Bitcoin and ether (the native asset of Ethereum) are speculative, highly volatile assets. You can lose money through a falling market, an exchange or wallet failure, a scam, a stolen recovery phrase, or a technical error. A hardware wallet can reduce exposure to online attacks, but it cannot make transactions reversible or protect a seed phrase that you disclose. Bitcoin and Ethereum also have different network functions and technical risks, while their legal treatment in the United States depends on the asset, transaction and jurisdiction.

How volatile are Bitcoin and Ethereum?

Prices for both assets can move sharply in either direction. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes crypto assets as investments whose prices may fluctuate widely. A Financial Stability Oversight Council report measured approximately 37% 30-day annualized Bitcoin volatility as of November 1, 2024. That is a dated market observation, not a forecast or a permanent Bitcoin characteristic.

No same-date Ethereum volatility percentage is established here, so it would be misleading to present one. Ether often reacts to broad crypto-market moves, but its price is also affected by Ethereum network use, application activity, software changes and staking expectations. Bitcoin and ether should therefore be treated as separate risk exposures rather than interchangeable versions of the same asset.

What spot exchange-traded products do—and do not—change

Spot exchange-traded products (ETPs) can provide market exposure without requiring you to operate a blockchain wallet. They do not remove the underlying asset’s price risk. If Bitcoin or ether falls, an ETP linked to it can also fall; fees, tracking differences, trading hours and product structure create additional risks.

Question Bitcoin Ether and Ethereum
Primary network role Peer-to-peer monetary network for recording and transferring bitcoin. Ethereum is a programmable blockchain; ether pays network fees and supports activity such as smart contracts and decentralized applications.
Volatility evidence in the cited material Approximately 37% 30-day annualized volatility on November 1, 2024, according to the Financial Stability Oversight Council. No comparable same-date percentage is established here.
Main market drivers Demand for bitcoin, macroeconomic conditions, liquidity, regulation, mining economics and market sentiment. Crypto-market conditions plus demand for Ethereum block space, application use, staking and software or protocol developments.
Transaction-cost behavior Fees rise when demand for block space exceeds available capacity; confirmation time can vary. Gas fees rise when demand for Ethereum block space rises. A transaction can fail while still consuming gas.
Additional technical exposure Private-key loss, exchange compromise, phishing, fee-market changes and mining-related changes that affect timing or cost. Smart-contract bugs, bridge failures, client defects, validator outages and sending funds on the wrong network, in addition to private-key and phishing risks.
Regulatory question Classification depends on the product, transaction and jurisdiction. The same fact-specific approach applies; do not assume that a label for one asset automatically applies to the other.

Is a hardware wallet safer than leaving crypto on an exchange?

“Safer” depends on which failure you are trying to avoid. An exchange account is a custodial arrangement: the platform controls the blockchain keys while you access a claim or account balance. A hot wallet keeps keys in software connected to an internet-connected device. A hardware wallet stores key operations in a dedicated physical device intended to keep private keys away from ordinary online malware. None is risk-free.

Custodial exchange account

  • Advantages: convenient trading, password-based account recovery in some cases, and no need to maintain a seed phrase yourself.
  • Risks: platform insolvency, frozen withdrawals, weak security controls, account takeover, phishing and lack of legal or practical recourse after theft. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that “There is no assurance of recourse if your virtual currency is stolen.”

Hot wallet

  • Advantages: direct control of keys and quick access for ordinary transactions.
  • Risks: malware, malicious browser extensions, fake wallet applications, clipboard substitution, SIM or email account takeover, and signing a deceptive transaction.

Hardware or cold-storage wallet

  • Advantages: private-key operations are designed to remain isolated from the computer or phone, reducing the attack surface for remote malware.
  • Risks: a stolen or damaged device, counterfeit or tampered hardware, a compromised setup process, malicious firmware, an exposed recovery phrase, an incorrect address on the screen, and irreversible user error.

A hardware device is best understood as a way to control key exposure, not as an insurance policy. You still have to verify the receiving address and network, update software through the maker’s documented process, protect the recovery material and test a small transaction before moving a large balance.

How to set up and use a hardware wallet more safely

  1. Buy through a trustworthy channel and inspect packaging. Do not use a device whose seals, accessories or setup instructions appear altered. No regulator cited here endorses a particular manufacturer.
  2. Initialize it yourself. Generate the recovery words on the device or its official setup flow. Never accept a prewritten phrase, a phrase sent by email or a phrase displayed on a website.
  3. Record the recovery phrase offline. Write it accurately and store it where fire, water, theft and unauthorized visitors are unlikely to destroy or reveal it. Do not photograph it, upload it to cloud storage or paste it into a chat.
  4. Use a strong device PIN and account security. Protect the computer or phone used with the wallet, enable multi-factor authentication on exchange and email accounts, and keep recovery codes offline.
  5. Verify software and addresses. Download wallet software only from the manufacturer’s documented source. Compare the full destination address and network on the wallet’s trusted display, not just the first and last characters on your computer.
  6. Test with a small amount. Send a small transaction, wait for the expected confirmation and verify receipt before transferring a larger balance.
  7. Plan inheritance and recovery. A trusted person should know that a recovery plan exists without receiving the secret phrase in an ordinary message. Test that your instructions are understandable while keeping the key material confidential.

Can Bitcoin or Ethereum be hacked?

The question combines several different targets. A blockchain protocol, a wallet, an exchange, a smart contract and a user’s phone can fail in different ways.

Attacking the base networks

Bitcoin and Ethereum use distributed consensus rather than a single database. That design makes a simple central break-in unlikely, but it does not make the systems invulnerable to every attack. Consensus manipulation, software defects, infrastructure outages and severe network congestion are possible technical categories. The available evidence does not establish a current successful attack on either base network, so claims that one can never be disrupted are too broad.

Stealing keys or taking over accounts

Most individual losses result from compromised credentials, exposed private keys, malicious software, phishing or a dishonest intermediary rather than from rewriting the entire blockchain. A thief who obtains the signing key can create a valid transaction. Confirmed blockchain transfers are generally not reversible by a bank or customer-service agent.

Ethereum application risks

Ethereum adds an important layer: smart contracts and bridges. A coding bug, flawed permissions, oracle failure or bridge design problem can allow funds to be drained or become inaccessible. Client software defects and validator outages can also affect availability. These are plausible failure modes, not a quantified incident rate.

Bitcoin-specific operational risks

Bitcoin users must protect private keys, avoid phishing and account compromise, and account for fee-market changes that can delay or increase the cost of a transaction. Mining economics and software changes can influence the network without giving a user a way to reverse a mistaken payment.

What happens if you lose a wallet or seed phrase?

The device itself is usually replaceable; the recovery material is what controls access. If you lose a hardware wallet but still have the correct recovery phrase, you can generally restore the wallet on a compatible replacement device. If you lose the phrase and the device is destroyed, reset or inaccessible, there may be no recovery route. If someone else obtains the phrase, they can often move the funds without your permission.

If the device is lost but the phrase is safe

  1. Acquire a replacement from a trustworthy source.
  2. Restore using the exact recovery method and any additional passphrase you intentionally configured.
  3. Check balances and addresses before approving a transaction.
  4. After restoration, consider moving funds to a newly generated wallet if you suspect the old device was tampered with.

If the phrase may be exposed

Assume the wallet is compromised. Create a new wallet on a clean device, record its new recovery material offline and transfer assets immediately, checking each network and destination address. Do not enter the old phrase into a website that promises validation or recovery; that is a common theft pattern.

If a transaction was sent incorrectly

Contacting an exchange may help only when the recipient is a cooperative, identifiable custodian and the platform has a documented recovery process. A wrong address, wrong network or malicious smart-contract approval may be permanent. Keep transaction IDs, screenshots and phishing messages for incident reports, but do not pay a “recovery agent” who guarantees the return of funds.

How do crypto scams and Bitcoin ATM scams work?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says Bitcoin ATM scams commonly use government impersonation, business impersonation and tech-support impersonation. The scammer creates urgency, tells you that money or an account is in danger, instructs you to buy bitcoin and directs you to a machine. You are then asked to scan a QR code or send cash to an address controlled by the scammer.

FTC reports recorded more than $65 million in Bitcoin ATM scam losses during the first six months of 2024, with a $10,000 median reported loss. People over 60 were more than three times as likely as younger adults to report a loss. These figures describe reported complaints, not every loss.

Red flags that end the conversation

  • Someone claims to be a government agency and demands crypto to prevent arrest, protect funds or pay a fine.
  • A bank, employer, retailer or technical-support worker insists that you use a Bitcoin ATM or buy gift cards and crypto.
  • You are told to keep the transfer secret, stay on the phone or act immediately.
  • A stranger supplies a QR code or wallet address and says the transfer can be reversed later.
  • Someone promises guaranteed profits, asks for a “tax” or “unlock fee,” or offers to recover crypto for an upfront payment.

Legitimate agencies do not demand cryptocurrency transfers to protect your money, unlock an account or settle an unexpected penalty. If you have paid, stop communicating, contact the ATM operator and the payment provider immediately, preserve records and report the fraud to the FTC and relevant law-enforcement agency. Do not send additional money to anyone promising recovery.

Are Bitcoin and Ethereum securities or commodities?

There is no single worldwide answer, and a U.S. classification can depend on the asset, the transaction, the intermediary and the facts surrounding an offering. The SEC and CFTC issued joint interpretive guidance in March 2026, but that does not turn every Bitcoin or Ethereum transaction into one uniform legal category. Rules can differ for spot purchases, investment contracts, derivatives, exchange-traded products, staking arrangements and token offerings.

Before relying on a legal label, check current guidance for your jurisdiction and the exact product. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin dated September 9, 2024, notes: “Investors should know that the characteristics and design of crypto assets, and the distributed ledger or blockchain technology through which they are issued and/or transferred, can vary significantly.” Tax, registration, custody and consumer-protection consequences may follow from those differences.

A practical risk checklist before buying or transferring

  • Decide whether you can withstand a complete loss; volatility is not limited to ordinary stock-market swings.
  • Identify who controls the keys and what happens if that party freezes withdrawals or fails.
  • Use a hardware wallet or other custody method only after you understand seed-phrase recovery and irreversible transfers.
  • Verify the asset, network, destination address and fee before signing.
  • Keep operating-system, browser and wallet software current, and remove untrusted extensions.
  • Use unique passwords and multi-factor authentication for email, exchanges and related accounts.
  • Ignore unsolicited investment, recovery and technical-support messages.
  • Separate long-term holdings from funds needed for everyday transactions.
  • Keep records of purchases, transfers, fees and dates for security and tax reporting.

What the cybercrime data says about the broader risk

A 2025 CFTC filing citing FBI data reported $16.6 billion in cybercrime losses in 2024; 56% of that figure involved cryptocurrency, with $9.3 billion in crypto-related losses. The figures cover reported cybercrime broadly, not a probability that any particular Bitcoin or Ethereum holder will be victimized. They do show why custody, authentication and scam resistance deserve as much attention as price charts.
