Yes. For U.S. federal income-tax purposes, paying for a coffee with Bitcoin is a digital-asset disposition, even if the coffee costs only a few dollars. If the Bitcoin was held as a capital asset, you generally calculate the U.S.-dollar value of what you received minus the adjusted basis of the Bitcoin spent, report the resulting gain or loss on Form 8949 and Schedule D, and answer “Yes” to the digital-asset question on Form 1040.
There is no general personal-use or small-payment exception in the cited IRS guidance. A missing Form 1099-DA also does not remove your reporting duty. The rules below are for U.S. federal taxes; state, local and non-U.S. treatment can differ.

Why a coffee payment counts as a taxable Bitcoin disposition
The IRS treats Bitcoin and other virtual currency as property, not as foreign currency, for federal tax purposes. IRS Notice 2014-21 states: “For federal tax purposes, virtual currency is treated as property. General tax principles applicable to property transactions apply to transactions using virtual currency.”

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen you use Bitcoin to obtain goods or services, you exchange property for something else. That exchange is a disposition of the Bitcoin units you spent. The IRS digital-asset questionnaire specifically includes paying for goods or services “of any dollar amount (example: a cup of coffee) with digital assets.” The IRS also describes disposal as an exchange for property, goods or services in any amount.

Accordingly, a $3 coffee and a $300 purchase are treated the same way for identifying the disposition. The size of the payment, whether the transaction produced a gain or loss, and whether a broker sends an information return do not decide whether the transaction occurred.
How to calculate the gain or loss
For Bitcoin held as a capital asset, the basic calculation is:
Gain or loss = amount realized − adjusted basis
The amount realized is generally the U.S.-dollar fair market value of the coffee and any related consideration at the time of payment. Adjusted basis is what the Bitcoin units you spent cost you, adjusted as required by tax rules. You need to match the payment to the specific units or lot information used under the basis method you apply and document that method consistently.
What to record at the moment of payment
- Date and time of the Bitcoin payment.
- Quantity of Bitcoin transferred.
- U.S.-dollar fair market value of the coffee at that time, including the source and pricing timestamp used.
- Acquisition date and adjusted cost basis of the units spent.
- Transaction, network or processor fees, recorded separately so they can be handled under the applicable form instructions.
- Merchant receipt, wallet confirmation and transaction ID.
Do not substitute the Bitcoin’s current balance or the amount originally deposited into an exchange for the basis of the units spent. The relevant basis is tied to the units disposed of in the coffee transaction.
Worked examples
| Situation | U.S.-dollar value of coffee | Basis of Bitcoin spent | Result to report |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bitcoin increased in value | $5 | $2 | $3 capital gain |
| Bitcoin decreased in value | $5 | $8 | $3 capital loss |
| Value is approximately unchanged | $5 | $5 | Approximately zero gain or loss, still a documented disposition |
The examples show why the coffee’s price is not automatically your taxable income. The taxable result comes from the change in value of the Bitcoin between acquisition and spending. Holding period affects whether a capital disposition is short-term or long-term, so retain the acquisition date for every lot used.

How to report Bitcoin coffee payments on your federal return
1. Answer the Form 1040 digital-asset question
Answer “Yes” when you disposed of a digital asset during the tax year through a payment, sale, exchange or other transfer. Spending Bitcoin at a café is a payment for goods or services and falls within that description. The question is about whether a disposition occurred; it is not limited to transactions that generated a profit or produced a Form 1099-DA.
2. Enter capital-asset dispositions on Form 8949
Use Form 8949 for each capital-asset disposition, or for the grouped transaction detail permitted by the form instructions and your filing software. The form is where you report the relevant dates, proceeds, basis, holding period category and resulting gain or loss. Your coffee payment is represented by the U.S.-dollar amount realized and the basis of the Bitcoin units used, not by a deduction for the coffee itself.

Grouping is acceptable only when it follows the current Form 8949 instructions and preserves the required transaction detail. Keep the underlying wallet and exchange records even if your return displays an aggregate line.
3. Summarize the result on Schedule D
Schedule D summarizes the capital gains and deductible capital losses reported from Form 8949. A coffee payment that creates a loss is still listed as a disposition. Whether that loss can offset other income depends on the applicable capital-loss rules and your overall return; do not omit the transaction simply because no tax is due on that individual purchase.
4. Use the appropriate treatment for business or compensation situations
Not every Bitcoin holding is a personal capital asset. Digital assets received as compensation can create ordinary income when received, and digital assets held for sale to customers can involve ordinary-income or Schedule C reporting described in the Form 1040 instructions. If you later spend those assets on coffee, separate the income event from the later disposition analysis. The capital-asset workflow above should not be applied automatically to inventory or business receipts.

A transaction-level recordkeeping system that works
The IRS says taxpayers must maintain records documenting receipts, sales, exchanges and other dispositions of virtual currency, along with the fair market value of the virtual currency. Keep records long enough to support the positions on the relevant returns and to explain how each basis figure was determined.
Minimum record for each payment
- Merchant name and receipt number, if available.
- Wallet or exchange account used.
- Blockchain transaction ID and confirmation details.
- Exact Bitcoin quantity sent and the date and time shown by the wallet or processor.
- U.S.-dollar value used for the payment and the pricing source.
- Acquisition date, original cost and adjusted basis of the units disposed of.
- Any fee charged in dollars or Bitcoin, with a separate entry and description.
- The Form 8949 line, export file or ledger row that ties the transaction to your tax return.
Save exchange statements and wallet exports in their original formats as well as a readable spreadsheet. A spreadsheet should include a unique transaction ID so a payment can be traced from the merchant receipt to the wallet record, basis calculation and filed form.
When basis is missing
Do not estimate basis from memory or use a default value merely to complete a form. Gather purchase confirmations, transfers from other wallets, exchange histories and prior returns. If you cannot establish which units were spent or how much they cost, the uncertainty can materially change the gain or loss and is a reason to obtain professional advice before filing.
Why a Form 1099-DA does not decide whether you report
Broker information-reporting thresholds determine what a broker must place on Form 1099-DA. They are not a taxpayer safe harbor. IRS 2026 guidance says taxpayers must report related digital-asset income, gains or losses whether or not they receive Form 1099-DA.
Small coffee payments may not appear on a broker statement, especially when a payment processor or self-custody wallet is involved. Even when a 1099-DA arrives, it may not contain your complete wallet history or the correct basis for assets moved between platforms. Reconcile the form to your own transaction-level records and correct incomplete or inaccurate information rather than treating the statement as the entire tax file.

What happens when the Bitcoin was spent at a loss?
A loss means the Bitcoin’s adjusted basis exceeded the U.S.-dollar value of the coffee and related consideration at disposal. You generally do not have a gain from that transaction, but the disposition remains reportable on Form 8949 and Schedule D. The loss may be usable under the capital-loss rules after considering your other gains, losses and filing circumstances.
Do not skip a loss because the payment was only a few dollars. Omitting it can leave your Form 1040 digital-asset answer inconsistent with the transaction history and can make later basis reconciliation harder. Keep the same evidence for a loss as for a gain: value, quantity, dates, basis and receipt.

Several coffees paid from one wallet
Each payment is a separate disposal event. Maintain separate rows even if the payments occurred on the same day, because the Bitcoin quantities, timestamps and basis lots may differ.
Bitcoin moved between your own wallets first
A transfer between wallets you own is not the same event as spending Bitcoin on goods or services. Preserve the transfer records so you can show where the units came from and then identify the later payment that disposed of them.

Best Value
Fees paid in Bitcoin
Record fees separately from the coffee price. A fee paid by transferring additional Bitcoin can create its own disposal analysis, so document the quantity, value and basis rather than folding it invisibly into the merchandise amount.
Business-funded or employer-provided Bitcoin
If the Bitcoin came from compensation, business activity or inventory, determine the income and accounting treatment at receipt before analyzing the later payment. Personal Form 8949 treatment may not cover the entire sequence.
Choosing a workflow for frequent payments
The right process depends on transaction volume and how fragmented your records are. The IRS establishes the documentation and filing requirements, not a particular product or vendor.
| Workflow | Best fit | Required controls | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual ledger | Occasional payments from one wallet or exchange | Capture every payment, basis lot, valuation source, fee and transaction ID | High risk of omissions or spreadsheet errors as volume grows |
| Transaction-import software | Multiple wallets, exchanges or payment processors | Review imported matches, verify basis, preserve original exports and check Form 8949 output | Imports can mislabel transfers or lack historical basis |
| Tax professional review | Missing basis, business activity, many transactions or several jurisdictions | Provide complete wallet history, receipts, prior returns and explanations of unusual transfers | Requires organized records and professional fees |
Whichever method you choose, test a few transactions from start to finish: merchant receipt, wallet record, basis assignment, Form 8949 entry and Schedule D summary. Fix the process before applying it to hundreds of payments.
Pitfalls that cause avoidable errors
- Assuming a small amount is exempt: The IRS example expressly includes a cup of coffee and says any dollar amount counts.
- Waiting for a 1099-DA: Your filing obligation exists whether or not a broker issues the form.
- Reporting only profitable payments: Losses and near-zero results are still dispositions that belong in your records and, when applicable, on Form 8949.
- Using the wallet balance as basis: Basis belongs to the units spent, with their own acquisition dates and costs.
- Losing valuation evidence: Keep the exchange rate, timestamp and source used to convert the coffee price to U.S. dollars.
- Mixing personal and business Bitcoin: Separate compensation, inventory and capital-asset activity before preparing the return.
- Ignoring jurisdictional differences: Federal treatment does not establish state, local or non-U.S. treatment.
Federal scope and when to get help
The rules described here address U.S. federal income tax. State and local governments may use different conformity rules, and taxpayers outside the United States need advice for their own jurisdictions.
Consider consulting a qualified tax professional when you have missing acquisition records, substantial wallet activity, business or compensation transactions, assets inherited or gifted, or more than one state of residence. Give the professional the complete transaction export and your valuation and basis documentation; a single 1099-DA is not a substitute for that history.
For a straightforward personal payment, the essential sequence is consistent: identify the Bitcoin units spent, establish their U.S.-dollar value and adjusted basis, report the capital disposition on Form 8949 and Schedule D when applicable, answer the Form 1040 digital-asset question truthfully, and retain records that support every number.
