Exchange price and volume show what traders are doing now, while on-chain metrics calculate patterns from Bitcoin’s transaction history and unspent outputs. They answer different questions, so a reading that looks attractive on one chart can coexist with caution on another.
Metrics such as MVRV, MVRV Z-Score, SOPR and NUPL can describe valuation, holder profitability and spending behavior. Their historical zones are context from past samples—not guarantees that the next similar reading will mark a bottom, a top or a profitable entry.

The direct answer
A Bitcoin “buying signal” is usually one of two things: a market measure derived from exchange activity, or an on-chain measure derived from the public ledger. Price and volume belong to the first category. MVRV, MVRV Z-Score, SOPR and NUPL belong to the second.
Trading data records the price at which orders are being matched and the amount traded on an exchange or group of exchanges. On-chain data follows movements of coins between addresses and analyzes the value assigned to those movements. Because the datasets observe different activity, they can disagree without either being broken.

The useful conclusion is narrower than “the indicator says buy.” A metric can show that the market-value-to-realized-value relationship is historically low, that recently spent outputs are realizing losses, or that aggregate holders have large unrealized gains. It cannot by itself identify an owner’s motive, establish that coins moved to an exchange to be sold, or guarantee what price does next. The BIT Knowledge Hub’s overview of on-chain metrics makes this market-data/ledger-data distinction explicit.
Trading data and ledger data answer different questions
Price and volume: the exchange-market view
Price is the latest level at which buyers and sellers transact. Volume measures how much trading occurred over a selected interval. Together they describe exchange-market activity: momentum, volatility, liquidity conditions and the level at which participants are currently willing to trade.
These measures do not directly reveal the age of coins, the prices at which individual holders acquired them, or the distribution of unrealized gains and losses across the ledger. A price chart can therefore move sharply while the underlying holder-cost distribution changes only gradually, or remain stable while a large amount of on-chain activity occurs.

Bitcoin’s public ledger records transactions and the unspent transaction outputs (UTXOs) they create and consume. On-chain metrics transform that history into measures of value, profitability or behavior. They observe movements that are visible on the network, not private intentions.
A transfer can be an internal reshuffle, custody change, payment, collateral movement or another action. A movement alone does not prove that coins were sent to an exchange for sale. Any interpretation that assigns motive needs evidence beyond the ledger movement itself.
On-chain figures also depend on construction choices: which entities are grouped together, how change outputs are treated, which age cutoff defines a cohort, and what time window is used. Two dashboards can display different values while both are applying their own stated methodology correctly.

How the major indicators are built
MVRV: market value compared with realized value
Market-value-to-realized-value (MVRV) compares Bitcoin’s current market value with its realized value. Realized value assigns each coin a price based on the last time that coin moved on-chain, then aggregates those values. The ratio therefore compares the current market valuation with a ledger-based estimate of the value recorded at coins’ most recent movements.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Realized value is not a perfect record of every owner’s purchase price. Coins can change owners off-chain, custodians can hold coins for many customers, and a last movement may represent an internal transfer rather than an open-market purchase. MVRV is best read as a broad cost-basis relationship, not as a precise statement about what every holder paid.
MVRV Z-Score: historical standardization
MVRV Z-Score standardizes the market-value/realized-value relationship against its historical variation. Standardization helps a reader judge whether the current spread is unusual relative to the series used by that model, rather than looking only at an absolute ratio.
The threshold is inseparable from the model and sample that produced it. The Fidelity Digital Assets Q4 2024 Signals Report includes MVRV Z-Score among the indicators it tracks and discusses historical zones. Those zones describe past observations in that construction; they are not universal buy or sell levels for every provider, time period or market regime.
SOPR: profit or loss when outputs are spent
Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR) summarizes whether coins spent during a chosen window are, in aggregate, being spent above or below the value associated with their prior movement. A reading associated with profit means the spent outputs’ current realized value is higher than their earlier movement value; a loss reading means it is lower.

SOPR is about coins that moved during the selected period, not every coin in existence. Its interpretation changes with the window and with filtering rules. Glassnode’s 2020 analysis, “Breaking up On-Chain Metrics for Short and Long Term Investors,” demonstrates why short-term-holder and long-term-holder versions can reveal different behavior. A cohort-specific SOPR should not be silently treated as an all-holder measure.

NUPL: aggregate unrealized profit or loss
Net Unrealized Profit/Loss (NUPL) summarizes the aggregate unrealized gain or loss implied by current market value relative to the value assigned to coins’ prior movements. It describes paper gains and losses that have not necessarily been realized through spending.
NUPL can be useful in cycle analysis because it expresses the broad profitability state of holders. It does not state when those gains will be sold, whether holders can or will act on them, or how long a profitability regime will persist. A rule built from NUPL remains a historical model to test, not a timing guarantee.
Price and volume as a separate evidence category
Price and volume are not on-chain metrics. They are direct observations of exchange trading. Keeping them separate prevents a common category error: treating a rise in exchange volume as proof that long-held coins are being distributed, or treating a ledger transfer as proof of an imminent exchange sale.
Signal comparison at a glance
| Signal | Source data | What it measures | Time horizon or cohort | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Price | Exchange-market transactions | Current trading level | Any chart interval selected | Raw market observation; does not reveal ledger cost basis |
| Volume | Exchange-market transactions | Amount traded during an interval | Selected interval and venue set | Raw activity measure; venue coverage and methodology matter |
| MVRV | Bitcoin ledger plus market value | Market value relative to realized value | Aggregate network, unless a provider applies a cohort filter | Cost-basis relationship; not every owner’s purchase price |
| MVRV Z-Score | Derived from MVRV history | Standardized market-value/realized-value spread | Historical sample used for standardization | Model-specific historical context; thresholds are not universal |
| SOPR | Ledger outputs that were spent | Aggregate profit or loss at spending | Chosen window; short- and long-term cohorts may be separated | Spending behavior of moving outputs, not all holders |
| NUPL | Ledger-derived realized values plus market value | Aggregate unrealized profit or loss | Aggregate network or provider-defined cohort | Profitability state; does not predict when gains will be realized |
How to combine signals without turning them into commands
A disciplined reading process treats each indicator as one piece of evidence and records the assumptions behind it.
- Define the decision and horizon. A question about a multi-year allocation is different from a question about a purchase this week. A long-term cohort metric and a short trading chart should not be judged by the same standard.
- Label the data source. Mark each observation as exchange-market data or ledger-derived data. If a chart mixes them, identify which series is raw and which is calculated.
- Write the exact definition. Record whether the metric is aggregate or cohort-specific, the time window, the age cutoff and the provider’s treatment of entities and change outputs. Without this, a threshold cannot be reproduced.
- Separate the measurement from the interpretation. “MVRV is low relative to this historical sample” is a measurement-based statement. “Therefore the bottom is in” is a forecast that requires a separate, testable model.
- Look for corroboration, not confirmation theater. Agreement among price structure, a valuation relationship and spending behavior can provide richer context than one series alone. It still does not prove a future move.
- Investigate disagreement. Divergence may reflect different horizons, cohorts, exchange coverage or construction rules. Resolve those differences before deciding that one indicator is sending a stronger signal.
- State what would invalidate the interpretation. A change in provider methodology, a new market regime or a cohort definition that no longer matches the original study can make a historical threshold less comparable.
What historical zones can and cannot establish
Historical charts often highlight zones where a metric previously coincided with major market phases. Such zones are descriptions of a past sample. They show association, not a mechanism that forces the same outcome next time.
MVRV Z-Score illustrates the issue. Standardization can make an unusually wide or narrow spread easier to see, but the result depends on the historical window, the treatment of outliers and the underlying market-value and realized-value series. A zone identified in one report should be cited with that report’s methodology and date, not promoted to a timeless rule.

The same caution applies to SOPR bands and NUPL cycle rules. A rule may have worked in a set of historical episodes because of the market structure in those episodes. It may weaken, shift or fail when liquidity, custody practices, participant mix or transaction behavior changes.
Why indicators can disagree
- Different clocks: Price can react within minutes, while a long-term-holder metric changes only as older coins move or as the market value changes.
- Different populations: Aggregate MVRV, short-term-holder SOPR and long-term-holder SOPR describe different subsets of coins. Their readings are not interchangeable.
- Different events: Price and volume record trading; SOPR records spending of outputs; MVRV and NUPL summarize valuation relationships. A market can rally while holders continue realizing losses, or holders can show gains while exchange volume remains subdued.
- Different data treatment: Entity clustering, excluded addresses, change-output heuristics and exchange coverage can alter the calculated series.
- Different transformations: A raw ratio and a standardized score answer different questions. A threshold on one cannot be copied to the other.
Disagreement is therefore a prompt to inspect assumptions, not automatic evidence that one metric is wrong.

Confirm the provider’s definition
Read the documentation attached to the exact chart. Check whether “realized value” uses the last movement of every identified coin, how entities are grouped, and whether a provider excludes known categories of addresses. For SOPR, verify the spending window and whether the chart is all-holder, short-term-holder or long-term-holder.
Check the historical sample
Ask which dates were used to define a zone or standardize a score. A threshold calibrated on one era may not transfer unchanged to another. If a report presents a historical band, cite the report and preserve its qualification rather than presenting the band as a law of the market.
Check revisions and comparability
On-chain analytics providers can revise labels, entity clusters or historical data. Record the access date and version where available. Comparing a revised series with an old screenshot can create a false signal.

A ledger metric does not include private trading, derivatives positioning or an owner’s reason for moving coins unless those facts are independently established. Exchange volume also depends on which venues are included. A clean-looking chart can still be incomplete.
Best Value
Common mistakes when reading Bitcoin buying signals
- Calling a low MVRV a guaranteed bargain. It indicates a relationship between market value and realized value, not a promise that price cannot fall further.
- Treating a cohort metric as universal. Short-term-holder SOPR says something about a defined age group, not automatically about long-term holders or the entire network.
- Inferring intent from a transfer. On-chain movement is observable; the owner’s motive is not.
- Copying a threshold between providers. Different definitions and samples can produce different levels and zones.
- Using an academic rule as a trading guarantee. Testing whether a rule described historical cycles is not the same as proving reliable future performance.
- Mixing time horizons. A long-term valuation measure should not be used as a precise entry trigger for a short-term trade without additional evidence.
- Assuming “more signals” means certainty. Several indicators can share the same underlying market-value input, so apparent agreement may not be independent confirmation.
- Ignoring the absence of a live reading. A definition or historical chart cannot establish whether Bitcoin is currently bullish, bearish, cheap or expensive without an authoritative, time-stamped observation.
What academic cycle studies do—and do not—show
Academic work has examined whether on-chain variables, including NUPL, can be incorporated into rules for identifying Bitcoin cycles. The 2026 University of Vaasa repository paper “Using on-chain data to predict Bitcoin cycles” is evidence that this is an empirical research question.
That distinction matters. A study can define a rule, test it on historical data and report an association without establishing that the rule will keep working in unseen conditions. Readers should look for the sample period, out-of-sample testing, transaction-cost assumptions, sensitivity to parameter choices and the possibility of overfitting before treating a published rule as actionable.
No single academic result removes the practical limitations of the underlying data: ledger movements do not expose motives, cohort definitions can vary, and market regimes change.
A practical, non-predictive checklist
| Question | Evidence to gather | What you can reasonably conclude | What you cannot conclude from it alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| What is the market doing now? | Exchange price and volume, with venue coverage and interval stated | Describe current trading activity | Identify the cost basis or intent of holders |
| How does valuation compare with ledger history? | MVRV and, if used, a clearly defined MVRV Z-Score | Describe the market-value/realized-value relationship and its historical unusualness | Guarantee a bottom, top or profitable entry |
| Are spent coins realizing gains or losses? | SOPR with its window and cohort definition | Describe profitability of outputs that moved during that window | Describe every holder’s profitability or predict the next price move |
| What is the aggregate unrealized state? | NUPL with the provider’s construction and date | Describe broad unrealized gains or losses | Know when holders will sell or how long the state will last |
| Do several measures agree? | Aligned timestamps, horizons and methodologies | Use agreement as corroborating context | Treat correlation as proof of future performance |
How to use these signals responsibly
Start with a written hypothesis, such as “valuation appears low relative to this provider’s historical sample,” rather than “the signal says buy.” Record the timestamp, source, cohort and threshold. Then identify evidence that could contradict the hypothesis, including a different cohort reading, a change in methodology or a market move that invalidates the assumed horizon.
Keep the decision separate from the chart. A purchase also involves position size, liquidity needs, time horizon and tolerance for loss—variables that MVRV, SOPR and NUPL do not measure. If those constraints are undefined, no indicator can supply the missing decision rule.
Finally, avoid presenting a historical association as a current call. The available source material defines the metrics and discusses historical framing; it does not provide an authoritative live reading at a timestamp that would justify labeling Bitcoin bullish, bearish, cheap or expensive now.

Bottom line
Trading price and volume show exchange activity; MVRV, MVRV Z-Score, SOPR and NUPL show different relationships and behaviors derived from Bitcoin’s ledger. Read each with its construction, horizon, cohort and historical sample attached. Use agreement as context and disagreement as a reason to investigate assumptions. None is a self-sufficient instruction to buy, and none can guarantee the next Bitcoin move.
