaction details.
Cold storage
“Cold” describes keeping private keys offline, not a particular brand or product. A cold arrangement still needs a usable recovery plan, secure backups, current compatible software, and a way to verify transactions. Offline storage lowers exposure to online attacks; it does not eliminate physical theft, coercion, loss, or operator error.

Multisignature
Multisignature requires more than one independent approval before funds can be spent. In Bitcoin.org’s 3-of-5 example, three of five keys are needed. Distributing the keys can reduce dependence on one device or location, but losing too many keys, misdocumenting the wallet policy, or failing to coordinate signers can make spending impossible. Use it only with a written recovery design and participants who understand their responsibilities.
Common failure scenarios and what to do
The exchange account is locked or withdrawals are paused
Use the provider’s official status page and support channel, complete requested account-recovery steps, and avoid sending identity documents or passwords to people who contact you unexpectedly. A pause is a provider-access problem; a self-custody wallet outside the service is not subject to that particular account lock, though moving funds during an incident may be impossible if they remain on the exchange.
You lose a hardware wallet or phone
Do not panic or discard the backup. Obtain a compatible replacement wallet or software, verify its authenticity and update status, and restore using the recovery procedure documented by the original wallet. If you suspect the device or phrase was exposed, move funds to a newly generated wallet after confirming the new backup.
Your recovery phrase may have been exposed
Assume the phrase is compromised. Create and verify a new wallet on a clean, trusted setup, then transfer funds after checking every destination address. Do not attempt to “hide” an exposed phrase by adding an unrecorded word or relying on secrecy alone; follow the wallet’s documented recovery and passphrase rules.
You cannot find the only backup
Stop adding funds until you locate or recreate a valid backup. If the wallet is still accessible, follow its documented backup process and test restoration before relying on the new copy. If the device is inaccessible and no valid recovery information exists, there may be no recovery path.
A transaction was sent to the wrong address
Bitcoin transactions are generally not reversible by a wallet provider or exchange. Check addresses on the signing device before approval, send a small test first when appropriate, and treat confirmation screens as the final opportunity to catch an error.
Can you combine an exchange and self-custody?
Yes. A split arrangement can keep a trading amount on an exchange while longer-term holdings remain in a self-custodied wallet. The division should be deliberate: define which funds need immediate account access, which funds can remain offline, and how you will move money between the two without skipping address checks or backup procedures.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

This approach does not eliminate either category of risk. The exchange portion remains subject to provider security, solvency, and withdrawal policies; the self-custodied portion remains subject to your key-management and recovery responsibilities. Keep records that distinguish the two so an emergency decision does not rely on memory.
A decision checklist
- Do you need to trade frequently, or is the primary goal long-term holding?
- Are you comfortable depending on a particular provider’s security, solvency, and withdrawal rules?
- Can you protect a recovery phrase from both theft and accidental disclosure?
- Can you keep more than one secure backup in separate physical locations?
- Do you understand how your chosen wallet is restored and whether it needs recurring backups?
- Can you verify receiving and destination addresses before every transaction?
- Would a hardware wallet or multisignature design add useful protection, or introduce complexity you cannot reliably manage?
- Does a trusted person know how to locate your recovery instructions without receiving the secrets themselves?
If the answers favor provider-managed convenience and you accept counterparty dependence, an exchange account may fit your working balance. If they favor direct control and you can maintain the required safeguards, self-custody may fit your long-term holdings. Reassess whenever your trading frequency, technical ability, living arrangements, or backup plan changes.
